  1. Yes, I get that. But when we start each season, I want our team to be good enough 'on paper' for us to contend. I'll say again that since Henry took over ownership, I have felt that way going into every season, even in the 2 years that we finished last. My fear with the win now approach is that at the end of the window, we will face 3 years or so when we know as we enter the season that we will not make the playoffs. Championships are never guaranteed. Put together a team every year that can contend, without mortgaging the future. Yes, that's possible to do.
  2. Cashman has been on fire the past 2-3 seasons, I'll give you that. But I have to wonder, if the roles were reversed, (not unlike last year when we acquired Sale), would everyone be handing us the title in December? Saying that the Yankees are the favorite is one thing. Already conceding that we'll be playing for the wild card is another.
  3. I like Moreland too. I am happy to have him back. Of course, I am of the opinion that our offense will improve even if we keep the status quo.
  4. LOL Jack Nicely done.
  5. If I knew up front that a title would be guaranteed, I'd be all over it. But my problem with the 'win now' philosophy has always been that the 'winning now' part is never guaranteed, and you sacrifice your future at the same time.
  6. It probably will take at least 5 years to sign him. I think it's too long, but I could live with that, depending on the dollar amount. I would prefer to offer him 4 years at a higher AAV and see if he'd bit. That said, maybe if Dombrowski waits it out long enough, he might become this year's Encarnacion, as Moon said.
  7. Not to mention that the moves that Dombrowski made were only possible thanks to the work that Ben put into the farm. It's easy to spend other people's prospects.
  8. I don't think he boxed himself into a corner. I think he provided himself a little leverage in being able to wait out Boras with regards to signing JD. If we do sign JD, Dombrowski will figure out what to do with Hanley, which very well might be to keep him and JBJ.
  9. FTR, I was not poking fun at you for the use of the word 'lengthed'. I thought it sounded perfectly reasonable, and even used it myself. It was only when I saw the red underscore as I was typing did I realize that it was not a word. It should be though.
  10. That too.
  11. Tek was not overrated. He was underrated, if anything. You want overrated? Talk to me about homeruns and stolen bases.
  12. I don't think signing Martinez to a reasonably lengthed contract is going to be an issue either. I think we may differ on what we consider to be 'reasonably lengthed'. (And apparently 'lengthed' is not a word.) LOL
  13. And Betts was promoted to the bigs by Ben. FTR, I never told you that Devers wouldn't impact the big league roster. I told you that it was a panic move to call him up when they did.
  14. Cherington is no Theo (but who is), but IMO, he at least had his priorities straight with regards to the farm system. Not to rehash the whole debate again, but there is no way signing Sandoval was Cherington's idea. He's possibly responsible for Hanley, and probably responsible for Castillo, but not for Sandoval. Theo > Ben > Dave
  15. And I have no problem thanking Theo. He is the GOAT.
  16. And the soon to be stars?
  17. LOL I can live with that.
  18. Excellent post.
  19. I really don't care if Henry wants to throw $200 million at JD, if that is not going to prevent him from signing a player that we may need in the next couple of years. But we know that isn't the case. A bad contract today WILL limit the team's flexibility in the future, one way or another. My concern is not with how much Henry spends on any contract, it's with how that spending will potentially handcuff the team in the future.
  20. Agree 100%. The downgrade on defense would void much of the upgrade on offense if we traded Jackie. IMO, it wouldn't be worth it.
  21. It does if he's hitting well. If JD is signed, he can be our 4th outfielder as well as our primary DH. That saves a bench spot.
  22. I agree about not releasing Hanley at the moment. I'd keep him around. If he's hitting well, there will be enough at bats for him between DH and 1B. If he stinks, the Sox will be able to limit his at bats without having to phantom DL him.
  23. No, that would be a 'Thanks Dave!'
