  1. No one is saying that they will be good. But they should be league average, which is a significant improvement over league worst. Again, this team was built around a strong offense and mediocre pitching. The offense is supposed to carry the team. If the rotation can be mediocre instead of terrible, that should be good enough to keep them in the race. I disagree that there were plenty of stats that indicated this rotation could turn out to be very bad. IMO, there was more of an indication that there would be some improvement from a couple of the guys. A "disturbing trend" downward for Masterson and Buchholz? You're exaggerating just a tad. It's interesting, however, that a bad year from Buchholz and an injured Masterson is a disturbing trend downward, but a good year from Porcello is a fluke.
  2. I realize it's just a projection, and that the starters might continue to stink as badly as they have been. I'm just saying that there is some reason to be optimistic. Either way, I think we all expected that a trade would be made for another starter near the deadline if the team is still in the hunt. The offense has been just as much to blame as the pitching, IMO. They were supposed to be the best in the league. They are near the bottom in several offensive categories. They have to get better too.
  3. I agree. The offense has to get the job done when the starter keeps the team within reasonable striking distance. Go Sox!!!
  4. Ha! Good for you! Star Wars > Star Trek I'm sure that will go over well. LOL
  5. Outside of Porcello, the starters' current ERAs are roughly 2 runs higher than their career ERAs. Their current ERAs are also significantly higher than their most recent 3 year averages, 2 year averages, and last year's ERAs. In other words, we are talking about career worst ERAs, by substantial margins, for 4 of our 5 starters. That is enigmatic, especially considering their FIPs and xFIPs. It has to get better. Some of you are saying that you saw this coming before the season started, but you couldn't have foreseen all of them to be underperforming to the extent that they are underperforming. Some of you agree that it will get better, but not enough for this team to contend. If these guys were pitching at their career levels, or at last year's level, as I'm sure the FO was banking on, the picture would look a lot different.
  6. The offense, especially Panda, has been particularly struggling against LHP. Seattle has altered its rotation to have as many LHPs start against us as possible. I've also heard that the Seattle announcers thing the M's will sweep the Sox. How rude of them. Let's show them who's boss! Get it done, boys!
  7. There is nothing wrong with being a nerd.
  8. LOL This forum does not suffer from a lack of crudeness.
  9. I realize that a 4.5 ERA does not mean that a pitcher will have a 4.5 ERA every game. The point is, this team was not built based on the idea of having its rotation dominate lineups. It was built on the philosophy that the rotation would pitch well enough to keep the team in most games, and the offense would take it from there. If a starter is going 5-7 innings giving up 3-4 runs on most outings (roughly 4.5 ERA), we should be able to win a lot of those games. Sure, there will be games when the starter gives up more runs, but there will also be games where he give up fewer runs.
  10. Well, no one expected him to be an ace. His career ERA is 3.92, and that is with his 6.91 ERA from this year averaged in. Say he is a 4.5 ERA guy. Again, think quality start. If he pitches 6 innings and gives up 3 runs, I'd take that. The offense is supposed to be able to win those games.
  11. Masterson has had a couple of really bad outings, but he pitched decently in 4 of his starts. He has by no means been great, but I don't think he's been as overall bad as some are making him out to be.
  12. I had to ask what it meant. I'm sorry I did. LOL
  13. I would have to disagree with that assessment, but I'll spare you the stats. He's not an ace, but he is not a 6+ ERA pitcher either. I'll agree that allowing that many baserunners is asking for trouble, but I will take his 6 2/3 IP with 0 runs any day of the week.
  14. "Wade Miley allowed 9 baserunners (5H+4BB) and 0R in 6.2IP today. The most BRs allowed w/ 0 runs in 6.2IP? Wade Miley, 14 on 8.21.14 #Houdini Miley also allowed 11 baserunners on 7.30.14 in 6.2IP with no runs. 9 is nothing."
  15. Once upon a time I could stay up for these late games..... Pal was saying how inconsiderate the schedule makers were, scheduling the west coast games before he moved out there. I was thinking the same thing. How inconsiderate of the schedule makers to schedule the west coast games before I am on summer vacation. Yes a700, it is always about me.
  16. By the time 10 pm rolls around, I am exhausted. I did well to stay up until 10:30 ish last night to catch the first few innings. LOL
  17. LOL, to high school students, 30 is ancient.
  18. Justin "Master of My Domain" Masterson (2-1, 5.18 ERA) vs Drew "I've Completely Lost It" Pomeranz (1-3, 5.12 ERA) It's always nice to start the west coast swing with a win. Have to keep it going. Mother Mojo times three!!! Let's go!
  19. I wake up at 5 am on weekdays. Unless it's a playoff game, there's no way I'm staying up until 1 am or later for a west coast game. I'm actually watching the game right now, even though I know the outcome of it.
  20. Well said SK. You really need to post more.
  21. It's generational for me too. I do not go back as far as some of you guys do, but I've had my fair share of heartbreak. My father reminds me often about how great a time this is to be a Red Sox fan. Things could be a lot worse.
  22. Small samples, but here are the numbers for our staff pitching to different catchers: Hanigan: ERA 4.34, K/W 2.57, Opposing hitters slash .251/.321/.389/.710 Swihart: ERA 5.37 K/W 1.67, Opposing hitters slash .292/.362/.469/.831 Leon: ERA 5.97 K/W 2.00, Opposing hitters slash .277/.349/.467/.816 Again, these are small samples, but the differences are noticeable.
  23. Rick "The Bonafide #2" Porcello (3-2, 4.38 ERA) vs Scott "Don't Call Me Cashmere" Kazmir (2-1, 2.75 ERA) The Sox got a nice win yesterday to take them into their west coast swing. One game winning streak! Let's continue the Mother Mojo to make it 2 in a row tonight! Get it done boys!
  24. Little known Clay fact: Out of pitchers with at least 10 starts at Rogers Centre, Clay has the lowest ERA at 2.16.
