  1. How many bloop hits are the Jays going to get today?
  2. We need the offense not to go to sleep for the rest of the game. Keep the pressure on.
  3. You said exactly what I was trying to say, only you said it much more concisely.
  4. He is sporting a new look. Maybe that has been his problem. LOL
  5. It's nice to be on the other side of a 4-0 early lead for a change. Clay needs to hold this lead.
  6. There needs to be improvement from the rotation from what we've seen. As I've already posted, I think there is reason to expect that improvement. The talent is there for there to be some improvement. Mind you, I'm not talking about improvement to the point of being one of the best rotations in the league, but rather improvement to the point of being middle of the pack. If the rotation can improve to that point, then they will be good enough to keep the team afloat when the offense gets it going. And reinforcements will be coming, either from within or through trade. Even as bad as our rotation has been in some starts, if our offense had come through in even half of the games in which we gave up 4 or fewer runs and lost, things would not look nearly as bad as they do right now.
  7. I don't mind posts in which he is critical of the Sox or complimentary of the Yankees. He's a Yankees fan. I expect that, and have even defended that in the Yankees threads. His post in this thread is mostly spot on. It's the teacher in me. I don't accept C work when I know one is capable of A work. I expect better. People tend to rise to the level of your expectations. It doesn't always work, but I can at least try.
  8. I don't think it's a motivational issue either, but when things are going bad, it has to weigh on the players emotionally, physically, and mentally. Sometimes, just having a "pep talk" does wonders. As far as the "huge talent issues", I would have to disagree. Yes, there are some "talent issues" with the rotation. IMO, the problems with the line up are not due to a lack of talent.
  9. I like it too. The veterans need to show some leadership. I read something about how some guys were starting to get down on themselves, and Ortiz was all about telling them to keep their heads up. Good move.
  10. Craig's value is really low right now, so even if the Sox were thinking of trading him, they would not get much in return. Perhaps what Craig needs is to play everyday to get his stroke back to some semblance of what it was a couple of years ago. I think people tend to forget exactly how good he was not too long ago. And he's not so old that we should be expecting an age-related decline, not of this magnitude anyway. The Pawtucket outfield's salary is now close to $100 mil.
  11. If nothing else, maybe having him with the team will infuse some energy into them.
  12. LOL VA. Great minds! I hope I didn't overstep my bounds, starting this thread. I will gladly defer to you.
  13. Since it's Mother's Day, it's only fitting for a mother to start the game thread today. No, I don't mean the kind of "mother" that a lot of you guys are. Clay "The Stopper" Buchholz (1-4, 6.03 ERA) vs R.A. "I'm Going to Get Lit Up by the Pink Bats Today" Dickey (1-3, 4.38 ERA) Bring on the Mother Mojo! Let's do it!
  14. Jacko, when you are not trolling, you are actually a decent poster. That's why I am so disappointed in your trollish and childish behavior. This rotation was supposed to be helped greatly by the defensive duo of Vazquez/Hanigan. How can losing your #1 and #2 catchers so early in the season not hurt? This is not to take anything away from Swihart and Leon. Both of those guys are solid, even very good, defensively. One problem is that Swihart is not ready. He needed more time in AAA. The other problem is that neither Swihart nor Leon have very much major league experience, and more importantly, very little familiarity with our pitching staff. No matter how good they are, developing that pitcher/catcher comfort and confidence level takes time, and a learning curve is to be expected. They are doing the best they can, but I'm sure part of our pitching woes are due to not having Vazquez/Hanigan behind the plate.
  15. I was reading an article about how the analytics department of the Yankees kept pushing for the Yankees to sign Chris Young. His slash line looked horrible with the Mets, but the analytics guys saw something in his peripheral stats that suggested that he would rebound. Good call.
  16. I don't think the optimists lose hope first. I think they get tired of listening to people who are constantly bringing them down with unending negativity and the "I told you so" attitude.
  17. Well it sure doesn't sound like there is much hope around here.
  18. Craig and Kelly both have options and less than 5 years of service time. Either one of them can be sent down. Farrell hinted after the game that changes were coming. It sounds like Craig might be going down with JBJ coming up. Perhaps some other changes are coming as well. This line up needs to shaken up.
  19. No, I did not ignore that his xFIP is a run below his career average. I stated that even if Clay regresses to his career xFIP, that is still a full 2 runs below his ERA. Also, no one said that Clay would be a top of the rotation starter. If he only improves to 4.5 ERA (think QS, 3 runs in 6 innings), that is pitching well enough to keep the team in the game, provided the offense wakes up. No, a 4.5 ERA is not great, but once again, this team was built to win 7-6 games, not 2-1 games.
  20. Well, it's May 9. There is no way I'm giving up hope on this season, no matter how bad they look. If the offense hits like they're supposed to, I believe that the rotation can be good enough to get us to the postseason, or at least keep us afloat until a trade can be made or some of the youngsters are ready. I may be a pollyanna, but my optimism is not blind optimism. There is reason to be optimistic that the staff will improve.
  21. That is not Fangraphs definition of a #1 or #2 pitcher. That is their breakdown of what a very good player, solid player, etc. is. That does not necessarily equate to rankings of pitchers as #1, #2, etc.
  22. Just like last year JBJ was not the reason why our offense sucked. It's the other guys in the lineup who are supposed to be carrying this team, but aren't. We are a major league worst 4-45 with RISP in the month of May.
