    Prior to 2025 Abreu was worse vs LHPs, so I'm not sure we can say he's better going forward, but I think it's safe to say they are close. Both would not be platooned on many teams- maybe most.

    I get that, but signing Alonso makes a big tax hit, too, and he might as well be a DH, he's almost as bad as Casas at 1B D. Suarez will be cheaper and shorter but he may be best used as a DH or 1Bman. Who else is there? Polanco? A trade for K Marte?

    I'd add Lodolo and others to your list (despite no 30 GS) and might go down as low as Mitch Keller, who is more like a mid to a low #2 or high #3, if you use the top 30 grouped pitchers, but I think several can be obtained without giving up the world. I think we gave up a lot for Crochet, but it worked. Now, nobody was sure Crochet could lead the league in IP, so there was speculation on him, but we should be able to add a high #2 via trade.

    If BORA$$ can be trusted, I might be okay with the idea, but I still come down to this: If we will play what the Mets and Dodgers will pay, why not just wait and outbid them next winter. Trade the pieces needed to get Skubal for someone else, and in 2027, we have both Skubal and the guy we get this winter for the haul that would have been needed to get Skubal.

    A stroke of the pen on a Masa DFA or subsidized trade and that awkwardness vanishes instantly.

    He used to be a nice .375 to .390 OBP, but has declined sharply there. A big NOPE from me.

    The problem with this is that if JH whiffs on a big FA signing, nothing is lost. If we trade key pieces for Skubal and JH fails to meet his demands, we lose a lot for a one year window boost- grand as it is. I don't trust JH to do it. Why should we? We can all sit here and pontificate about why he can and should, but he just plain doesn't go large and long anymore. Okay, Devers and Crochet were, so maybe I'm wrong but the risk of him bumbling this is too scary for my liking.

    That's one reason I suggested Story at 3B and Mayer at SS, but arm strength is needed at SS, too. Would you prefer Story at 3B and Mayer at SS?

    That's a good assessment, and I often am critical when people make judgments based on small sample sizes, but I was really impressed with Early's approach, confidence and control of several pitches. It might have been an outlier, but I kinda like Early and Tolle about the same. I do think Tolle has more upside, but it's the "lower floor" that worries me. I'd like to keep both by trying to include 1-2 pitchers from this group instead, but GMs may balk at the offer: Crawford & Perales Dobbins & Fitts Harrison & Clarke (Mix and match) So many teams need 2-3 SP'ers that maybe offering quantities of promise could outweigh a solo, high upside pitching prospect. Duran plus any 2 of the 6 pitchers I listed should net us an excellent SP'er. I'm not sure Duran, Fitts plus 2 from these guys gets the same pitcher: Fajardo, Valera, Sandlin (maybe Witherspoon/Phillips added in this mix choice)

    I've mentioned Rafaela a few times, too. I do think Duran brings back more than Abreu, but some teams might want the cheaper option.

    I see it this way: I think we waste value by playing Duran or Anthony at DH. I'd be okay trading Rafaela or Abreu, but both are excellent defenders in very difficult Fenway positions. Anthony may outhit Duran in 2026 and is a better defender, so we likely lose no value in LF. Would Duran be a better DH than a Masa-Romy platooned DH? I'd say yes, but how large is that upgrade versus the upgrade we get at the #2SP'er slot by trading Duran? To me, it should not be close. Simply put, Duran is worth more to other teams as a LF'er than to us as a DH.

    I know that's why he's out, but for some reason I thought you were more worried about the prior injury coming back to haunt him. Sorry. In his current injury often a career ender? It's not like he relied on speed and agility in any part of his value skillsets. If we DH him, he may still hurt himself again running to 1B or just walking down the steps of the dugout, but I think it's more likely he finds a new injury that repeats this one, over and over. I'm no MD, but I've read people fully recover from this injury/surgery in 6-9 months.

    I agree. Adding a depth piece might work, but we have 7-8 guys to give a shot, already. We need a solid #2- or a borderline #1. I'd settle for a borderline 2-3, if we make major strides in adding power bats. (Plural) I still think a trade is most likely the way to fill that need, but maybe I'm biased by the Crochet, Porcello, Sale, Beckett, Schilling and Pedro trades. Thinks about it: we've made some bad trades for SP'ers, but most were minor ones. Even the Peavy and Nate trades worked out. What has been the worst major trade for a SP'er we have made in the last 2 decades?

    I think this report is the same as I read in September and early October.

    Since he turns 29, soon, it seems likely he's got 4-5 real good years followed by 2-4 more pretty good ones, unless some injury happens, or he greatly declines earlier than most pitchers do gradually around 31-34.

    If we got Alonso & K Marte with Mayer at 3B, I'd be fine with Story at SS. I've mentioned Story at 3B and Mayer at SS a few times, but I doubt Cora would do that. Cora probably thinks Story is the "best defensive SS in MLB," like he did with Kiki. Signing Alonso and Suarez would greatly hurt the defense, but it might eventually lead Cora to move Story to 2B with Mayer at SS. Either of these options would allow Romy to platoon at DH and be the back-up 1Bman, 2Bman and maybe 3Bman. DHam would be a nice back-up 2Bman, and Story or Mayer could move over to SS, if one gets hurt or has a day off. Casas would start in AAA and hopefully be the best 1B depth we've had in years. Counting Masa as an emergency corner OF'er, we have 6 OF'ers, so one or two could be traded to upgrade the rotation.

    I think some teams would prefer the younger, less expensive, longer controlled, higher ISO, better defender Abreu over Duran.

    Do you project Duran to be #4 in FWAR among 2026 OF'ers? Also, trading Duran for a pitcher or KMarte is not adding an OF"er. The idea is that Anthony will replace Duran not be a downgrade, but we upgrade 2B from a merry-go-round of circus clowns to one of the best, and one who has real power to boot! (He's about top 15 or 20 in ISO.) 2024-2025 fWAR KMart 15.3 Duran 13.2

    I've made numerous suggestions- almost all via a trade or two, but yes, if we trade for KMarte, who is left to trade for Ryan, Lodolo, Lopez, Keller and .... I've mentioned Merrill Kelly, but only because he will not get a long deal. I'm not thrilled about this FA picthing class, especially if it's large and long. I seriously doubt Brez & Co decide to do two major trades, and I'm not sure I'd want to do that, either, but if we get payers with several years of control, it won't be only about the hear and now. How about this? (BTV might approve) Duran, DHam & Sandlin for Lodolo and McClain Campbell, Early & Fitts for KMarte or Campbell & Early for Ryan Duran, Arias & Fitts for KMarte Then, use the budget to add Alonso and maybe Ref + Matz
