  1. I have never been one who has advocated for managers to get paid the big bucks, so I'm not sure what your point is. That said, managers do serve a purpose and are needed. All I said was that their in game decisions do not have as big an impact on the game as most people believe they do.
  2. If Bogaerts keeps hitting like he's been hitting, I'm okay with the lack of home runs.
  3. My one remaining gang member....
  4. Most decisions differ in win expectancy over another decision by .01 or .02.
  5. To quote my man MGL, "It takes around 50 to 200 bad manager decisions (bullpen, pinch hitter, IBB, bunt, etc.) before he costs his team ONE win."
  6. A manager's most important job is managing the clubhouse, as I've said before.
  7. In 33 years of baseball studied, only 6 teams have improved their win expectancy in any one season by employing sacrifices, stolen base attempts, and intentional walks. In other words, a manager should mostly just let the players play.
  8. That's the bottom line. For the most part, if a manager has good players, he will win games. If he doesn't, he won't. You made another good point in another post. Sometimes a manager makes the absolute right decision and it doesn't work out, or vice versa.
  9. Don and Jerry were the best.
  10. Not only that, but Kimbrel hadn't pitched in forever. He needs some work.
  11. I was reading an article that made a very good point that managerial impact is very similar to clutch hitting. It is not a repeatable skill. Five areas of managerial impact were looked at: 1. In game strategies like IBBs, bunts, stolen bases 2. Team wins and losses relative to run differential or expected wins and losses 3. Playing time distribution 4. In game substitutions, including relief pitchers 5. Coaching of players There was no evidence of repeatable skill in any of those areas. In other words, individual performances of managers varied so much in each category that their results are likely due more to - wait for it........ - randomness, than anything else.
  12. Makes sense if he's physically ready. He'll be on somewhat of a pitch count, but he's still a better option than the others.
  13. I agree. Price hasn't looked that great in his rehab starts, but I'll take my chances with him over the guys we've been starting in his spot.
  14. And we scored all those runs with hitting only one home run.
  15. The Sox lead the league in runs scored in the month of May, and are 2nd to only the Rockies in all of baseball. They are scoring 5.8 runs per game this month. This month is a small sample, just as the month of April was, but I expect them to be closer to their May numbers going forward than they are to their April numbers.
  16. As I've said before, I think people forget just how bad Shaw was after May of last year. The way he was playing, he was not going to be our answer at 3B. That said, I still think one of Dombrowski's big errors in terms of this year was not having a viable back up plan for 3B.
  17. As far as in game decisions go, managers do not have as big an effect as most people think they do. I've always felt that the most important aspect of a manager's job is the management of the players and the clubhouse. IMO, the team's record fall mostly on the players, not Farrell and not Dombrowski. Having said that, when a team underperforms like this one has, and I'm thinking mostly about the sloppy defense, it's fair to question what's going on with the coaching staff.
  18. It's time to go on a good run. Enough of this win one, lose one crap. Get your heads out of your butts and play like you are capable of playing. Let's Go!
  19. Oddly enough, these two trades are two Dombrowski trades that I was okay with.
  20. You seriously need to post more often sk. Thank you for this post.
  21. It has been frustrating, but it's better than us losing and the Yankees winning.
  22. Nice. I really like the Houston team. If the Sox get eliminated, they might be the team I root for.
  23. It was a lot of fun, though I was rooting for the Jays. It was a long day with the trip up there and back, but though traffic was heavy for pretty much the whole trip up, it was moving most of the time. I think we only hit 3 spots where it was stop and go, which is pretty good! Fun day at the ballpark with the kids. You can't beat that.
  24. I agree about OPS and you are probably right that most high scoring teams have a good slugging % as well as a good OBP. I'm too lazy to look at the moment, but as I said, I'm guessing that you are right about that. IMO, we should still be scoring more runs than we have been because of our good OBP. Either way, the main point is that we are getting runners on base, which is a good sign. If we keep getting runners on base, the runs will score.
  25. Of course, but I think he could have done a lot better without the overbearing influence of Lucchino. Anyway, the point of that post was that not being able to convince your boss to change his mind is not a sign of a poor GM.
