  1. Price was outstanding and came up huge when the team really needed it. That's what an ace does. I know it's only one game, but I was on him a lot last year for not being able to do that. He deserves the praise and the credit. Great job!
  2. Tough crowd indeed. Perhaps it is time for Beni to get a hair cut.
  3. There is very likely more subjectivity in a 'strikeout' or a 'walk' than there is in UZR.
  4. The idea that a stat having 'too many moving parts' means that it can't be a good stat doesn't make any sense to me. The goal is to try to get as comprehensive an assessment of a player as possible. A simple stat like 'Errors' is not going to do that. Some simple stats like Errors and Wins are way more flawed than UZR or WAR, IMO.
  5. WAR does a very good job as a descriptive stat. Players WARs correlate very well to the team's wins. If I have to choose one stat to tell me how good/bad a player has played, or how much a player has contributed to his team, I'm going with WAR. WAR does not work as well as a predictive stat, but it works better than most others.
  6. You guys are killing me.
  7. The Sox were tied for second in runs scored during the month of May, behind only the red hot Astros. If the team can stay healthy, I don't see any reason why they can't continue being one of the top run scoring teams.
  8. Good point. Through April and May last year, the team scored 308 runs. This year, they've scored 252 runs through April and May. Through April and May last year, the pitching staff allowed 228 runs. This year, they've allowed 218 runs through April and May. That is slightly better, but it's not the improvement that I think we would expect with the addition of Sale. That said, the drop off in runs scored is also more than I would have expected.
  9. I know many think we need a big bat to replace Ortiz, but I still disagree with that. IMO, we just need the guys that we have to stay healthy and hit like they are capable of hitting. Beni is in a terrible slump, as we all know. Hanley as well. Pedroia being on the DL is not helping. The player that seems to have gotten a pass is Mookie. Over the past two weeks, his slash line is .175/.277/.333/.610. The slump actually goes back a little farther than 2 weeks.
  10. New win streak starts tonight! You heard it here first!
  11. The bottom line with WAR is that it works. It's not perfect, which is the case with any stat, but it's a very good stat and it works, warts and all.
  12. It seems that his knee problems are something that could be a recurring issue throughout his career. Not what we needed when it looked like ERod was starting to put it together. Looks like Johnson will get the call the next time we need 5th pitcher.
  13. Thank you. I have my tantrum throwing moments, but I try not to post during them. LOL
  14. Thank you. Not only that, but as much as I appreciate what Marrero and Rutledge have done for the team, they are not the answer to our 3B problem. Then, heaven forbid, what happens if one of them sustains an injury that will keep him out for a long time? It behooves the Red Sox to give Pablo a fair chance at 3B to see what he can contribute to the team. It is in the team's best interest if Pablo can play well. It's easy to say that we should just eat the money because Pablo is a sunk cost anyway, but that is easier said than done. We don't know for sure that he is a sunk cost.
  15. Can't stand the Os. We seriously need to shut Thorne up. WIN!!!
  16. On the topic of why the Sox hit into so many double plays, Matthew Kory had a good article on that today. In short, high OBP, low Ks (high contact), and low HRs equals a lot of double plays.
  17. Momentum exists, but only in terms of describing what has already happened. It has no predictive quality, be it in a month, a series, a game, or even an inning. Saying something like Team A is favored to win the series because they have all the momentum would be a fallacy.
  18. Park factors are taken into account.
  19. Jackie has raised his OPS just over 200 points in a little over 2 weeks.
  20. But UZR really isn't an 'eye test'. It is calculated in a much more objective way. There is some subjectivity involved, but the bias and subjectivity are eliminated as much as possible. There is certainly a lot less subjectivity and bias in UZR than there is in someone's eye test.
  21. JBay is definitely the Game Thread King. I, OTOH, basically need to stay out of the game threads.
  22. Very nice start by Pomeranz last night, BTW. His last 2 starts have been very encouraging.
  23. Oh, but you know you want to go over the cliff with us. For the record, I have supported the Pom trade all along, except for the questionable medical reports and Dombrowski not backing out of the trade when he had the chance if there is indeed something seriously wrong with Pom. But in terms of the actual trade, I didn't like the what we gave up, but felt like it was a trade that needed to be done.
