  1. Oh, I agree. I don't think he'll be a liability. That wasn't my point. My point is that with normal regression, the Yankees lineup may not be as lethal as you think it will be.
  2. It's not the injury, per se. It's the rash decision to move Swihart off of catcher. He should not have been replaced by Vaz after only 8 games, but since he was, he should have focused on playing catcher. I don't blame the injury on Dombrowski, just the poor decision making which hampered Swihart's progress. That being said, blaming the injury on Dombrowski is no different than you blaming Wright's injury on Farrell.
  3. Exactly. And even if he doesn't have a 'big sophomore slump', it's very possible, likely even, that he's not as good as last year.
  4. No, but it was his desperation that caused Swihart to lose valuable development time.
  5. Of course I have no idea what's going on in Ells' mind, but perhaps he values the legit chance of winning another WS Ring over being a full time player. Also, he seems to think he can challenge for more playing time. IMO, Ells is not waiving the no trade clause for a non contending, east coast team.
  6. I realize that the off season is not complete and that you take projections with a grain of salt, but on paper, Fangraphs currently has the Red Sox with the 3rd best offense in baseball, behind the Astros and the Yankees. The Astros are projected to score 865 runs, the Yankees are projected to score 837.5 runs, and the Red Sox are projected to score 824.6 runs. Despite the Yankees adding Stanton, they are projected to score fewer runs than they did last year. And despite the Red Sox being status quo so far, we are projected to score more runs than last year. It looks like the stat geeks believe there will be some regression from both teams, the Yankees in the negative direction and the Sox in the positive direction. IMO, we don't need that big bat as much as most people think we do.
  7. No, he hasn't. He has given himself a little more leverage.
  8. Sounds reasonable to me.
  9. I said that I would be okay with that, as long as it's a straight team option and not a vesting option. That's essentially a 5 year deal, with the Red Sox being able to retain him for a 6th if he is still hitting. I wonder if giving JD an opt out after 2 or 3 years will help to get it done.
  10. If we are going to add another starter instead of adding JD, I most definitely want it to be a #2 type starter, not a #4/5. Porcello will likely see some regression this season, but as I said, I don't have the confidence in him that I previously had. I always believed he was a #2 pitcher, but he has to get back to dominant sinker that he has.
  11. I realize that there are other players that could be signed instead of JD. My point is that if it comes down to staying status quo or taking on a bad contract, I'd stay status quo, regardless of who the bad contract is for. There are worse things than remaining status quo when you have a team that is already a contender.
  12. All fair points. If Dombrowski wants to play the waiting game, I'm fine with that. What I don't want him to do is to panic and cave in to Boras' demands.
  13. That could very well be the case. Dombrowski even said that there was no deadline.
  14. I can't see Ellsbury waiving his no trade clause to go to the Os.
  15. Wrist/hand injuries are a tricky thing, as they can tend to linger. If Bogaerts is healthy, I expect a very good year from him. He was hitting very well before the injury last season. I realize that he might have faded in the 2nd half even without the injury, but he might have just as likely gone on to have a great season. Also, he has been working on improving his launch angle. I think that will help.
  16. I agree on patience, to a certain extent. And I also agree that JD is likely getting a bit edgy. However, we don't want to find ourselves in the situation where we lose out on other possible free agents while waiting on JD. If Dombrowski has a Plan B and Plan C, then there is only so much longer that he can wait on JD to make a decision.
  17. That's it, in a nutshell.
  18. If we sign him, I hope the plan is to keep our outfield intact and mostly use him as a DH. JD will get plenty of playing time in the OF as a 4th outfielder. I have not seen any indication that JD is unwilling to sign as a DH.
  19. You are spot on with your arguments here Hitch. Thank you.
  20. I could live with that.
  21. I am not opposed to signing him. I am opposed to signing him for more than 5 years.
  22. The Sox will be fine whether they make any further moves or not. They do not have to 'go for it'. Taking on another bad contract to 'go for it' would be just piling on to the long term damage that has already been done to this team. As I said before, the Yankees don't scare me.
  23. You are trying to divert the question and the issue at hand. Hitch is absolutely right in his arguments. You need to just admit that 'Kimmi is right'.
  24. Sure, it's a fair either-or to ask. My point is that at some point, a contract becomes bad enough that the team would be better off standing pat than taking on the contract. I get that if we don't sign JD, there are other moves we can make over standing pat. The question applies to the other options as well.
  25. ERod's injury is part of it. Another part of it is that I'm expecting regression from Pomeranz. And another part of it is the way Porcello performed last year. I didn't expect him to repeat his 2016, but I thought he would be much better than he was last year. I'm not sure what to expect from him going forward.
