  1. The Sox were a 98 win team according to Pythagoras. Assuming everything else remained the same, for argument's sake, the loss of Papi would make us approximately a 93 win team. I'm expecting some upgrades to the pen. I'm also expecting that Dombrowski will do something on the offensive front, though I don't think it will be a big move. Some players will improve, others will regress. Our offseason needs are not nearly as dire as some people are making them out to be. IMO, we could start the season with the team we currently have and we would be a legitimate contender. I am not suggesting that we stand pat, but I think we would be good to go if we did.
  2. Of course pulling a bat like Papi's out of the lineup is going to have a negative impact. He is hopefully not going to be replaced by nothing, though. The point being that our offense will likely not be as strong as it was in 2016, but it was so good in 2016 that even with the loss of Papi's bat, it should still be one of the top offenses in the league. They could still even be the best offense in the league without making any offensive changes.
  3. I'd definitely take a flyer on Ross. I don't know much about Johnson, but I'm not impressed with numbers, specifically his ERA 'predictors'.
  4. I agree.
  5. I would go with the Buchholz option over the Beltran one. Even though Beltran should play every day, how much of an upgrade will he provide over the offense we already have? I am not concerned about our offense for 2017. Sure, if we can improve our offense that would be great, but not if if comes at the expense of our pitching. IMO, we need the starting pitching depth more than we need Beltran.
  6. That is true enough, but at least we should have a better idea of what Pablo can give us and whether Moncada will be ready and able to handle 3B by then. Right now there are a ton of question marks at that position.
  7. We should definitely keep him. We need him.
  8. I read something from Hanley that he likes the idea of a rotating DH and that he thinks he, as well as others, would benefit from it.
  9. Not quite what the 'experts here at Talksox' said, but yes, it's true!
  10. Who says we won't have a top offense next year?
  11. I very much agree with this. It's really difficult to know how much of a need we have at 3B right now. Waiting until midseason makes a lot of sense.
  12. For that matter, it exists all season long.
  13. Do not like that idea. I'd rather go with best record.
  14. LOL I actually kind of enjoy watching the All Star Game. It's an exhibition. It's supposed to be fun, nothing more. I like the celebrity softball game too.
  15. If they're really concerned about making it fair, the stat geeks could easily come up with a point system of some sort that would factor in strength of schedule. It would not be that difficult to do. That said, while best record might not be completely fair in determining HFA, it makes a heck of a lot more sense than letting the outcome of the All Star game determine it. Personally, I have no problem with using best record.
  16. Welcome. Good to see you.
  17. That might be all we need.
  18. Agreed.
  19. Not that home field advantage means that much, but thank goodness some people finally came to their senses. Having the World Series HFA determined by the All Star game was ridiculous.
  20. Which is what I thought the Yankees were trying to do - reset their penalty. Signing Encarnacion wouldn't make much sense.
  21. Me too. I don't want the Sox to sign him because of the size of the contract that he'll likely get. That being the case, I'd much prefer that he sign with the Astros rather than an AL East team, especially the Yankees.
  22. I have heard rumors that the Astros are close to signing him. I don't know how reliable those sources are though. If they're true, we should hear something today or tomorrow.
  23. I wholeheartedly agree with you. At least I agree that it shouldn't be done. I hope the Sox are smart enough not to do it.
  24. Of course Leon's offense last season was BABIP fueled and unsustainable. That said, I think it's possible that even with regression, Leon can be an average offensive catcher. He won't have an OPS of .850, but he should well improved from the .450 OPS that he had the previous seasons.
  25. Swihart would have more value as a catcher than as a left fielder. I think the Sox need to figure out whether he can improve enough defensively not to be a liability behind the plate. To do that, he needs to be catching everyday.
