  1. There is a lot of value in thigs catchers do not captured by stats or metrics, but if you look closely, you can see how Wong got good results from the pitchers he caught. Crochet 1.74 w Wong (.597 OPSA in 31 IP) 2.74 w Narvaez (.620 in 174) Bello 3.07 w Narvaez (.790 in 29) 3.41 w Wong (.643 in 137) Giolito 2.29 w Wong (.614 in 20) 3.59 w Narvaez (..696 in 125) Buehler 4.95 w Wong (.715 in 20) 5.56 w Narvaez (.845 in 92) All of these sample sizes were very unbalanced, but Wong led in 7 of the 8 stats, among our top 4 IP starters. Whitlock: better w Narvaez in both stats Weissert: better w Wong in both Chapman: split stat leader Dobbins: split leader Bernardino: way better w Narvaez in both Wilson: better w Narvaez in both Fitts: better w Wong in both The second group is pretty even: 8 for Narvaez and 6 for Wong. (Those with 60+ IP, it was 4-4.) 8 pitchers w 60+ IP: Wong 11- Narvaez 5 leads. 11 pitchers with 45+ IP: Wong 13- Narvaez 9
  2. Please, no Sale. You just know what what will happen, if he comes back. Can we please... just once...add a pitcher without so many concerns? It's like the Sox have hypnotized us into only being able to see hobbled and broken-down pitchers as options.
  3. Sox avoid arb w Wong at $1.4M.
  4. Well, we added some 1B and C depth on the farm. Those were the two most empty slots on the farm.
  5. I think they felt Bernardino was in decline. They held off calling him up, one time, this season. I wondered if he was hurt. His BB rate rose steadily in his 3 years. I think they like these younger arms more. Murphy and Wink were no slouches, either. Apparently, SEA liked Hoppe a bunch. They gave a guy who was ranked 127th before his injury. I think this is a sign our depth is pretty good.
  6. Somehow the Braves got Morton to keep signing one year deals year after year.
  7. How about this? Mayer (BTV 56) + Eyanson (6) For K Marte (61) Rafaela (31)+ Zanetello (2) + Paez (3) For Lodolo (31) Sign Alonso, Suarez & Matz ______________________ 1. L Anthony CF 2. S KMarte 2B 3. R Suarez 3B 4. R Alonso 1B 5. L Abreu RF 6. R Duran LF 7. R Story SS 8. L Yoshida DH/R Romy 9. R Narvaez C SP: Crochet, Lodolo, Bello, Sandoval, Crawford/Dobbins/Harrison/Early/Tolle RP: Chapman, Whitlock, Slaten, Matz, Weissert, Hicks, Criswell, Moran
  8. Remember the Blaze Jordan for Matz deal, and how some felt Jordan was a very promising prospect? It's interesting that the "mighty" Cardinals did not protect him from Rule 5 selection. (He may get picked.)
  9. I'm fine avoiding large and long with pitchers. It's not just because of our nice success trading for top pitchers, but also because so many of them fail- often year 1 or 2. It makes sense to go large and long on a big bat, this year. We should have a 3-5 year window.
  10. The everyday 40 man roster: (18 on the current 40) C: Narvaez & Wong 1B: Casas, T Gray 2B: Romy, DHam, Grissom SS: Story, Sogard 3B: Mayer LF: Anthony, Duran, Campbell CF: Rafaela, Garcia RF: Abreu, Eaton DH: Yoshida Non 40 minor league depth: AAA: C- Delay & Rosario, 1B-Hickey, 2B- Ferguson, SS- McDonough, 3B Romero, OF- Castro, B Ward, Sikes AA-: Jo garcia, Brannon, Alcantara, Liendo, Arias, Bleis, YRod, T Miller A+: Salazar, R Hernandez, M White, Godbout, Nunez, Martin, N Taylor, J Gonzales, Cespedes A-: Heyman, Azocar, Fermin
  11. So, with all the shuffling made, recently, here is rough draft of the 40 man pitching depth chart. 21 Pitchers on the 40: SP: Crochet, Bello, Sandoval, Crawford, Harrison, Dobbins, Fitts, Early, Tolle, Perales, Uberstine, Drohan RP: Chapman, Whitlock, Slaten, Weissert, Criswell, Hicks, Moran, Kelly, Sandlin (converted SP'ers) Houck to 60 Day IL, after season begins. Some non 40 man roster pitchers projected by level: AAA: Jack Anderson, Hayden Mullins, Noah Song, Hobie Harris, O Berrios AA: Holobetz, Clarke, Paez, Rivera, Wehunt, Rogers/ Wu-Yelland, N Dean, Sena, Sansone, Adams, McShane, Ingrassia, Carlson A+: Fajardo, Valera, Witherspoon, Phillips, Eyanson, Aita/ Tyagart. Neely, Ehrlicher, Foutch, Futrell A-: Travieso, J Bello, Morgan, Patton, Finley, Brown/ Mayers, Ruiz, Gartrell
  12. If 2019-2020 winter is recent, okay. Before 2019, they extended Sale and Nate, planned on trading Betts and let Kimbrel & Kelly go without replacing in kind. One could argue the trend started then, but they did still spend a lot. Since those two extensions, in terms of adding players, it's been Story and Yoshida. That's a sharp decline.
