  1. Making what up? I said nobody was gushing over him for 4-5 years. Is that untrue? I wasn't even implying anyone was re-writing history or forgetting his injury history. I get why people are gushing and giddy over his 2024 start. He has been amazing, and even better than his stretch in 2023. Who expected this?
  2. My bad. I did not see the post was about Bard not Whit.
  3. Yes, that was who I was asking it, along with you.
  4. Exactly, but how many were gushing over last years pretty decent season? The guy is doing great, now, and he might keep it up. I hope he does. I get the argument for keeping him. Our weakness was thought to be the rotation, and it was for over 4 years, before last winter. It made less sense, when we only signed one SP'er with what amounted to just a portion of the "money saved" in the trade. As great as our rotation has done, this year, we still could have used Sale. (Bell's point about pen starts shows that.) I understand, this is not just hindsight complaining, as many, if not most, disliked the trade when it happened. (I did too, at first, but then I grew to think it was a decent deal, especially if we had spent up to the line, like I had hoped we would do.) Grissom's injury and then worse than piss-poor start has magnified the disparity between these two player current 2024 value. I get that. My point is that all this gushing over Sale was not around for 3-5 years, and now it's like he was never a question mark and a negative impact on 4-5 season teams in a row.
  5. He did a really good job as a RP'er. The ability to go 2-3 innings cannot be undervalued, and his ability to include the 9th inning in those long relief games is somewhat rare. AS RP 2021: 1.96 ERA/2.84 FIP (1.105 WHIP) in 73.1 IP (11 games finished) That's 5-20 more IP than many closers get.) 2022: 0.93/2.21 in first 4 RP games (started 9 games) 3.34/3.05 in 18 games after starting 2022 as RP: 2.75 ERA, 0.788 WHIP (.547 OPS Against) His 2.2 fWAR as a RP'er from '21 to '22 ranked 22nd in MLB. His 73 xFIP- ranked 10th. His 51 ERA- ranked 2nd. His 5.43 K/BB ratio ranked 5th. What does it take to be a good RP'er, for you? That was for 2 years and 112 IP. 2023 was not good: 4.95 as RP (5.23 as SP) .784 OPSA as RP
  6. There was no gushing for 3-4 years, and now this.
  7. True. Most would have been happy with any 2 starters, but I didn't hear anyone specifically saying they wanted Lugo, and there was a long list of SP'ers suggested.
  8. I think we all had hopes for Sale, just like we did for the 5 previous seasons- one by one. He had a real nice long stretch of starting in 2023, which showed he had not "lost it," and just needed to stay healthy. Last 15 starts of 2023: 3.16 ERA/ 3.41 FIP (not vintage Sale, but good enough, for sure) (Note: this 15 start run included missing a 5 week stretch) He was at 3.92/3.96 in his 9 starts after returning from his injury in '23. He has 9 straight starts, this year. That makes 18 straight, over 2 seasons. The last time he did that was....? 2019, when he had a 4.40 ERA (3.39 FIP) I'm a huge Sale fan, and I hope he has a great finish to his career, except when facing us, but I was tired of hoping against hope. 2020 2021 2022 2023 He went 5 seasons dashing our hopes. I got fed up with it. Of course, I wish we had this Sale, for this year, but this deal is so far from being completed. I'm pretty sure we would not have extended him. It looks like we might have taken the $20M option, if he completes this season, like this.
  9. I can't see us adding Mata to the 26, despite being out of options. When his rehab runs out, I think we trade him or try to sneak him through waivers.
  10. "Laughed" was a euphemism. I don't recall a single poster liking the idea. A few like Imanaga. I'm not saying I will be proven correct. They both have a long way to go on their contracts, but there is more gushing over Sale's mini-sample size of 2024 than Lugo, Imanaga, Gray and Monty combined.
  11. Even if he doesn't, he is likely to be about the same as Smith. If he's worse, then just go out an get the next Smith on the cheap.
  12. I was one of the few that was, too- back in 2019. I'm talking about the last 2-3 years: did a single poster ever suggest we extend Sale further? Most were counting the days until his contract expired, while hoping against hope, he;d regain his former glory days. Some were saying he should be our next closer. I don't recall anywhere near this much Sale love in several years. Even when he put together a nice stretch of starts, last year, nobody I remember was saying they expected this for 2024.
  13. Agreed. Maybe memories of Jacoby are too strong.
  14. I believe the 2023-2024 Duran is the one that will continue on into the near future (next 3-4 years.) We all remember the old Duran, always tweaking his swing or stance and bumbling around on D, but we should remember that he started at 2B. I think he is for real, now, but of course, this stretch could be the outlier. With O'Neill becoming a FA, I'd keep Duran, Ref & Abreu. (Rafaela is not going anywhere.)
  15. He may have gotten hurt, a lot, even if he stayed a RP'er, but I tend to agree. Moving him to the rotation probably led to more injuries. (Just my opinion.) Sometimes, moving pitchers to the rotation works, like Crawford. (Houck has moved back and forth.)
  16. Dusty Baker understood the value of catcher-pitcher dynamics by trotting out Maldanado, day after day, despite having very good hitting catchers on the bench. Now, Dusty and Maldanado are gone. Hoiw is that working out for the 'stros?
  17. Good to see Slaten get right back on track after that awful game vs STL. He has really just had 2 bad games (maybe 3) out of 17. He still has more to prove, but he's looking like a nice snag from Rule 5, once again, for the Sox. These 2-3 inning pitchers help save the pen from overwork.
  18. 58+ IP ERA Leaders 1.37 Suarez 1.79 Lugo 1.94 Houck 2.17 Crawford 2.52 Wheeler 2.56 Burnes 2.90 Glasnow 2.98 Berrios 3.05 Cease & Nola 3.10 Fedde 3.20 Gilbert 3.28 L Castillo A lot of these guys changed teams in the last year or two. Others between 50IP and 57 IP 0.84 Imanaga (another guy I hoped we'd sign, last winter) 1.80 Skubal 2.08 J Gray 2.16 R Olson 2.22 some guy formerly named Freakin'
  19. Only Seth Lugo has more IP and a lower ERA than Houck. 0.1 IP more 1.79 ERA to 1.94 Where are the posters who laughed at the idea of signing him? (I'm sure I'll hear from them, if he falls off a cliff.)
  20. SEA beat NYY and STL is up on BAL in the 7th.
  21. Whit did finish 11 games in 2021, although not in the traditional closer-type role. I think all but 3 were 2+ inning closeouts. In 2022, he finished the game in 4 of his first 5 relief games, before moving to the rotation. 8.2 IP in his first 3 games, combined, and the last one was a 9th inning-only game. After returning to the pen, in '22, he finished the game in 7 out of 9 straight games, before finishing the year with 5 games as a strict 7-8th inning guy.
  22. Other than 2020 and this year, it has not been a "smaller payroll." Other teams blew bye us like maniacs. Is that working for all of them? (I'm not defending the guy, but he has spent like no other Sox owner. Count inflation and he still blows the old guard away. I think he should and needs to spend more to get us back in the game. I have no idea if he will or won't.)
  23. I guess I should not be surprised at the Devers bashing.
