    The Cubs

Pythagoras, like Bill James, was a man ahead of his time.
  2. Except that ERod was only supposed to be 'down' for a few days.
  3. We have, but the degree of our enigmatic pitching (and offense) really is inexplicable.
  4. I don't disagree with any of this. It was really nice to see Vazquez get a couple of big hits last night. By all accounts, he has been working very hard on his hitting and it paid off last night.
  5. I agree, the team should focus on pitching. That said, Moon is on point in thinking that perhaps we can acquire good pitching for fewer prospects if we are willing to take on a bad contract. Also, if pitching proves to be too expensive, then I hope the FO would upgrade the offense in whatever way they can, provided the price is right. Upgrading the offense should be less expensive than upgrading the pitching.
  6. Personally, I didn't even like seeing Clemens in the booth.
  7. Have to agree with Slash and S5 on this one. He's not the type of character guy we need, and I don't want the Sox acquiring any known steroids users.
  8. Happy Father's Day to all the fine dads here at Talksox! Have a wonderful, relaxing day and enjoy a great Sox win!
  9. 'Summer Vacation' mojo in full force! It will not be beaten! Go Sox! Mariners vs Red Sox 1:30 pm @ Fenway Walker 3-6/3.69 The 23-year-old was pulled from his last start after 3 1/3 innings with tendinitis in the arch of his right foot, but he threw on Thursday without problem and is expected to go. This will be his first time facing the Red Sox. Price 7-4/4.52 The lefty ace has lost his last three starts, despite pitching well each time out and posting a 2.74 ERA over that span. Price is 2-1 with a 2.48 ERA in five career starts against the Mariners.
  10. He got himself into jams, but he was able to work his way out of them. The 3rd inning when he had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs but escaped without giving up any runs was huge. He settled in very nicely after that.
  11. Shaw and Hanley seem to be breaking out of it, while Pedroia seems to be in a bit of a funk.

    The Cubs

The scary part is, the Cubs are 5 games worse than their Pythagorean W-L. They should be 50-15. They are 2-2 in extra inning games and 8-9 in one inning games. As you said, their record isn't smoke and mirrors.
  13. It's time to put the 'Summer Vacation' mojo to work. This is some pretty powerful stuff and it will not be beaten. Go Sox! Mariners @ Red Sox 4pm @ Fenway Sampson (Big League debut) 24 year old right hander expected to be added to the roster today to replace the injured Wade Miley. Acquired from the Pirates last July for JA Happ, was 7-4/ 3.25 in 13 starts for Tacoma. Porcello 7-2/ 3.81 Gave up 4 runs (1 earned) over 7 innings in a loss to the Twins in his last start. He is perfect at Fenway this season going 5-0/ 3.03.
  14. I have confidence in Vazquez to regain his elite defensive level. Because of that, I still think Swihart is worth more to some other team in trade value than he is to us. If he could be part of a package to bring back a #2 type pitcher, I'd do it in a heartbeat, and I love Swihart. Kory's article suggested trading for Lucroy. Depending on the price, I don't think that's a bad idea. That said, upgrading the catching position is not a top priority IMO.
  15. To be fair, the rotation has a pretty good #1, 2, and 3. Even though Wright might not fit the typical ace profile, he has pitched like an ace all season. Price and Porcello are very solid at #2 and #3. If Price keeps pitching like he has since Pedroia fixed him, we arguably have two aces. Where we are lacking is in the #4 and #5 spots. Out of Buchholz, Kelly, ERod, Elias, Owens, Johnson, and I know I'm missing someone, you would think that 2 of them, or at least one of them, could pitch consistently enough to be a solid back end rotation guy. Especially with the way that Buchholz and ERod pitched last season and the way Kelly finished the season. It is really a bit of an enigma that not one of those guys have been able to step it up.
  16. I'm pretty sure that we're the only ones on the planet who feel this way, but I'm kind of excited about Clay's return to the rotation.
  17. I am not saying that Bogaerts is going to end up with a 10.3 WAR based on his pace so far. It's highly unlikely that any player or any team will maintain the same pace throughout the season or even throughout a month. However, it's a bit of a stretch to say that pace doesn't mean anything. Pace tells you where the player stands at this point of the season, and it gives you a good idea of where the player should be at the end of the season, with regression. Remember that regression doesn't mean that if a player was 10 HRs above his average the first half, that he'll be 10 HRs below average the second half. It means that during the second half, the player will likely hit closer to his typical number of HRs, still keeping him above his average for the year. Xander's current WAR pace tells me that he is likely to eclipse Nomar's best season WAR.
  18. The losing, especially to the Os, is really ticking me off. Seriously, enough already.
  19. Matthew Kory wrote a not so flattering article about Vazquez yesterday, but he made a valid point. Vazquez' weak bat could be tolerated if he is the elite defender that he's been touted to be. So far this season, Vazquez has been good defensively, but certainly not elite. Being merely good defensively is not going to be enough to cover the weak bat. He has to regain that elite level. That said, I think we will see an improvement from him on both sides of the ball. Pitch framing skills don't just disappear. As far as the CS% and the offense are concerned, we have to remember that he sat out an entire year. Give it some time.
  20. Most of the time, you are hilarious. This is not one of those times.
  21. I am not trying to say that Xander will be better than Nomar over his career. He may be, he may not be. Nomar was very good, but so is Xander. It's too soon to know. The question in the opening post was whether Xander this year will eclipse Nomar's best year. IMO, 'pace' is very relevant to that question. Now there's still a long way to go in this season and many things can happen between now and October, but through nearly 40% of the season, Xander is on pace to beat Nomar's best season.
  22. I'm sure you all are right and this really is a non issue. At any rate, Groome deserves the benefit of the doubt. It sounds like the Sox will be able to get him signed.
  23. Time to quit messing around and put together a nice win streak. Let's go!
  24. How many times are you going to post this?
  25. I have no problem with Vazquez' offense, or lack thereof. We can hide him in the 9 hole easily enough if the rest of the team continues to hit. I think he is more valuable to the pitching staff than some people give him credit for.
