  1. Last year, Porcello's 2.7 WAR puts him tied for 38th among starting pitchers. That is a #2.
  2. If he maintains a 2.7 WAR over the life of the contract, it won't be a bad one.
  3. Using ERA alone is a faulty way of judging a pitcher. I posted earlier how bad the Tigers' infield defense was, and how that affected Porcello's ERA. He is a better pitcher than his ERA reflects.
  4. ERAs well over 4 due in large part to the crappy defense behind him. He has posted WARs of 2.7, 2.8, and 2.7 in the last 3 seasons. That puts him in the #2 category.
  5. While looking at a proven track record is always wise, the Sox have chosen to give Porcello a contract based on what they project for the future, rather than give a contract to Lester based on what he has done in the past. Porcello is likely to improve, Lester is likely to decline. The Sox are paying in part for Porcello's age and upside based on their metrics. Obviously, they think he will be worth it, more so than Lester will be worth his contract. This is not a knock on Lester. I am among those who really wanted him re-signed. But the Sox not re-signing Lester does not make Porcello's deal a bad one.
  6. I think you are overestimating the WAR value of pitchers. Last year, there were 10 pitchers who posted a WAR of 5 or above. In each of the 2 previous years, there were only 7. Are you saying there are that few #1 pitchers in baseball?
  7. Porcello was a #3 based on what?
  8. One month sounds good. And nothing obscene.
  9. About the whole betting thing, I don't mind a harmless sig bet, not that I would ever feel the need to propose one. However, since a bet was offered to me, and I am confident enough in my opinion of Porcello, I accepted the bet. Not a problem. What I don't like is the insinuation by a couple of posters here that if one is not willing to accept a bet, that he/she is a chicken, a wuss, less of a man, less of a person, or otherwise has some type of character flaw. Or that said person doesn't really believe what he/she is saying. Some people just don't bet, for any number of reasons. It's as simple as that. Trying to prove one's manliness through betting is kind of silly, IMO.
  10. It's funny, the AL East was projected to be the weakest division in the AL this year, with neither of the wildcards coming out of this division. That may still be the case because it's way to early to get a good feel for things, but as of now, the East only has one team under .500, the Central has 2 under .500, and the only team in the West that is above .500 is the mighty Astros. Go figure. Whatever the case, it's too early to panic. Memorial Day will also be too early to panic.
  11. You're not crazy, because I agree with you, and I know I'm not crazy. I won't go as far as predicting the Sox to win the WS, but I still predict that they'll win the division. The Yankees have gone on an .800 win streak, winning 12 of their last 15. We know that's not going to continue. In the meantime, the Sox have played .400 ball, winning only 6 of their last 15. We know that's not going to continue either. Our pitching will not be as bad as it was last week, and our offense will eventually click like it's supposed to. It will be a tight division all season. The standings and first place will likely change numerous times. When it's all said and done, I think the Sox will end up on top.
  12. Thanks Thunder. I'm not so sure about that, as there are some pretty witty posters here with some great zingers, but thanks.
  13. You also "knew" that Lavarnway and, if I'm not mistaken, Middlebrooks were can't miss prospects. In other words, you don't know. You have an opinion which may or may not pan out.
  14. Bostopz, you can continue replying to whatever thread you want. I don't mind your replies. I honestly just don't know how to respond to some of your posts. You are arguing points that I am not making, and you are insisting that I don't really believe something that I've said I strongly believe in. There's no sense in trying to debate those things.
  15. I think that a closer should be used in the 7th or 8th, if that is where a true save situation arises. Games are often won or lost in those innings, and saving the closer for the 9th becomes a moot point. That said, relievers tend to be superstitious creatures of habit. I'm guessing some of them would be less effective if their "routine" is disrupted.
  16. Your best hitters should be at the top order, basically in descending order of OBP, with some consideration of putting your sluggers in the 4 and 5 spots. However, batting order really makes so little difference that dropping a guy down 2 spots because he is struggling or because of matchups is more or less pointless. What is more beneficial for a manager to do is to alternate R-L-R-L so that the opposing manager can't use a LOOGY for 2 consecutive batters.
  17. I don't follow boxing at all, but I have heard that he is a Class A, arrogant a-hole. Anyone who hits women is, but even without that, I understand he is pretty bad. Anyway, like I said before, I don't understand the appeal of boxing. I don't understand how/why this fight is such a big, can't miss event.
  18. Well, one thing I have said repeatedly is that I like the depth of this team. Thankfully, Swihart is supposed to be a very good defensive catcher and pitch framer as well as being good offensively. I just hope he's ready, and I hope that the pitchers' period of adjustment and gaining familiarity with Swihart is not a bumpy one.
  19. The Yankees announcers were being a little overdramatic, as is usually the case. I could not tell if the booing was greater than normal, but ARod commented something to the effect that he usually doesn't hear the booing, but that last night's was hard to ignore.
  20. I would be gloating too, but I would be doing it here on a Red Sox forum. I would not go to a Yankees board and post something like that in the Yankees fans' game thread.
  21. This is the post of the year, IMO. The Yankees organization is being hypocritical too. On the one hand, they are praising ARod for how well he's hitting, how much he's helped the team so far this season, and how well-behaved he's been. On the other hand, they going to battle him over $6 million.
  22. His velocity average around 87 -88, I believe.
  23. Oh believe me, I know. I have even posted before that I thought Jacko seemed like a pretty good guy, for a Yankees fan. I just didn't appreciate the need to rub it in our faces. If he's on a Yankees game thread on a Yankees forum, then gloat away. Doing so in a Red Sox game thread is just obnoxious.
  24. I'm not sure if Porcello's HR splits have much to do with Comerica's dimensions or just the fact that Porcello, being a RHP, has better numbers against RHB. His HRs are pretty evenly split between home and away parks (60 and 57, respectively), though that doesn't really prove anything. At any rate, if Porcello can keep the ball on the ground, then he won't be hurt by Fenway's short LF. Pitchers' HR rates are unstable, with no obvious rhyme or reason. Here is a good read on why Porcello will likely overcome his early HR problem. http://boston.locals.baseballprospectus.com/2015/04/24/rick-porcellos-home-run-problem-an-illustrated-guide/
  25. This really stinks. It was bad enough to lose Vazquez, and now Hanigan. I have never really concerned myself with the offensive side of a catcher, but I really appreciate most of Hanigan's at bats.
