Those numbers tell quite a story. .646 is actually impressive, and makes me want to give him a chance at 5-6 starts in a row where he stays in 6 innings come hell or high water (which admittedly you can only do once you've thrown in the towel) because he just needs to learn how to pitch the 2nd and 3rd times through the order.
Johnson could, for instance, have 30 starts of 3 innings each, thus giving him 90 innings, and that sounds like a lot, but the truth is I think he needs how to learn to face hitters the 2nd and 3rd times through the order, and you really can't do that unless you pitch into the 6th on a regular basis. I've seen other Sox managers allow young pitchers to learn; Cora has the quickest hook of any I remember and I maintain that's a "win now" strategy which worked last year, but this year I think we need to groom players for next year. Now you could argue, perhaps very successfully, that this crop doesn't have the stuff to pitch 6 regularly anyway.
My point is that I don't think Cora knows how to "grow" a pitcher. He has a quick hook, and I've read in the past how pitchers need to learn how to work their way out of jams, even if that means losing some games to do so. Given that we are out of the playoff hunt for 2019, this seems like an excellent time to give players learning opportunities.
I'm happy to be a jackass then. You simply don't give 5 years to a pitcher who was so hurt at the time he couldn't be effective for the entire 2nd half of the season, but has YET to pitch an effective second half of a season since he got here. Sale is a TJ surgery waiting to happen. Even worse, rather than have it now and be back for 2021, they will wait for 2020, when mark my words he will have it in april or may after trying to pitch through pain, and miss all of 2020 and 2021 as well. Maybe he'll be good in 2022? Also, not a future HOFer, sorry.
Win or lose, I'd like to see Johnson go at least 5 innings tonight allowing 3 or less. We need him to show signs he can be a rotation regular. Getting pulled in the third isn't going to cut it.
Unless the Sox score in the double digits, they don't stand a great chance of winning. The fascinating thing about this team is how often they regularly DO reach double digits in runs.
That ball that dropped between the three fielders, the play where the first basemen fielded the ball and had no one to throw to at either 2nd or 1st base. Oh my goodness. They're like a high school team. A bad one.
My guess for the 2020 opening day lineup, assuming Betts isn't traded this offseason (note the 'outfield shuffle').
Betts, CF
Devers, 3B
Bogaerts, SS
Martinez, LF
Benitendi, RF
Chavis, DH
Travis, 1B
Hernandez, 2B
Vazquez, C
I figure Marco Hernandez, Sam Travis, and Michael Chavis will play musical chairs for 2nd and 1st (with possibly the 3rd DH'ing). Either way, I don't see Owings being a part of that.
I was just going to ask, who the heck is this Chris Owings bum and why is he stealing playing time from Marco Hernandez, who I hope will be our 2Bman next year?
Is anyone interested in chatting offseason free agent signings yet? https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/
Assuming they don't bring Porcello back, we need at least one starting pitcher (Sale-Price-ERod-Eovalid-?).
They need potentially 5 quality relievers.
We can move Mookie to center field (if he isn't traded), and then we need a right fielder unless we put JDM there.
At least one infielder.
A back up catcher.
That's a lot of needs, so they may have to bargain shop
Okay, hunting through the free agent list, here's what I've got:
Starting pitcher: How about bringing Wade Miley back? He's only making 4.5 million this year, has a 3.11 ERA, and an 11-4 record. Otherwise Michael Pineda looks like a decent pickup.
Relief pitchers: I won't even try...
Outfielder: Nick Castellanos
Infielder: Eric Sogard
Catcher: Austin Romine
Sure, although Clay in 2013 was a mirror image of Chris Sale in 2018:
Clay 2013: 12-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 108.1 innings, then the show was over.
Chris 2018: 12-4 with a 2.11 ERA in 158 innings, and if you take out his August & September starts, I think the numbers are truly identical.
I hope so. I guess it depends whether this change was intentional or not. Might make sense to bring back Porcello if the ball gets back to being conducive to how he throws it.
I think the ball being manufactured differently theory has merit. I’m especially swayed by Pedro’s speech regarding it where he said his fingers reach farther than they used to when holding one of the newer balls.
It makes me very sad but I think Mookie gets traded this offseason both to free up cash and to bring back young pitching. Remember this fearsome foursome of Betts - Devers - Bogaerts - Martinez folks; you may not see its equal again in your lifetime.
