  1. Let me first say that my choice of everyday catcher is and has always been Vazquez. This is nothing against Swihart. As you said, he did a very good job last year when he was nowhere near ready to be called up. That said, my feeling is that if the team, and in particular the rotation, had not been in a mini scuffle at that time, Swihart would not have been sent down that quickly. The Swihart move alone is not an issue. The Swhihart move along with everything else I've seen so far in the Dombrowski era, including the FO's very own admission of a sense of urgency, concerns me in terms of the long term ramifications.
  2. You are correct. There are other things to consider, but for the most part, if you put your batters in order of descending OBP, you will have a much better lineup than what the conventional line up looks like.
  3. I think some of the over aggressiveness in the past two seasons has been due to "trying to make something happen". Our offense was terrible in 2014 and in parts of the first half of 2015. The team was trying to force the issue of taking the extra base or stealing a base when they had no business doing so. We ranked in the middle of the pack in most baserunning stats. This year, speed can be a legitimate weapon for the Sox. To date, the Sox rank 1st in MLB in Spd at 6.3 (somewhat outdated stat, but still gives the overall impression), 1st in stolen base runs at 3.2, which goes along with being first in stolen base % at 91%, and 5th in baserunning runs at 2.4. Stolen bases are overrated, but speed and good baserunning are not.
  4. It is still too early to know exactly what we have in Porcello. Taking his 5 starts this season along with the last two months of last season, plus everything that was debated in his favor prior to last season, there is reason to be optimistic. Regardless of how it ends up, I will defend the contract extension until my fingers fall off, just like I will defend Buchholz' option being picked up. I know, I'm just a homer. And yet somehow, I still don't like Price's contract or the price we paid for Kimbrel, which is not to be mistaken with not liking Price or Kimbrel on our team.
  5. Good stuff overall Moon. Some of your opinions I agree with, others I disagree with. On the topic of batting order, we very much disagree. Batting orders, in general, are overrated. Unless a manager is willing to go completely against the grain of conventional thinking, batting orders make so little difference that it is better to put batters into a position where they feel comfortable, rather than placing them in positions where they traditionally fit. A manager will also be better off doing the right-left-right-left thing rather than trying to put batters in positions where they traditionally fit. The #3 hole is the least important spot out of the top 5. The line up should begin with the best hitters being placed in the 1, 2, and 4 spots, not the #3. This is not just my opinion. These are facts that are backed up by data. There are always going to be exceptions, but virtually every traditional belief about batting order is incorrect.
  6. It is limited in its use, but if used correctly, it is not at all terrible.
  7. Another solid post SK. Henry concerns me a bit. After the past 2 years of last place finishes and seeing ticket sales drop, Henry seems to be in win now at any cost mode. He has already wavered from some sound principles that have made him so successful. My concerns are not for this year, but for the long term outlook of the team. Nothing too damaging has been done yet, but I'm concerned about the possible path that this franchise is taking.
  8. It is great to see JBJ hitting so well. He's always been exciting to watch defensively. When he's hitting like he is right now, he's very exciting to watch offensively as well. Triples are more exciting to watch than HRs.
  9. Believe it or not, I can understand the fascination with women's breasts, and the rest of the female body. I am devoutly heterosexual myself, but I can appreciate the beauty and sexiness of other women. They are nice to look at. The gal in Slasher's avatar is very sexy. Not Chipper Jones sexy, but sexy. IMO, intelligence is an extremely sexy quality.
  10. Ortiz hugging those kids was awesome. That is something they will remember for the rest of their lives. I love to hear about players doing something for the kids or for the community in general. Warms my heart.
  11. Keep the good vibes going boys! Go Sox!
  12. And this means we will miss Sale in our series with them.
  13. The site name kind of guarantees that Jacko.
  14. The Yankees are dealing with the back ends of several contracts. Let this be a lesson to fans who want to sign every superstar free agent to these ridiculous contracts. They will be great for a while, but they will likely eventually come back to bite you. That said, it's still early. I don't ever count the Yankees out.
  15. Clay's peripherals are not looking good right now, but he gets a few more starts to try to right the ship before being placed on the DL with a phantom injury. As you mentioned, SSS and his history of bad Aprils are on his side, for now.
  16. At the game mojo from Hugh! The Sox got this!
  17. Papi promised a young fan that he would hit a HR for him last night. If you haven't seen this video, this is way cool. Especially the little boy's response. http://www.csnne.com/boston-red-sox/ortizs-winning-hr-fulfills-his-promise-young-fan
  18. Meh. I don't see what all the fuss is about.
  19. Ellsbury and the current state of the Yankees should serve as a constant reminder as to why signing superstar free agents to huge contracts is typically a bad idea.
  20. Young in and of himself is not a problem. Our bench, on the whole, may be.
  21. I'm not saying that in game managing is not important. I just feel that the managing that takes place off the field is more important. Valentine is a great example of how badly things can go if a manager does not know how to manage his players and the media. My biggest gripe with Farrell in the past has been his use, or rather his misuse, of the sac bunt. I've been tracking that this year and am happy to say that he has only called for one sac bunt so far this season. It was the correct call and the outcome was successful.
  22. Managing is most definitely a demanding job. Fair point, there are some situations where a manager's in game decision can be crucial. Knowing the players well is a big key to making the correct in game decisions.
  23. I concur with Bellhorn. Yaz is one of the nicest and most positive posters around. On the topic of Papi "getting bored", I think we would all love to see him play longer if he can keep this up. That said, I really want him to go out on his terms. The last thing I would want to see is for him to try to keep playing when he clearly no longer has it. Go out on top, Papi!
