My guess is some Jays fans are thankful they will keep Vlad, Bichette and others over one guy who can't pitch. The Jays do not have an unlimited budget, either.

It's simple to understand, even if you don't agree. Of course, I'd like to see Ohtani play for the Sox, but it's an either or situation with every team, exc epr MAYBE the Dodgers, who apparently did not offer JD a QO, so they could spend on Ohtani. I'd rather watch us win with Yamo, Monty, Lugo, Duvall and Merrifield than watch us lose with Ohtani and nothing else. We need pitching, and Ohtani can't pitch. You are dreaming if you think we'd spend $700M on Ohtani and then spend $400M more on 2 top pitchers. You are basically scolding us for being realistic.

There are owners who spent a lot to buy the team but don't spend heavily on the budget. It's not a given the next guy will spend more than JH, or enough or "more" to make a difference. An owner can make a boatload of money by just getting Sox fans to think we have a chance. JH proved that. "Take a chance" does not sound all that good to me. Yes, sticking with JH is certainly "taking a chance," too. I get that. What JH does with the budget, this year should give us a better understanding of which one seems like the bigger risk. -
I'd still bet the field for 2024.

I celebrated! I did not want Ohtani at$300M. That’s not to say I don’t want us spending $300-700M. I do. I’d just rather we spend it more wisely. I will add that JH did just agree to pay Devers almost50% more than he paid Price. How many teams have. $300M player on their roster?

That is a possibility. Teams also seem to only want ML ready prospects, so guys like Bleis are not coveted all that much. Mayer, Anthony and Teel are close enough. I’m pretty sure one GM really likes one of them enough to pull the trigger. We have some nice 2nd tier prospects to package up that are near ML ready, such as Rafaela, Yorke, Abreu, Valdez plus some young MLB pitchers we could add to get a big prize. Let’s see if Breslow meant what he said. -

They have ramped up the lingo. The sham continues, until we see concrete evidence on the contrary. The Devers extension got our hopes up, but JH pretty much had to do that to keep the sham going. Let’s see if he thinks that was enough to keep the sham rolling. I don’t think Sox fans are that dumb, but we keep buying tickets and cable sports packages. JH can make a boatload of money without rings. He knows that. He has to want a winning team. To those who want him to sell, he will sell to the highest bidder, who may not be someone who will spend more on the budget that he has. Be careful what you wish for. -
And some will fall for the sham, again. I’m not trying to sound hopeful, as I have said I’ll only believe it when I see it, but there is some evidence JH is trending back to spending more. This winter looks like he’ll have to kick it up a few notches, and again, I’ll believe it when I see it. Last year, the team finally reached the 2018 spending level. Since March of 2022, JH has forked over $300M for Devers, $140 for Story and$100M for Yoshida. In that context, going $250-350M for a pitcher may not sound all that absurd. Several teams have passed us in spending, so this is a new era. I’m sure JH knows this. I’m not sure he wants to join the madmen at the top. He might have to in order to get one of the remaining 3 prizes or even 2 of the best leftovers. We’ll see.

I'm thinking maybe the Dodgers will pass on more big contracts for a couple months. Probably not, but I will say the chances are higher, now than had Ohtani signed with TOR.

Just a strong hunch, if Brez was given $700M, this winter, he'd nab at least 2 from Yamo, Snell and Monty, plus find a 2Bman and maybe a CF'er and/or catcher upgrade.

The big spending comes from above Brez's pay grade. Give Brez $700M and he'll do better with it than LA's.

3-4 good ones are available via trade. There is enough for all to get one.

I'm not saying we'll do it, but that $700M would be better spent on 3 pitchers than just Ohtani, so yes, I'd complain if we spent $700M on one guy.

He's not worth half that. That $700M could get us Yamamoto, Snell and Monty.

How many potential owners are out there that will spend significantly more than JH? Next question, JH will not sell to the guy who will spend tge most on the budget. He will sell to he one who pays him the most. Be careful what you wish for.

I’ve given up hoping. I think it’s all a sham. That being said, things can still change. I’ll believe it when I see it.

I doubt the run ins with Cora was the main reason we traded the glorified platoon OFer with one year left.

I would prefer we get a tier 2 guy or two. My point was that we may not out bid others for the remaining good 3-4 SPers left. Leaving us with a best hope of 3 not 2 of the ne t best group. The sham may continue.

As always, yes. They could sign Yamo, Bellinger and Monty and still miss out.

The idea of thinking maybe getting 3 third tier SP'ers might become our best hope for significant rotation improvement. 3 from... Stroman, Imanaga Lugo, Clevinger, Giolito, Wacha Or, two from above plus one of... Paxton, Flaherty, Mahle or maybe Montas

More than a billion dollars for two players: Ohtani and Mookie! While money is differed, it essentially comes to about $100M a year. That is about the same or more than about a third of MLB teams.

So... Yamo to NYM, TOR, NYY? Snell to TOR, NYY? Monty to NYY or BOS? Lugo to BOS?
