  1. Breslow is not a buffoon. Calculated, yes. He may also be cold, but I think you have to have a degree of coldness in order to be a good GM. I would not make a good GM. I would have still had the entire 2004 teams playing for the Red Sox 10 years later.
  2. This is awesome and well-deserved Maddie! Congrats! I always enjoy reading your pieces. Keep them coming!
  3. I agree that teams are spending more than they otherwise would, reluctantly, to keep up with the Joneses. The direction that free agent spending has taken is crazy. IMO, they need to disallow deferrals, at the very least. It does seem that teams may now be trending towards shorter length contracts with higher AAVs. That's a start, but even those contracts are outrageous. Bregman's $40M a year was crazy enough,
  4. The schools in southeastern Virginia do the same thing. They cancel school because of the potential of inclement weather, then we typically end up getting rain. LOL Today and tomorrow are teacher workdays, so there was no need to cancel school this time around. BTW, snow days are not what they used to be! They actually don't cancel school anymore, but rather go with a virtual learning day.
  5. It makes sense that we'd want the best overall defensive alignment possible. It's very possible that Rafaela at 2B and Duran in CF would be a better overall alignment than the other way around. I would really, really hate to lose Rafaela's elite defense in CF, but playing him at 2B could be a solution to filling that position and dealing with our crowded outfield. With that being said, I'm not sure why Duran couldn't work his way to being a solid defender at 2B, I'm sure the Red Sox have a reason for not considering him there, but I'm not sure what it is.
  6. He would need to take reps there, for sure. I know it's been a while, but it's not like he hasn't played the position before. He's athletic enough. That said, I know that we need strong infield defense. I'm just curious as to why this has not been a consideration.
  7. Could Duran realistically play 2nd base? That would solve some problems.
  8. I am not a fan of signing the shiny toy for an outrageous contract. I'd much prefer to get the two "2nd tier" players for $20M each on shorter terms. IMO, it's a better value. Breslow has done quite a bit this offseason. I am very pleased with his work so far this offseason. We need that one remaining piece...
  9. I just don't understand the sentiment that Henry is cheap. I guess until he spends like the Dodgers, he will be considered cheap by some. Breslow, and thereby Henry, said he would repurpose the money from Devers contract. He has done that. He said he would get us a #2 pitcher. He has done that. And then some. The only thing remaining on his to do list is adding a big bat. He somewhat did that with Contreras, but not enough. We need another infielder. I am very confident that one is coming. At this point, I'd be just as good adding a strong defensive 2B or 3B over an offensive one.
  10. Upgrading at catcher is just not a priority for me. Narvaez might regress some offensively, but he is a solid defensive catcher, and the pitching staff speaks highly of him. If you're looking to upgrade the offense, which the Red Sox undoubtedly are, upgrade it elsewhere.
  11. Thank you for posting this. I was too lazy to look it up. I am a firm believer in keeping as much depth as possible, and therefore, sending guys down who have options remaining as opposed to having to DFA someone who doesn't have options. But that's only to a certain extent, and I think it pertains more to relief pitchers than to starters. For instance, I don't think anyone would consider sending Crochet down because he has options. I feel the same with Bello. Fortunately, it looks like most of our pitchers have at least one option remaining.
  12. True, but that doesn't make me feel any better regarding the Dodgers. The $40M we pain Bregman was bad enough.
  13. This thread needs to be bumped often to remind baseball fans, near and far, just how much the Dodgers are ruining baseball. I'll give the Dodgers credit though, the deal is only for 4 years. 🙄
  14. Unless he sustains an injury in spring training, I am pretty confident that Bello will be part of our starting rotation, despite the fact that he has options remaining. IMO, the Red Sox are committed to him.
  15. I know we have an abundance of pitchers. Most of us were anticipating some trades coming involving our pitchers. I just wouldn't trade Bello because he's too high up on the totem pole. Of course it goes without saying that anyone is tradeable if the return is right. I wouldn't do a lateral trade of Bello for a position player. The position player would have to be a clear upgrade over what Bello brings to the rotation.
  16. No doubt. I can live with a contract like this. The 10-year contracts are a whole other story.
  17. Good points Joe. As with most baseball moves, we need more than a couple of seasons to fully assess what's going on, good or bad. To date, I have been happy with Breslow overall.
  18. I still haven't forgiven the Sox for letting Lester go. If I recall correctly, the contract that he was looking for before he hit free agency was pretty reasonable. I would not have matched the Cubs offer for him, but they could have gotten him for less had they extended him before FA. But, I digress. Yes, the Sox did a big pivot in signing Price. It seems that Henry had a 'win at any cost' itch, then pivoted back to his more rigid philosophy.
  19. You have to get to the playoffs first. It's likely that both Bello and Early, and others, will be needed in our quest to make the playoffs.
  20. Yeah, it did kind of come out of nowhere. I certainly wasn't expecting it. I guess because Breslow was a pitcher, he feels that adding pitching is more important than adding position players? I tend to agree with that, but I also agree that we need to add an infielder. We don't necessarily need one of the big bat type, but we need another infielder.
  21. You and I have always been on the same page in terms of years on contracts.
  22. Unless it's for a significant upgrade in offense/defense, I hope not. That kind of defeats the purpose of signing Suarez IMO.
  23. I'm guessing it's a longer contract than Breslow would have preferred, but like I said, I think it needed to be done. Something had to be done. It's an overpay in years, but not in terms of AAV. IMO, it's not a gross overpay.
  24. I am happy about the signing. I like this much better than Bregman at $165M/5, even if the Bregman deal had deferrals. I may not be so happy about it in 4 years, but today, I'm happy. 🙂
