  1. Not true. Bogaerts outperformed Machado last season in WAR (3.2 to 2.8) and Bogaerts was injured and played in 8 fewer games. Machado is the better overall player, but outperforming Bogaerts next season is not a given. We'll have to disagree on the improvement of our current players. IMO, it's a moot point anyway because I am sure that the Sox will be adding that bat.
  2. No. He's done well so far, but pitchers over 30 are too risky. Price was about as sure a thing as one could get for pitchers over 30, and he hasn't exactly panned out for us.
  3. Ben's hands were tied in terms of handing out big contracts to aging pitchers. Not that he would have wanted to hand one out anyway, and rightly so.
  4. I completely agree about JD. As far as next year's FA class goes, I'm not condoning that we break the bank for any of those guys either.
  5. If spending and prospects were unlimited, you go with Machado. Since they aren't, you go with the better value. I know people disagree with that philosophy because we are a big market team, but it doesn't make sense to me to spend a ridiculous amount on Machado when we already have Bogaerts. Of course, I have a higher opinion of Bogaerts than most people here do.
  6. Of course it's realistic. Look at the state of the remainder of the AL besides the teams that are also projected to make the playoffs. In particular, look at the state of the AL East besides the Yankees. It's pretty sad.
  7. Speaking in terms of one year, Bogaerts could outperform Machado. I agree that it's not likely, but it's also not unrealistic. Certainly in terms of the added cost it would take to get Machado, I don't think he's worth it over Bogaerts. As far as our overall offense is concerned, I do believe that we'll see some positive regression from several players. We have a very good, solid young core who underperformed last year. People need to stop selling them short.
  8. If the Sox sign JD, I am 50-50 on whether they would then trade Jackie or Hanley. If they trade either, my choice would be Hanley as well, but I don't think it's necessary that either gets traded. I think there will be enough at bats to keep everyone happy. There likely wouldn't be enough at bats to allow Hanley's option to kick in, but that should be a motivating factor for Hanley. If he's hitting, he'll get the at bats. Personally, I don't see Hanley as a malcontent.
  9. I agree on all counts.
  10. I don't think it's unrealistic that Bogaerts outplays Machado next season. Machado is a great player, but I wouldn't give up on Bogaerts. I am in no rush to trade him, plus others, to get Machado for one year, just like I was in no rush to trade Beni and others for Stanton and his huge contract. I'm fine with the guys we have. Especially since Fangraphs currently has us winning the same number of games as the Yankees.
  11. LOL I'm reading that Dombrowski is considering upping his offer to JD to 6 years. Don't do it Dave! Stand your ground!
  12. IMO, the decline of Bard had nothing to do with the decision to convert him to a starter. There were clear signs of Bard's difficulties starting at the end of the previous season. I think Bard would have fallen apart either way. Regardless, if you have a pitcher that could realistically be a starter, I think you have to give it a shot. Starters are more valuable than relievers are. If it doesn't work, you put the guy back in the pen. It's usually not a big deal. Bard's inability to succeed has more to do with Bard's mental state than anything else.
  13. I agree with all of this.
  14. Can teams do that? I would think that no team wants the other teams to know what their offer is, if that's the case.
  15. IMO, he was a luxury that we didn't need. But I also felt like our offense would be fine without Papi. Not as good as it was in 2016, but still in the top 3. I view the Yankees' acquisition of Stanton very similarly to our acquisition of Sale. Of course Sale and Stanton make their respective teams better, but did the teams really need those players?
  16. This was all very true. I was highly upset when Damon defected to the Evil Empire, but the bottom line is that Theo was right to let him walk for the reasons that you mentioned. But let's not forget the fact that Damon is a big crybaby traitor.
  17. Yes, he should grant that courtesy to each team that he knows is seriously interested. Obviously, as a Red Sox fan, I would want him to only grant the courtesy to the Sox, but as an agent, he has to grant the courtesy to all teams.
  18. Right or wrong, when a player selects Boras as his agent, I lose a little bit of respect for that player. Not because of Boras personally, but because of the inherent message that the player is sending.
  19. IMO, that was Damon being a baby because his feelings were hurt by the Sox. Not that I hold a grudge against Damon or anything...........
  20. In terms of being a good agent, I think Boras should play teams against each other and I think that he should ask other interested teams to top it. He should be trying to get the best offers he can get, then let his client decide which one he wants. I don't think the Sox should tell Boras that they'll top any offer, but I think the Sox should ask Boras to give them that chance.
  21. I don't think that the Sox should get into a bidding war with another team. They should already have in mind what they think JD is worth, and not go above that limit. Theo operated that way. I'm not sure that Dombrowski does. At any rate, I hope that Dombrowski has asked Boras to give him a chance to beat any offer given to JD before allowing JD to sign with another team. Not that Dombrowski should necessarily beat said offer, but at least give him that courtesy in case the other offer is not crazy.
  22. My opinion that we currently need another #2 starter is based on the uncertainty of Price's (and ERod's) health. At the time that Sale was acquired, he was not a necessity. He was an expensive luxury. Now it turns out in hindsight that we did need Sale, but Dombrowski didn't know that at the time. The whole point behind giving Price that huge contract was that he was our much needed ace. We didn't need a second ace.
  23. LOL I know there are several posters who feel this way, but I like the characters on the team. I got frustrated with many of them throughout the season, but I like the team. I don't like Machado, but I fully admit that if the Sox traded for or signed him, my opinion is likely to change. My reasons for not wanting to get Machado go beyond my not liking him.
  24. I was not as dead set against Hosmer as you were, per se. I was just dead set against the type of contract I figured he would get. Seven years for him is just crazy. Santana's deal is more reasonable, but even with that, the $20 mil a year is a bit much. Plus, he had that dreaded qualifying offer attached to him. I am perfectly fine with having Moreland back.
  25. At one time, I would have completely agreed with this. However, after seeing Greinke receive a larger contract after opting out, I wouldn't be surprised to see Price do the same if he pitches well this season. Also, if Price is unhappy in Boston, he just might be willing to leave a little money on the table. So maybe he doesn't get quite as much, but he could receive a comparable contract from a team that he would be much happier pitching for. That said, there are two things working heavily against Price opting out: 1. His elbow 2. The new CBA penalties
