  1. I don't know if there's an ideal spot, but based on what I've read, I think an optimal lineup would be: 1. Xander 2. JBJ 3. Mookie 4. Ortiz 5. Pedroia 6. Hanley 7. Leon (He is a wildcard right now based on his outrageous numbers in a small sample.) 8. Shaw 9. Holt That said, I am not one for changing the line up around because it just doesn't make that big of a difference. Also, our top 6 are all pretty good, and could be interchanged without much damage, comfort level aside.
  2. That's an oxymoron, isn't it? All other things being equal, a high OBP guy with speed would be better than a high OBP guy without speed, no doubt. However, speed is not a must for a leadoff hitter.
  3. LOL Yeah, we've been down this road before, many times. Not to disrespect Ortiz in any way, but as heroic as he has been, he has failed to come through in many clutch situations also. Ortiz is not clutch. He is just a good hitter, period.
  4. If we can return from this west coast trip winning 6 of 11, I will be okay.
  5. No point. I was actually agreeing with you, though I guess it didn't come across that way.
  6. I'd love to have him on the team, but it depends on what kind of deal he's looking for. Last I heard he was looking for at least four years. That's crazy talk for a 33 year old player, IMO.
  7. No, the rumors and speculation do not die. This is what drives me crazy. I was better off before Twitter, when I didn't hear about a move until after it was done.
  8. I agree. I was on the fence about him coming into the season. I'm still more or less on the fence, though I haven't seen anything glaring about him in terms of bad in game moves.
  9. I will be so glad when this deadline passes. I hate this time of the year.
  10. If Dombrowski does not pick up another pitcher, starter or reliever, then we need Buchholz. Our rotation depth is very thin, and there are inning concerns with both Wright and Pomeranz. Maybe Buchholz has found his niche in the BP? He deserves a lot of credit for the job he did last night.
  11. I have no proof of whether veteran leadership is important or not. It is intangible. I believe that it is important, just like I believe that 'grit' is important, though I have no proof of that either. Unless I see evidence to the contrary, I'm going to continue to believe it. I have seen very strong evidence telling me that 'clutch' does not exist.
  12. I do know that having veteran or experience players on the team does not correlate strongly with postseason success. Clutch has been broken down and studied in just about every way imaginable. It has been shown not to be a repeatable skill.
  13. From the article: "There's probably someone who read that nothing was significant and thought "Ha! Another myth bites the dust!" Not so fast. This is a mistake that I see a lot in sabermetrics and have probably made myself. There probably are cases in which an older player takes a younger player under his wing. It's hard to believe that he would do so for everyone on the team (or that everyone would need it). Also, it's probably not the case that all older players are good at that sort of thing. But it's harder to believe that it never happens, that there aren't certain guys who are good at it, and that somewhere along the line, someone benefited from that sort of mentorship. Maybe we don't know fully how to identify the good ones, but it's a bigger stretch of the imagination to deny that this effect is out there."
  14. Yet there was plenty of talk about how Farrell gets a lot of credit for this win because: 1. He kept Pedroia from getting tossed. 2. He fired up the team by getting himself tossed. I'm not a Farrell/Lovullo basher, but I, too, have to question the decision not to pinch hit for Hanigan.
  15. Give me some proof that veteran leadership does not positively impact a team, and I will rethink my opinion on it. I have seen enough evidence for me to believe that 'clutch' does not exist. Again, give me some evidence that it does, and I will rethink my position on it. And by evidence, I don't mean anecdotal evidence.
  16. We kept him for several reasons: 1. Depth 2. Veteran leadership. Yes, that intangible is important. 3. Who really knew or still knows how long Leon can keep up this hitting? 4. If Vazquez is not going to be the starting catcher, he is better off being in Pawtucket where he can play everyday.
  17. Cashman has made a good haul with the trades of Chapman and Miller. I don't like it, but you have to give him credit.
  18. I respectfully disagree. What you do when you're selling at the deadline depends on what your short and long term goals are. That deal has turned out to be awful, but it really should not have been that bad.
  19. Hola Redrojo! Welcome!
  20. Some of them are definitely worse than others. I read a suggestion about only using the best umps at calling balls/strikes behind the plate, rather than rotating them every game. Umps that have inconsistent strike zones can man one of the other positions. That would appease the union because no one would lose their job. I thought that was a good suggestion.
  21. Well, you do have to take other things into consideration. As I said, because of his power, batting 4th is the better spot for him. The point is, the idea that your lead off hitter needs to have speed is false. He needs to have a high OBP. Rickey Henderson was not a great lead off hitter because he stole bases. He was a great lead off hitter because he got on base.
  22. I would never count them out with 2 months left to play. They are 4.5 games behind us. I've seen teams make up that margin in 2-3 weeks.
  23. Let's hope the offense comes to play today too. 9:00 start time - a little better than 10:00.
  24. That is actually not the craziest of ideas. Batting Papi 4th makes more sense because he also has the high SLG %, but batting him leadoff would make a lot more sense then putting a speedy guy who can't get on base in that slot. The problem with the 'optimal' line ups is that they so strongly buck conventional thinking that no one is going to do it. Can you imagine the outrage if Farrell put Papi in the lead off spot? That said, we are starting to see some hints of it, particularly with batters we are seeing in the #2 spot.
