  1. They certainly weigh players with options vs players without options when making decisions like this in January. That is about 26 man roster flexibility, and it matters. One can wonder why Brasier with no options was kept over Barnes with no options, but keeping Ort, Mills and players with options might be the only reason they are still here. Options are about the 26 and 40.
  2. SS defense is very important. While improving our defense there will not come close to offsetting the loss on offense without Bogey, it can be one part of the whole picture of improvements that offset the losses and then some. No doubt, we had a ton of ifs to start with. Adding a star from Japan and aging or oft-injured promising players at other slots only added to the list of questions. I will say, not all questions get answered in the negative, and we don't need even 75-80% answered positively to be a better team. We just need the non-questionable players to play to their norms and maybe just a clear majority of the bigger questions to come out well. 3 out of 4 would be nice: Yoshida Sale Kike Casas 3 out of 5 might be needed: Whitlock Houck Paxton McGuire Duvall Maybe 3-4 out of 7: Arroyo/Mondesi/EValdez (Mayer/Story?) Turner Wong/Alfaro Dugo Tapia/Rafaela Jansen/Martin/Schreiber Rodriguez/Mills/Brasier/Crawford/Wink/Kelly/German/Ort/Mata/Walter/Murphy
  3. We should see better to much better OBPs at 1B (.302 in 2022), 3B (.349), LF (.307), CF (.300), RF (.295)and maybe C (.313), 2B (.313) & DH (.331). Yes, big step down on SS offense, but there are 8 other batting slots and 9 slots to try and improve on D. SS D should be better. 1B D will be better. The rest is up in the air.
  4. So all the talk of him being the "7th inning" guy was just bluster to amp up his trade value?
  5. The 26 is certainly a consideration in January.
  6. No MLB team would take Barnes on their 26 man roster at min wage? I find that very hard to fathom, un less he's hurt and won't pass any physical. Ort has options. Mills has options. This makes no sense, unless he's pretty much traded, already or hurt or about to be charged with a crime.
  7. What does that accomplish? He rejects the minors and we pay him to play elsewhere.
  8. What's the chance we do something like this... trade Barnes and $5M for a non 40 man prospect. We'd clear some space on the budget, improve the farm and open the roster slot for Duvall. Best part: we get to keep Brasier and Ort!!!!
  9. That's what you said when we added Schreiber, Refsnyder and Kelly.
  10. Because Mondesi is unreliable?
  11. Why? Swap a 40 man for a 40 man, and call it even. Yes, it seems weird they don't just do the trade without waivers, but maybe the Duvall addition to the 40 couldn't wait.
  12. Maybe they just wanted to add Duvall, now and have a detail or two to work out on a deal. I just can't believe they will pay someone else to have Barnes pitch for them and get nothing back, unless they just found out about a health concern or personal issue. Cora just spoke ab out him being the 7th inning guy.
  13. How about Barnes and Koss for DeJong?
  14. Teams have multiple set-up men- usually 2-3 8th and 9th innings guys after the closer.
  15. That number includes his having a value of $7.7M while being owed $15.5M, making a net of -$7.8M. Why would we pay someone $15.5M, so they get $7.7M value from him, and we keep Ort on the roster? He's going to be traded.
  16. Exactly. Why can't that be a possibility? Some team might take him in exchange for a $4-5M player, too. Some GM might actually want him at close to face value. I seriously doubt we just eat his contract, unless we just found out something new about his health.
  17. Two less choices in the pen, and Brasier and Ort live another day.
  18. Players are often DFA'd right before a trade is announced.
  19. Matt Barnes DFA'd to make room for Duvall!!! I'm shocked. I'm thinking a trade must be in the works. He's got to have better hopes than Brasier, Ort and a few others on the 40. Crazy times!
  20. I'm very concerned about the injury prone aspect of Mondesi, but the more I think about him and look over his numbers, the guy has real promise. He's got real speed and defensive skills, and even with the high K rate, he averages 25 doubles, 10 triples and 18 Hrs per 650 PAs. I will say, I'm tired of wishing for health on half our roster. He's another one of those mixed defensive metrics players. He ranks 4th in UZR/150 among the 39 SSs with over 2,000 innings at SS since 2016, but he has a -1 DRS total (21st out of the 39, with Iggy, Andrus and Bogey far below him.) Since 2018, he places 3rd in UZR/150 (+8.5) out of 31 SSs w 2,000 + innings and 17th in DRS at +3. 2019 and 1,500 + innings (32 SSs) 3rd in UZR/150 (+7.7) T12th in DRS (+9), but might have been 7th or 8th with many more innings.
  21. Even if Paxton starts the season on the IL, I see our best 5 SP'ers as... Sale Kluber Whitlock Bello Pivetta With Jansen and Martin as the likely 1-2 punch in the 8th and 9th, I see Schreiber and Houck as the 7th and 8th inning guys, maybe 2 innings at times, and Barnes as the #5 RP'er for the 6th and 7th innings.
  22. Those are the big 3, for sure. Houck's recovery is key, too, and what role will he be given?
  23. If healthy, Devers, Dugo, Kike, Yoshida, Turner and Casas should play everyday. McGuire is the FT catcher, but will not get 550+ PAs. That's 7 FT'ers, but their positions are not all locked down. I think Yoshida in LF and Dugo in RF are close to locks. Casas is going to get a very long look at 1B. Kike's position looked to be SS, until the Mondesi trade. If Mondesi is healthy- I know, big if, he may be the best from Duvall, Arroyo and Tapia. With Duvall being an OF'er, I have to go with Mondesi over Arroyo, which means Kike plays 2B, but yes, ST'ing may flip some scripts. Mega changes on this team, as my last post points out. Only Devers and Pivetta look to be returning to their 2022 majority roles. I guess you can count Schreiber, Barnes and Brasier, but I have all moving down a notch or more on the pen list. This is clearly Bloom's team, now... warts and all.
  24. When is the last time the Sox projected to have a different player at 8 positions from the previous season as well as 4 different SP'ers and a new 1-2 pen punch? Most innings 2022> 2023 projected C: Vaz & Plawecki> McGuire & Wong 1B: Dalbec & Cordero> Casas & Turner 2B: Story & Arroyo> Arroyo & Kike 3B: Devers (Dalbec)> Devers (Turner) SS: Bogey (Arroyo)> Kike & Mondesi LF: Verdugo & Pham> Yoshida (Duvall) CF: Kike & Duran> Duvall & Tapia RF: JBJ & Verdugo/Ref> Verdugo & Ref DH: JD > Turner Even most of the first back-ups have changed! Pitching Staff: S1: Wacha> Sale S2: Hill> Kluber S3: Nate> Whitlock S4: Wink/Craw> Bello S5:Pivetta> Pivetta S6: Seabold> Paxton R1: Houck> Jansen R2: Schreiber> Schreiber R3: Strahm> Martin R4: Whitlock> Houck R5: Barnes> Barnes R6: Sawamura (3rd in RP IP)> Rodriguez R7: Davis (4th in IP)> Mills R8: Brasier (2nd in IP)> Brasier R9+: Danish, Diekman, ort, Robles (all 24+ IP)> Mata, Walter, Wink, Craw, Murphy, German, ort [/color]
