  1. I don't see the $11 million for 2020 being worth it. 2016 avg/obp/slg/ops: .267 / .349 / . 486 / .835 -> good player! 2017 avg/obp/slg/ops: .245 / .323 / .402 / .725 -> mediocre player 2018 avg/obp/slg/ops: .234 / .314 / .403 / .717 -> mediocre player (also 17 steals to 1 caught stealing, which is really good) 2019 avg/obp/slg/ops: .225 / .317 / .421 / .738 -> borderline player I don't think we're going to see the 2016 JBJ again. He did crest over 20 homers again, but it was the year of the Manfred missile. His batting average has been trending downwards he could hit .220 or lower in 2020. Defense can only take you so far. I bet we can find someone who can hit better and play defense almost as good for $4 million or less.
  2. I was so gung-ho about Johnson & Velazquez prior to the season. Now, looking at the Sox roster, if the man replacing Porcello's 32 starts is to come from within, I guess they should try out Darwinzon Hernandez and Josh Taylor. But Taylor at this point is one of the rare bullpen success stories so maybe you don't mess with that? DHern is a puzzle. 16.9 strikeouts per nine innings is jaw droppingly good, and a 1.75 walks + hits per inning pitched is jaw droppingly awful.
  3. 5 starting pitchers? Sale/Price/Eovaldi/Rodriguez and who am I missing? Or was that just a sarcasm allegory?
  4. He was the worst first baseman I've ever seen, which is why I brought it up.
  5. I think you mean 2020 If JD leaving means the Sox get Cole or a similar stud pitcher then it's a different story...
  6. Agreed; it's worth a try but you don't want a "block of wood" at first base. Heh, remember Jose Offerman?
  7. I'm glad I'm not the only one who wondered about that.
  8. We definitely do. I've been wondering if he can take the first base job if he stays.
  9. And there's still a 5th pitcher TBD. Maybe we bring back Wade Miley?
  10. Getting rid of dead weight?
  11. I laugh out loud every time someone uses his name as an adjective or verb. I loved him as a Red Sox, but it seems joining the Yankees didn't endear him to anyone.
  12. Okay I see your point. Which brings us back to "don't give contracts to pitchers over 30..." I think the Sox need to ride out these 3 contracts. Even if they traded Mookie Betts for 2 young E-Rod like starters, they wouldn't play instead of Sale/Price/Eovaldi given the money and seniority those guys have.
  13. I didn't realize Sale's injury was different than last year's, or that Price was intentionally restricted. Agreed, all big question marks. Hence pitchers like Porcello, Arroyo, and Lester who always make their starts are so valuable in my opinion.
  14. I'm the most worried about Chris Sale. He doesn't seem able to overcome his physical woes. David Price I'm "cautiously optimistic" that he'll recover. Hopefully he's doing the proper exercises this offseason. Eovaldi at least was able to finish the season pitching, so I'm the most hopeful he will have an excellent 2020.
  15. Well, I suppose that depends upon who our 5th starter is too. I'm in favor of bringing Porcello back. I think they'll fix the problems with the baseball and he'll be able to have a proper grip and execute his pitches.
  16. There is a bright side you know. What if Sale, Price, and Eovaldi are all effective next year? It is definitely within the realm of possibility. Now we'd have 4 effective starters to go along with our dynamite offense. Then we'd just need a couple relievers to step things up to join Workman and we'd be a contending team.
  17. There's no way Harper is worth $30 million/year so the Nationals were lucky to have the years they could out of him then be done.
  18. I'm really not sure Travis can play at the major league level. Do we have other options?
  19. Yeah, if JBJ is gone and Mookie is either traded or moved to 2nd base (hey, I still think it's a legit idea), then you're right Rusney may actually make the team. But isn't his 2020 salary like 13 million? That's even higher than JBJ would get in arbitration, so it would kill our chance of making the luxury tax. Rusney would have to seriously impress...
  20. Who plays 2B and 1B next year?
  21. I sincerely hope extending Sale isn't going to kill the Sox for the next 5 years, but I fear it will. One possible future for the Sox is a legion of dead weight contracts: Pedroia, Sale, Price, & Eovaldi all unable to play due to injuries or ineffectiveness, plus Castillo doomed to AAA forever.
  22. Wait, what happened to Benitendi?
  23. Imagine if Nomar had taken the $15 million for 4 years deal ... do we still win in 2007?
  24. I would hope that the Sox are getting their trainers to work out the best possible offseason strengthening regimen for them, so that they come to 2020 spring training able to pitch for the whole season.
  25. What makes you think Price will pitch a full season? I can't figure out why he couldn't do so this year. He seems plagued by minor injuries. Ellsbury-itis?
