  1. And you don't believe other GMs know this?
  2. Yup, I don't think the problem is as simple as "they're relying on Carmine and Bill James too much" or "they're relying on the scouting dept too much" There's a fundamental flaw somewhere in baseball ops. Hopefully, hiring Dipoto (as a consultant, not a replacement for Cherrington, BTW) is the first step in correcting it.
  3. If you think this exchange constitutes a "major s*** storm", I'd say you're a tad sensitive. If you think that it takes both strategies to make an informed opinion, why make "disparaging" comments about stats or their use at all? I think stats are a vital part of free agent signing and minor league player development. But, I don't make remarks about scouts and the important job they do. Just doesn't make a lot of sense to me to pick one over the other. So, lighten up, Francis.
  4. Well, it is confusing when you say stat and scouting should be used, but them take shots at "stat geeks". Who knew that enjoying numbers was some sort of character flaw. Waltr disregards pretty much every stat that was created after 1970 and you seemed to agree with him. "Slightly hypocritical" doesn't translate well in written form.
  5. "If you are simply one or the other, you are a fool." LOL So picking picking stats over scouting (although no team does that) is foolish. But, rejecting additional information out of hand isn't? Too funny...
  6. I don't equate what's written in the media with what an organization sees in a player. Media-based speculation about a player is generally over-blown, particularly when that team is losing. Lackey's attitude towards his teammates, concerning blown plays was a big deal when he was pitching badly and the Sox were losing, despite statements from players saying what a great clubhouse guy he was. A lot fans couldn't wait to get rid of the bum. In 2013, Lackey wasn't a problem. I think Hanley's attitude problems are overblown too. If the team were in contention, it wouldn't be an issue.
  7. How much say he had in the matter isn't the point. If there were discussions in the Sox FO about Hanley's attitude and that factored into the reasons for trading him, I think Cherrington would be aware of that.
  8. You do need a job. You'll have a whole slew of new reasons to be miserable.
  9. Yeah, but do they make you see funny avatars?
  10. You should try 'shrooms. They're all natural!
  11. I was thinking 'shrooms.
  12. Not gonna happen, Skippy.
  13. I love it. Take a quote from someone else and then dictate to them what it means. Arrogant DBs.
  14. Shaw hit .249 w/ 5 HR in Pawtucket this year. Yeah, he had a great weekend. People act like they're holding back the next Mo Vaughn.
  15. Keep Buchholz. Keep Owens in Pawtucket for when Buchholz goes on the DL.
  16. That's what I meant.
  17. Agreed. I know it's fashionable to harp on the last place thing, but if a team doesn't make the playoffs, does it really matter where they finish? They'd be just as lousy of they managed to finish ahead of the Jays or Rays. Folks want to trade half the rotation like last year. Well, that'll pretty much guarantee another "last place finish". And try telling Cubs fans that you can win a WS by being a "fluke". Just dumb...
  18. Does not doing something count? Not trading Bogaerts or Betts. Trading Miller for Eduardo Rodriguez. Other than that, I'm drawing a blank...
  19. You can't get in-depth analysis like this just anywhere...
  20. Oh, that's just great!
  21. That's a tough one. They're all pretty bad....
  22. It's also possible that the Sox told Hanley to either work on getting better in LF or move to 1b, a move he has not been in favor of. Let's hope he chose the former and plans to actually work at it. He's still far from great, but he has improved.
  23. And if they comment on posts they supposedly can't see, they're morons.
  24. Really easy to say. Not easy to do. Yeah, he's overrated by everyone in baseball. But you, of course...
  25. Hope it works out for them. ABY.
