  1. I think Vazquez stole that strike for Price. It wasn't close, but I'll take it too!
  2. That pretty much guarantees that Price will be on tonight.
  3. I don't know Emp, I still think the coaching staff should have noticed this. It's not like Price was just scuffling a little bit. His struggles have been very real and quite serious, considering he is supposed to be our ace. IMO, finding the flaw in his mechanics should have been Willis' top priority.
  4. I have no problem with anyone being down on the way he played last year. He was terrible. However, I did not like hearing accusations of him being lazy, apathetic, or a clubhouse cancer. Obviously his mental state is a lot better this year, but that doesn't mean that he had a poor attitude last year or that he wasn't trying. First base is a much better fit for him (I was thankfully very wrong about that), he is healthy, and the team is winning. That will improve anyone's mental state. It's not just Hanley, but all of these guys are having tons of fun out there. Great to see.
  5. I love Vazquez behind the plate, but right now, my gut says Pedroia. He looks like the Pedroia of old, not only defensively, but offensively as well.
  6. I'm betting on Price to be vintage Price tonight. It's always nice to start a series with a win. Get it done boys! Go Sox!
  7. For me, the catching position is all about defense and handling the pitching staff. Anything that a catcher provides offensively is gravy. Vazquez' light bat might be an issue if the rest of the line up were not so good, but obviously, that is not the case. This line up is good enough to hide a weak bat in the #9 (or 8) hole. I'm guessing most AL teams are getting similar production from their "weak link" in the line up.
  8. It's one of those fluky, fluky things. Lucky for the Yankees, it takes 550 plate appearances for ISO (isolated power or measure of extra base hits) to have any predictive value. Also, Headley's BABIP is almost 100 points below his career average. It's uncanny.

    The Cubs

Rob Bradford ‏@bradfo 11h11 hours ago Red Sox and Cubs lead majors with 196 runs, each. That's 392 total. By my count, Theo Epstein had hand in acquiring all but 49 of them.
  10. On this, we agree 100%. For the past couple of years, I have probably rooted harder for JBJ than for any other Sox player because of what I've read about his work ethic and his desire to succeed. If I'm not mistaken, he's been one of the first to report to ST camp the past couple of years. He is not one who is or who has taken anything for granted.
  11. This offense has been fun and exciting to watch. You never really get the sense that they are out of a game. The offense is due to regress, as others have pointed out, but even with that, regression from an .820 OPS is still going to be a very potent offense. If they regress to a .770 OPS, they'll still be one of the top 2 offenses in the AL. The main concern for this team is getting Price back on track.
  12. Sweep sounds good! Get it done boys! Go Sox!
  13. Seattle fan? Is this Hill? I am having a hard time recalling what the other trade was, so I'm guessing that it was not a trade in the Red Sox favor, which in turn leads me to guess that the player the Sox traded to the Mariners is the answer to your trivia question. I could look it up, but I won't cheat.
  14. Good on Pedroia, but I want to know why he is the one pointing these things out, and not the coaches, whose job it is to see these things. Based on the clips that were aired in last night's game, the difference in mechanics was pretty noticeable. Why did Willis not notice this several games ago?
  15. Keep the good vibes going! Go Sox!
  16. The Hardball Times uses (or used to use) a stat called GPA, Gross Production Average. It is similar to OPS, but weighs OBP more heavily than SLG, 1.8 times to be exact. The formula also divides the sum by 4 to put the value on a scale similar to BA, which makes it a little easier to understand in relative terms. And it's adjusted for park factors. GPA = (OBP*1.8 + SLG) / 4 That said, OPS has a strong correlation to runs scored, so it works reasonably well. That said, IMO, wOBA is a better stat.
  17. I think people tend to forget that Swihart just turned 24, which from what I understand, is very young in terms of a catcher's development. I remember hearing all the scouting reports not too long ago about how his defense would be good enough that, coupled with his offense, he would be the better overall catcher between him and Vazquez. I can't imagine that after one year, a year in which he was rushed up, all that has changed. IMO, Vazquez is so good defensively that Swihart gets an unfair comparison to him. Swihart just needs more time.
  18. Definitely a no brainer, regardless of how he ends up pitching this season.
  19. Awesome post. That is all.
  20. There are a couple of times Papi has said something where I really wish he would have kept it to himself, but you're absolutely right. He wears his emotions on his sleeve, and he is obviously very passionate about what he does. I love the emotion. I loved it with Youk too, although many people saw him as a whiner. As you said, that passion and fire is part of what makes him so great.
  21. Clay and the offense got this! Go Sox!

    The Cubs

The Cubs only have to play .500 ball the rest of the way out to finish with 90 wins.
  23. The thing is that eating disorders are often the result of depression or anxiety, which you can't control. Also, I am not trying to absolve Pablo of any responsibility. That was never my intention. My defense of Pablo has been for 2 points: 1. He should have been given a chance to start this season. 2. Just because he came to camp fat does not mean he is lazy, selfish, doesn't care, etc.
  24. Speaking of Kelly, Dombrowski said that there are currently no plans to put Kelly in the pen.
  25. One of the reasons the FO was willing to give Price such a large contract at his age is because their reports, both scouting and statistical, told them that: 1. He would age well, meaning he would not have a big drop in velocity any time soon. 2. He has the control to reinvent himself quite effectively when that loss of velocity does occur. If his velocity loss is indeed due to aging, I have confidence that Price will reinvent himself just fine. That said, I agree completely that this was not something we expected from day one of the contract. At any rate, too early to draw any definitive conclusions.
