  1. I know it's been said many times, but I am very glad that the Sox did not re-sign Ells to that enormous contract, Mookie or no Mookie. Having Mookie makes that decision all the sweeter.
  2. Buchholz is no competition for MVP mojo! Go Sox!
  3. Wright figured out how to cut down his walk rate a couple of years ago. When Dickey learned how not to walk batters, he won the Cy Young. I'm not saying that Wright is going to win the Cy, but if he can continue to keep the walks in check, he should be very successful.
  4. Long live Pablo!
  5. I didn't watch the Yankees game last night, but it doesn't seem like CC was the problem. What did he pitch? 5 1/3, giving up 3 runs? Not great, but I'd take that all day long from my #5. Your offense right now reminds me of our 2014 offense.
  6. You have to go in through the back door.
  7. As Bellhorn mentioned, the biggest testimonials to Varitek's ability to call games came from his pitchers. It wasn't just one or two pitchers, but virtually every pitcher who threw to him praised him in that regard. At the very least, the pitchers believed in him, and that confidence in a catcher has a huge impact on performance. I watched many a game where Varitek was able to coax a pitcher through 5-6 innings when that pitcher seemingly had nothing. Maybe it's semantics. It would be more fitting to say that Varitek excelled at "handling the pitching staff" rather than saying he excelled at game calling, though the latter contributes to the former.
  8. I did not. I'll have to go back and look for it later.
  9. I don't think his game calling ability is voodoo. Max Marchi did a study on this and his findings support what many of his pitchers have said about him. Game calling ability goes beyond simply having a game plan. One of the most important aspects of being a good game caller is the ability to make adjustments in game for any number of reasons. Being able to successfully change the game plan and knowing when to change the game plan is what Varitek excelled at, IMO.
  10. I have no problem with people being down on his play last season. He was awful. Being down on him about being lazy, not caring, and/or being a clubhouse cancer is another story.
  11. ^^This. I have argued this point many times. Just because a move did not work out doesn't mean that it was the wrong call, and vice versa. Also, while I might question a move, I tend to give the manager the benefit of the doubt when it comes to in game moves. He is with the players day in and day out and is privy to information that we might not be privy to. Farrell has had me scratching my head a few times this season, but as I've said before, he certainly deserves longer than a few weeks before thinking about replacing him.
  12. Personally, I think Varitek's ability as a catcher was underrated, not overrated. Over his career, he saved the team more runs defensively than most people realize. Not saying that he could jump right into managing, but his catching ability was not wildly overrated.
  13. Sox score again in the first!
  14. I don't know if you're talking about yourself or MVP or both, but I'll pat you both on the back.
  15. I was going to mention the chicken and beer thing. Had the team been winning, it would have been a non-issue. Same thing with the Panda cell phone thing. When things are going bad, those stories get blown way out of proportion.
  16. And yet, there are still daily negative comments from others about Pablo. I believe it was PA who said something about why continue to harp on Pablo when there are so many positive things going on with this team?
  17. I actually had Shaw penciled in as insurance for Hanley in case Hanley turned into a huge liability.
  18. I made that post tongue in cheek. For one, Pablo will be on the DL for a long time, so it's really a moot point. For two, I love the way Shaw is playing on both sides of the ball. At this point, I want Shaw playing everyday, even if Pablo were healthy. For three, the defensive metric that I posted really means nothing without more context, particularly in such a small sample.
  19. I second this as well. When a team is going bad like were last year, that's when you typically hear stories about how someone is dogging it or is a bad clubhouse presence. Yet, we never heard that about Hanley. He got a bum rap last season from a lot of fans. I'm glad that he seems to have found his home at 1B. FTR, I did not want him moving to 1B either. I'm glad he has proven me wrong.
  20. I read yesterday that Porcello has gone 6 or more innings in 12 straight starts, which puts him second only to Arrieta. There is a lot of value in that, in and of itself.
  21. Some of my favorite people are lefties, including Lester, UN?, and Cycles. That said, I have found that lefties, on the whole, are an odd group. LOL
  22. I liked reading Wright's comment about getting to fly back to Boston ahead of the rest of the team to get ready for his start today. He is really enjoying this whole starting pitching thing. Go Sox!
  23. They are slugging .280 as a team. I didn't think that was possible.
  24. Jeter was nowhere close to average as a defender.
  25. I think Swihart stock is higher in the eyes of other GMs than he is in some of our fans' eyes. Swihart is still young. He did an admirable job when he was thrown into the fire last season before he was ready. He just needs more time to develop behind the plate.
