  1. With the acquisition of Sale, I think there's a very good chance of Buchholz being traded before Opening Day.
  2. The thing is, if you don't empty the coffers, then that window of opportunity never really closes.
  3. Not confusing at all. Happy for the short term, mourning for the long term.
  4. Having Tito and Theo back would make me happier. But good for Farrell.
  5. Everyone's favorite projection system, Fangraphs, has us as early best record AL favorites, just one game behind the Cubs. Brilliant short term moves. I am wearing black along with my Sox Prospects brethren.
  6. I guess I am the only one who is not all warm and fuzzy about this deal. Dombrowski is taking the Sox down the same crappy farm system path that he took the Tigers down. Yes, our team got better for the short term. It got a lot worse for the long term. I just can't agree with the 'win now' philosophy. That said, welcome aboard Sale. I am happy (I think) to have you on my team.
  7. None of Dombrowski's moves would have been possible if not for Cherington. Thank you Ben.
  8. I suggested this last season and I still like the idea. I've mentioned my concerns about ERod pitching in the WBC. Maybe some time in Pawtuckett will help him out on that front, in addition to giving us solid depth. That said, I'm guessing Buchholz will be traded.
  9. As Yankees fans go, Jacko is all right. He can't help it when he slips into that Yankee mode.
  10. I have always thought that Cashman was a good GM, and that he could do a much better job if some of the higher ups stopped butting in.
  11. Personally, I think the present and the future of this team look pretty good, and by 'future', I mean beyond a 2-3 year window. If Dombrowski makes the right moves and does not rape the farm system, we should be contenders for the foreseeable future. And we should be able to reset the tax in the process. I am getting a sense of urgency from some posters that I'm just not seeing.
  12. I would start by re-signing Koji. Even though his innings would have to be carefully managed, we know that he can handle the 8th inning. Maybe he could hold down the fort until Smith is ready. Relievers are up and down. Once upon a time, Miller was not very good. Now he's lights out. Perhaps Barnes or Kelly or someone else will step it up.
  13. I've always liked Napoli. His strike outs never bothered me. I would take him back, but I think Alvarez, being a lefty, would be a better fit.
  14. These contracts are spiraling out of control. I just read about the possibility of Harper getting $400 million. Where is it going to end? I don't like it one bit.
  15. The point was made again today by someone in the FO about their desire to stay under the cap this year. Passing on Beltran, whom they reportedly really wanted, seems to support that notion. I would not be averse to signing Alvarez. It looks like a less expensive DH bat, and maybe one FA reliever and another through trade? Although I keep hearing rumblings about Sale.
  16. Being a one year deal, this does make a lot more sense than Encarnacion would, in terms of the long term plan.
  17. I have never said that the pen is not important. It's just my belief that you don't have to spend big on a bullpen to build a good one. We already have a perfectly capable closer. We need a solid 8th inning guy and maybe one other reliever, or we can just sign an 8th inning guy and go with what we have.
  18. Yup, those depth moves are important too. Making it to the playoffs often comes down to those depth guys.
  19. Agreed. I don't really see much of a correlation there.
  20. I think any of us would love to have Encarnacion or Sale on our team. However, I am not willing to pay the current asking price for either player.
  21. As a team, our 3B ranked 29th out of 30 teams in fWAR, providing only 0.8 WAR. I don't think it would take much a miracle for one of our options to improve upon that. Remember how awful the #4 and 5 spots in our rotation were for a while? Having Pomeranz for a full year and a hopefully healthy ERod should help to stabilize the back end of our rotation.
  22. OTOH, those 4 of the top 6 teams also have strong defensive catchers. I would guess that there would be a stronger correlation between teams with strong defensive catchers and teams making the postseason than between teams with better hitting catchers and teams making the postseason.
  23. Having your rotation set up and your players rested and healthy is more of an advantage than having home field. HFA does exist, but it's not worth going all out for at the expense of other things.
