  1. You and I have always been on the same page in terms of years on contracts.
  2. Unless it's for a significant upgrade in offense/defense, I hope not. That kind of defeats the purpose of signing Suarez IMO.
  3. I'm guessing it's a longer contract than Breslow would have preferred, but like I said, I think it needed to be done. Something had to be done. It's an overpay in years, but not in terms of AAV. IMO, it's not a gross overpay.
  4. I am happy about the signing. I like this much better than Bregman at $165M/5, even if the Bregman deal had deferrals. I may not be so happy about it in 4 years, but today, I'm happy. 🙂
  5. This is another one of those deals that I would prefer to be 1 or 2 years shorter, but I think it needed to be done. Time will tell how well he holds up towards the end of his contract.
  6. With the addition of Suarez, I'd be fine with the Red Sox focusing more on a strong defensive 2nd baseman as opposed to one with a stronger bat.
  7. Nice! This should appease Red Sox fans, after being disappointed, understandably so, about missing out on Bregman and some others. It makes me happy, for sure. Suarez really, really solidifies our starting rotation. Well done Red Sox.
  8. With the exception of the Dombrowski era, the Red Sox have always been rather rigid, following their models very closely, when it comes to spending on free agents, . Even the great Theo used this philosophy. They will budge under the right circumstances. Breslow probably won't be handing out any 10 year contracts any time soon, but I'm thinking that his offer to Bregman might have already been beyond what his models said.
  9. The Reds (and a few other teams) need to spend more money, I agree. The Dodgers are the team that are the main culprit behind these skyrocketing contracts. Both are guilty.
  10. I hope that we add either a 2B or a 3B, but if it came down to it, I'd actually be okay with Campbell at 2B and Mayer at 3B. I know that I am in a very small minority with that opinion. My only problem with that is the lack of depth we have at those positions, similar to what we faced last year when Casas went down. At any rate, I'm guessing that if they don't add a 2B or 3B, they'd go with Romy at 2B over Campbell.
  11. fWAR is a better predictive stat, and it's my typical go-to. bWAR is a better descriptive stat of what has actually happened on the field.
  12. No, they are not this rigid. If they were, they wouldn't have given Devers the contract that they gave him.
  13. Fair point. I still feel like Bregman went for the most money, but I'm not arguing that he won't have a good opportunity with the Cubs. Not that I was a Cano fan, and I was glad that he left the Yankees, but I also thought that signing with the Mariners was a bad move for him career-wise. I guess it doesn't matter if you're making that much money though. It's very disheartening to me that most players just go for the most money.
  14. IMO, the Red Sox are right to set a limit on what they will spend on any particular player. Otherwise, things could get crazy trying to outbid another team. I don't like that teams are able to defer so much of a player's salary. I think MLB should do away with that.
  15. I have to disagree with that statement. For me, it's not what the market is bearing that makes it an overpay or not, it's what the player is worth in terms of production. I still blame the Dodgers.
  16. We sure turned on Kristian Campbell pretty quickly. For the first month of the season, we couldn't give him enough accolades. Now, it seems that many have all but given up on him. Let us be reminded that he has all of 263 PAs at the big league level.
  17. I get the sentiment that the Sox have to do something, even if it's an overpay. I also get the angst at missing out on yet another player because the Sox were not willing to up their bid. I'm not saying that I would have outbid the Cubs, but I do understand how fans are feeling, especially in the wake of the Devers trade. I feel like the Sox have to make at least one more fairly significant upgrade. Surprise us Breslow.
  18. This is a fair point, Hitch. I can understand a player wanting the security of being in the same place for the sake of his young family. I really respect a player who will leave some money on the table in order to prioritize family or something else. That said, my impression here is that Bregman went for the most money. I'm not saying that the no-trade clause didn't factor into his decision, but I think Sox would have had to offer more money to get Bregman to stay.
  19. You have to be willing to overpay to an extent. Grossly overpaying in order to beat out another team who already has a too large offer to the player I disagree with. The Sox reported offer of $160M/5 would have been overpay enough.
  20. These GMs continue to confound me with the lengths that they will go to in order to sign a player. I am glad to see that many posters agree that this contract was too much to give to Bregman, as much as we love him.
  21. I was not saying to simply add a 2 WAR pitcher or position player. I am saying that improving the pitching by 2 WAR has the same effect as improving the offense by 2 WAR. Net improvement. Yes, trying to improve the starting pitching is probably going to cost more and is probably more difficult to do.
  22. Moot point now, but yes, it would be. I have always been in favor of a higher AAV for fewer years, rather than a longer contract at a lower AAV. I know that a higher AAV hurts us more in terms of the luxury tax, but too many years has always been a deal breaker for me.
  23. I agree that replacing the loss of Crochet would be a difficult fix. He was our best player by almost 2 fWAR. That loss would be difficult for just about any team to overcome. I agree 100% on the importance of develop overall organizational depth.
