  1. I am positive that Moreland is not our only offensive addition. JD is coming our way (or some other big bat). I hope that Jackie is not traded. If he is traded, I think it's because there was a plan to trade him all along. In other words, the Moreland signing is not necessitating trading Jackie. The more I think about it, the more that I think we can sign JD, keep Hanley and Jackie, and that scenario can work out really well.
  2. Fangraphs is the bomb. No one should ever diss it.
  3. If the Tribune says it, it must be so! I'm not sure when those standings were last updated? That said, some positive regression from the Sox and some negative regression from the Yankees is not unrealistic.
  4. I agree. I would not release Hanley. If he's healthy, he could be a big bat for us, at least against lefties. There will be enough at bats to go around.
  5. There's no log jam even if Hanley is not waived.
  6. If Jackie is traded, I think that move would have been done independently of whether Moreland was acquired or not. Moreland was signed for two reasons: to add insurance for Hanley and to increase leverage against Boras. No, Moreland is not a game changer, but neither is Hosmer. Moreland is solid, will likely improve over last year if healthy, and is reasonably priced. I am advocating that Dombrowski improve our team through adding a #2 starter rather than adding a big bat.
  7. I didn't like the move, but I understood the rationale behind it.
  8. Selling tickets should not play into the choice making. Winning for both the short and long terms is what should factor into the decision making. Selling tickets will naturally follow. It's the splashy, ticket selling moves that end up biting the team.
  9. Sure you can. I do it all the time. There is only so much that you can put your foot down if you are not the boss. In the end, the bosses are going to do what they want to do. Theo went as far as quitting once before because of philosophical differences with Larry. He didn't say "I didn't want to do that" in so many words, but he did state very clearly that there were differences in opinion between building a team to put fans in the seats versus building a team to win.
  10. No, he hasn't given any indication, but I really don't think he likes playing in Boston.
  11. If Price is healthy and pitches well, he can probably improve upon his current contract. I didn't think it was possible to outdo an already bad contract, but it has happened enough to make me realize that it is indeed possible. If Price spends any time on the DL, all bets are off.
  12. Fair enough. Not that I agree that he should have been fired.
  13. The state of the elbow could be the deciding factor. But I really believe that he wants to be out of here as quickly as possible.
  14. But seriously, Morleand put up very good numbers before he broke his toe. I think a platoon with him and Hanley at 1B could work out really well.
  15. He is projected to be a 1.5 WAR player this year. At $6.5 million, that's bang for your buck!
  16. Using Fangraphs Depth Charts, the current projected WAR for our 2018 offense is 25.5. A replacement team is typically considered to be worth 48 Wins. With the offense, that puts us at 73.6 Wins.
  17. I agree that the Yankees being big favorites is not necessarily a bad thing. IMO, the Yankees are not finished with the offseason. They'll add a top of the rotation pitcher. They will still have to play the games. I also agree that you make the playoffs anyway you can. If we win the wild card, I'd be happy.
  18. Status quo on the offense, which really wouldn't be status quo with the expected positive regression. Upgrade the pitching. Call it a day.
  19. I give credit where credit is due, even though I'm not a Dombrowski fan. Signing Moreland on a short term deal is a good move. As I said when Moreland was signed last offseason, that's my kind of move. Dombrowski also deserves credit for showing some patience this offseason, rather than grabbing his guy early and overpaying more than he has to.
  20. I disagree about Cherington. He made his mistakes, but signing Sandoval makes no sense as a Cherington move. And I don't think that it was a lack of faith from his superiors. I think it's more of the business side of baseball flexing its muscles over the baseball ops side. They did the same thing with Theo, which is a large part of why Theo left.
  21. I tend to agree. Before the Eck incident, I figured Price would stick it out no matter what. But now, I get the impression that he is really not happy playing in Boston. If he has a healthy and decent year, he will opt out. He should be extremely motivated this year, which is a good thing for us.
  22. He is speaking my language too. The 'sexy' moves are usually the ones that wind up getting a team in trouble.
  23. Well, I don't think it can continue to be done without a strong farm system. Regardless of the large payroll, the farm system is the biggest key. You have to have those cost controlled players and you have to have ways to fill some of the holes through trade. And no, that doesn't mean making a trade like the Kimbrel trade.
  24. Skeptical how? Deals like Longoria's are not included in the calculation. The dollar amount per WAR is an accurate calculation of how much teams spent in free agency on each marginal win, that is, each win above replacement.
