  1. One of the reasons why Pedroia is one of the worst base runners in baseball is because he hits into so many double plays. The inability to avoid a DP on a ground ball counts against him as a base runner. That said, he also ranks negatively in the other components of base running. As someone else mentioned, I really do think that Pedroia's grit and scrappiness give us a false impression of his base running ability.
  2. Nice observations Slash. I'm glad you had a good time.
  3. According to ESPN homerun tracker, the first HR was 103.6, the 2nd was 94.0, and the 3rd was 103.7.
  4. Nice at the game mojo by both you and Slasher. I'm glad you all had an enjoyable game to watch. To be honest, I was getting a little bored by the game. That said, after all the tense games we've played recently, boring was a welcome change.
  5. The rainout in Cleveland to start the season is really coming back to haunt us. We could have really used the off day, not to mention the reduced travel if we didn't have to go to Cleveland for one game. Thank goodness we finished off the homestand so strong. Hopefully the momentum and the hot bats carry into the road trip.
  6. I really don't get all the criticism of the move of having Wright run for Papi. The fact that Wright got hurt is a fluke, not to be blamed on Farrell. Papi cannot run. He is in serious pain. Even if Wright was not much faster than Papi, Papi needed to be taken out to help preserve him for the remainder of the season. The decision to take Papi out was the right one. As far as using someone else besides Wright, the options were very limited. The remaining position players or any of the relievers would have been poor choices. That leaves one of the starters. It's a coin toss, really, as to which starter to use.
  7. I have no problem giving a pitcher the MVP if he is deserving. In my opinion, the MVP isn't necessarily the best player on a team. It's the player that the team could least afford to lose. In contrast, the Cy should go to the best pitcher. I think there's a difference. Perhaps it would be fitting to have a comparable award for position players - the best overall position player from each league.
  8. fWAR also has Kris Bryant and Corey Seager listed among the top 5. All of the top MVP candidates are on playoff contending teams, except for Trout. That leads to the age old debate about whether a player like Trout, whose team isn't a playoff contender, can be an MVP. I say yes, but I could certainly see the other side of the argument. After all, if the Angels didn't have Trout, would it really matter?
  9. I will question a manager's decision, but I agree, there is usually a pretty good rationale behind their decisions. They also have information in making their decisions that we are not privy to. I try to give the manager the benefit of the doubt. The bottom line is that the decision a manager makes matters little in most cases. It comes down to the players being able to execute.
  10. Another reason for letting Price pitch the 8th and saving the pen arms - Buchholz was pitching the following day. He was limited to about 65 pitches, at best, and there was a very real possibility that he would have to be pulled before then. Yesterday's game looked to be a bullpen game. We needed as many arms available as possible.
  11. I don't know how he fits either. Perhaps he gets traded. I just know that if he doesn't rebound, he's a sunk cost. If he can rebound, he provides some depth and flexibility.
  12. I usually agree with you, but I take exception to this statement.
  13. Great job Ben?
  14. Thank you. I can admit when I'm wrong, which unfortunately for me, is far too often. LOL
  15. As with yesterday's game, I don't care how you do it, just win. Win, win, win!
  16. I never liked his contract to begin with, and thought there were better options. That said, I can understand why the FO signed him, and contrary to popular belief, it wasn't because of his postseason numbers. At least not from Ben's point of view. But since he is here and under contract for 3 more years, it is in the team's best interest if he can rebound to 2014 numbers.
  17. No, I don't really like that color gray. However, I don't find the gray in their unis to be overwhelming. It's also not that I'm in love with the uniforms, I just don't think they're as bad as Eck was making them out to be. I've seen worse.
  18. I realize that. I know he has a long way to go before he has proven himself or redeemed himself in the eyes of the fans. I am hoping that he has enough pride that the embarrassment of losing his job this season will motivate him enough to get himself together. I know most people want him gone, but I'm pulling for him.
  19. We are playing 43 games in 44 days, many of which are road games, at a time when the players are already beat up and worn down from the grueling season. They need some days off. Again, we are not quite at the "sprint" stage of the season. Farrell still needs to manage for now and later on.
  20. On the topic of Benintendi, I was not supportive of calling him up before September unless our situation became dire. So far, calling him up looks like the right move. If he continues playing well, good call by the FO.
  21. Yup, and to think that we got him for peanuts.
  22. I've always thought that Clay should be told that he's not allowed to shake off the catcher and that he's not allowed to throw over to first base unless told to do so. In other words, no thinking for Clay on the mound. IMO, he's way overthinking things, which is never a good thing. Let the catcher and the dugout do the thinking, and let Clay just pitch.
  23. After the 2nd walk, there was a lefty coming to the plate. Farrell did not want Ziegler coming in to face a lefty.
  24. Clay was not great, but his job was to get through about 5 innings and keep his team in the game. He accomplished that.
  25. LOL The unreasonable lynch mob can be found in the game threads on almost a nightly basis.
