  1. Dombrowski said something a couple of days ago about the off season having no deadlines, giving the impression that he was willing to wait on JD a bit longer. That does put the Sox in a difficult situation though. I agree with you and Oldtimer, give JD a take or or leave it offer, then be prepared to move on.
  2. I agree that we have a window, but you're being a little dramatic here.
  3. Once again, that's my point. It's not about staying status quo versus not staying status quo. It's about staying status quo versus taking on a bad contract. You say that staying status quo would be stupid or irrational. So, would you sign JD at any cost in order to improve the status quo, even if it means taking on a 7 year contract?
  4. Post of the year!
  5. You didn't answer the question.
  6. You are not very impressed with the Mike Olt signing, are you? LOL Dombrowski is trying the patient approach this offseason. I like it.
  7. I agree with you in that I'm more concerned with the years than the dollar amount. I would increase the AAV if that meant we could sign JD for fewer years.
  8. If I had more confidence in Price being able to stay healthy all season, then I'd be in favor of a bat over pitching.
  9. Well, that's kind of my point. You have a limit as to how high you would go. So do I, mine just happens to be 5 years, though I would even the AAV. I realize that JD is likely not getting 7 years, but if you had to choose between giving him the 7 year deal (something above your limit) or going status quo, which would you do? I would rather go status quo than give JD 6+ years. I am on board with a 5 year deal to JD, even though that's one year more than I would like to give him.
  10. That was cold Moon. Good one though!
  11. I have never had poutine, although I do like french fries, with or without gravy.
  12. If the Sox sign JD, that makes his chances of being called up even less likely, although they are very slim to begin with. The Sox should just go ahead and trade him for whatever they can get, even if they have to eat a good chunk of his salary. Thanks Ben!
  13. I would like to sign JD if we can sign him for 5 years or less. But I agree with you that Hanley's surgery might really make a difference with his performance. Again, I would be okay with keeping our offense as is.
  14. FTR, I am also very near certain that Dombrowski will make a major acquisition of some sort. Not that I will necessarily agree with what he does, but I'm almost certain he will do something big.
  15. So, you both are on board with signing JD to $210 mil/ 7 years, if that's what it takes?
  16. I have nothing against the fine country of Canada, nor its fine citizens. I was just messing around with Bellhorn, but I do think they're a crazy bunch! Anyone who spends as much time curling as they do must be a crazy bunch.
  17. No, but I think that Canadians are fair game. They are a crazy bunch!
  18. No, the chances are not that remote. Bogey's best years are better than some of Machado's. It's not likely, but it's also far from unrealistic.
  19. It's not a choice between going status quo or not going status quo. It's a choice between going status quo with an already very good team versus making a mistake with another bad contract.
  20. And I really do believe that we are a contending team, as is. Of course, that largely depends on the health of our starting rotation. But I am not really concerned about our offense.
  21. No, what was irrational was creating that window and the subsequent cliff to begin with.
  22. LOL You are really trying to get Moon and me in trouble, aren't you? Even though I believe the Sox, as currently constructed, will contend for the division (and certainly a wild card spot) I do not really think it's a good idea to go status quo, although I have often said that I'd go status quo on the offense and get a #2 starter instead. But if given a choice between giving JD the 7 yr/ $210 mil that Boras is asking for or going status quo, I'd go status quo. I'd even go status quo over giving JD a 6 year deal. All that said, I really think it's a moot point. Like you, I am confident that Dombrowski is going to make a major acquisition one way or another. I'm pretty sure it will be JD.
  23. I would have done that. I really wanted Lester back. I think at the time, I was pretty adamant about 5 years, but then conceded to go ahead and give him the 6th year if that's what it would take.
  24. I agree that it will be disappointing if we don't add a major player this offseason. However, would you rather grossly overpay for that player, in other words, sign him at any cost, or go status quo? I would rather go status quo.
  25. To me, anything over 4 years gets into that 'too risky' category, especially for aging players. That's not to say it should never be done. And I realize that signing big contracts is sometimes a necessary evil. I was and still am perfectly happy with the extension that the Sox gave to Pedroia. But even with that, we are starting to feel the downside of that contract. BTW, Dombrowski recently stated that there are no deadlines set for the offer to JD.