  13. Part of the reason they remained a top budget team was the longer term deals signed under DD. The new spending dropped off sharply after the Sale and Nate extensions/re-signings. The cheap label was accurate in this sense.
  14. Yes! I wish we still had Devers. I'd be ranting about needing a SP2 and a decent bat at 3B, but not for a big bat badly. I'd prefer to not have Schwarber at 1B. I'd prefer we trade Masa rather than play him in LF, so Schwarber can DH.
  15. I never have an issue with high K rates, if the guy gets on base. This guy does that, and oh yea, he hits a few bombs, too. 2024-2025 .365 OBP (12th in MLB) .525 SLG (6th- just behind another target: K Marte) .890 OPS (7th) 7th in wRC+ as well .281 ISO (4th) He's also had 669 or more PAs for 4 straight years. I'm okay playing him at 1B for a big chunk of games, since Casas is the worst defensive 1Bman in MLB. We need a big bat badly. To me, I rank the big bats that are or might be available as such: 1. Schwarber 2. K Marte 3. Alosno 4. Suarez (higher ISO than Alonso & K Marte '24-25) Gap.... B Lowe, Polanco, Bregman Gap.... (some w/o much HR power) W Contreras, Bichette, Hoskins, O'Hearn, Y Diaz
  16. I get that. My point was that his name was never mentioned as a possible selection. Hence the "under the radar" comment.
  17. Nobody mentioned Hoppe being protected, but SEA felt he was worth trading for, since he'd be selected before they could nab him. You caught that blip on your radar screen?
  18. I'd do it. Our offense would improve. Our pitching would improve. Our defense would take a hit, but 2 to 1 sounds good to me. Plus, the Drewski factor counts offense 3 times, so it's 4 to 1. I may be alone on this, but I'd play Anthony in CF and keep Duran in LF with a big wall behind him to stop the ball from rolling. Garcia could play CF, when Duran, Abreu or Anthony need a break.
  19. I don't want Duran traded because I don't think he's very good. I want to trade him precisely because I think we need a really good SP2, 2Bman or 3Bman, and we need to give talent to get talent. We have 4 OF'ers. I went through my reasons why I feel Duran is the one that should be traded, but it's not based on him being the worst of the 4. Control years, age, defense, trends and current trade value are all factors. Of course, offense, speed and other factors support keeping him, and I acknowledge that, often. It's not a clear cut choice to make, and if some team offers the same or more for Rafaela or Abreu, I would reassess my position. I don't think they would. Now, some teams might want Abreu or Rafaela, because of the cost or years of control, as compared to Duran, and teams that want Duran are likely in "win now" mode, so it's not always going to look like a perfect trade match. I've mentioned a 3 team trade as a work-around on that aspect. I'm not sure it can be worked out. I will say, I am 99.9% certain we trade an OF'er. (90% it's Duran, Abreu or Rafaela.) 45% Duran 33% Abreu 15% Rafaela 7% Campbell or Garcia
  20. I believe you. I will say, Brez has a better trade record than Bloom, which is not hard to do. Sure, there is the Sale and Priester trades, but there have been more good ones... Crochet Narvaez Slaten Fitts, Weissert + O'Neill Priester (for Nick Yorke) Pending: Fajardo, Dandlin, Holobetz/YRod Anyway, if these guys suck at trades, then they'll blow an Abreu trade, instead.
  21. Okay. Maybe it was someone else who said I have no idea what value Duran would bring back in a trade. Maybe that guy doesn't know that "centerpiece" means one of several players with him being the best of all, but might not be great or even real good.
  22. Wow, the rankings put ND above ALA, but that can change. 1. Ohio St 10-0 (v Rutgers/ at MI) 2, Indiana 11-0 (at PUR) 3. TX A&M 10-0 (v Samford/ at TEX) 4. Georgia 9-1 (v Charlotte/ at GA Tech) 5. TX Tech 10-1 (at W VA) 6. Ole Miss 10-1 (at Miss St) 7. Oregon 9-1 (v USC/ at WSH)) 8. Oklahoma 8-2 (v Missouri/ v LSU) 9. 23. Maybe someone else said he's not good enough to even be the "centerpiece in a trade?"
