  1. ^^This. The Return of Clay, indeed.
  2. What? As MVP already posted, if the Sox go .500 the rest of the season, they will finish with 86 wins. So you think they will play less than .500 ball the rest of the way out? In order to finish at 81-81, they need to win .452 the remainder of the season.
  3. Pythagorean W-L deserves a lot of respect. It does a better job of predicting what a team's record will be for the remainder of the season than the actual W-L record does.
  4. Being the best player does not necessarily mean being the most valuable player. This is something that is often overlooked with MVP voting.
  5. This is a very good point. 'Most Valuable' should be the player whose absence would hurt the team the most.
  6. This should put the Papi "unretiring" ideas to rest. "Big Papi" arrives at the stadium before any other player to start the long process of preparing for a game, particularly when it comes to his feet. He says he feels so much pain in his feet every day, they are the main reason he guarantees he will never change his mind and come back for another season. "Everything hurts," he said. "It even hurts to think. Last time I reached second after a double, I almost called for a timeout so they would get me out of the game. I can barely run because my feet hurt so much. I am in severe pain. Apparently he is in far more pain than most of us realized.
  7. I think it's psychological. He and the team insist that it isn't physical. I believe that he has altered his mechanics due to fear of putting full pressure on that knee. He's been unnerved, as you said. On top of that, he is tipping pitches again.
  8. He is tipping pitches, but his struggles go beyond that. Here is what Merloni had to say about it: As Merloni noted, when Rodriguez starts to lift his hands, if the hitter can see the thumb of his glove, Rodriguez is throwing a fastball or something hard. If the glove remains flat, it's a changeup. After he pointed it during Thursday's game, even my untrained eye could call about three-quarters of Rodriguez's pitches.
  9. I did not. Not that I have anything against Holt. IMO, Holt's value to the team is in the super utility role. Taking him out of that role, along with taking Shaw out of a bench role, really hurt the team's bench depth, which should have been a team strength.
  10. I don't think it's a lack of confidence in Ross, but rather a 'plan' that Farrell doesn't want to deviate from. When they are available, Tazawa, Koji, and Kimbrel are getting the 7th, 8th, and 9th in a save situation.
  11. You and Jacko called it right. In recent years, I have been very wary of any medical reports that I read. The injuries tend to have a way of going from being a few days to being months long. At any rate, I am hopeful that ERod will get back to the pitcher that he was last season, and more. Tipping pitches seems to be an issue with him, but one that should be fixable.
  12. It's such a difficult decision, and a good dilemma to have. If I had to choose one, I'd go with Papi, but I can't really argue with other choices.
  13. That's a fair point, but you never know. It's not likely, but he might have had more success at the big league level. I just think he should have been given more time.
  14. I have been tracking the team's use of the sac bunt this season. To date, the team has attempted 9 sac bunts, some successful, others not. I am happy to report that Farrell has done a pretty good job so far in terms of using the sac bunt. The bunt attempts that were absolutely the wrong call were ones that the players did on their own. I think Farrell and his coaching staff 'get it' when it comes to sacrificing.
  15. I have no problem with Mookie trying to steal there. It's never good when they get caught, but the team's success rate has been very good. Hanley getting picked off was really a bonehead move. I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that he leads the league in outs made on the basepaths by 4 or 5. Not good.
  16. I know most people disagree with me, but I never felt like he really got a fair shot to play with the team. I thought he should have been our starting left fielder to start the season. This move looks like it's going to be a real bust. Unlike the Pablo signing, this one is on Ben, IMO.
  17. 'Summer Vacation' mojo for the win! It will not be beaten! Go RED Sox! Pale Hose @ Red Sox Monday....7pm....Fenway Gonzalez 1-2/ 4.74 After posting his best start as a member of the White Sox 2 starts ago vs the Nationals, Gonzalez's last trip to the mound lasted just 3 1/3 innings vs the Tigers. He allowed 7 runs on eight hits while walking 4. Wright 8-4/ 2.22 Brings a five game winning streak into Monday's matchup vs the Pale Hose who beat him on May 3rd. He allowed 2 runs on three hits while walking 4 in that outing.
  18. What a pitching performance by both Price and Kimbrel. I am so glad that those missed chances and baserunning blunder did not come back to haunt us. Great win!
  19. We face him in this upcoming series, the 4th game I believe. Watch, he'll pick that game to decide to pitch like an ace again. LOL
  20. I'm not a basketball fan at all, and, therefore, am not invested in any way either for or against either team. I saw the highlights of the game and clips of the deflated Warriors and the jubilant Cavs. I teared up for both teams. Good stuff. Almost makes me want to become a fan again.

  22. I agree to a certain extent on pulling the trigger if you feel like you have a shot. But within reason. I don't think you mortgage your entire future trying to win now when the winning now is not guaranteed. In other words, I do not subscribe to the "Win now at any cost" philosophy.
  23. I am not in agreement with that particular trade idea for a couple of reasons. However, the idea of taking on a bad contract in order to save on prospects is a valid one.
  24. There were plenty of articles and statements made that initially indicated this injury was nothing serious: From NESN - “It was a scare because I feel like I broke my knee,” Rodriguez said, via WEEI.com. “It’€™s fine now. It was a scare like that but I’€™m going to be fine.” “Going through the training room assessment, unable to reproduce any kind of discomfort." From Boston.com - "He was initially expected to miss a few days, as he had no damage to the ligaments or cartilage in his knee," "The timeline for Eduardo Rodriguez’s knee injury only seems to get longer." From RedSox.com - "Knee injury to sideline E-Rod a few days" "The Red Sox are hopeful that the injury is nothing more than a brief annoyance."
