No, the metrics do not come into question. You (and I don't mean you personally) just have to understand how the various WARs are calculated. This also pertains to the defensive metrics that are being poo-poo-ed in another thread.

It is overrated. Having a strong bullpen is not overrated. However, spending top dollar to build that strong bullpen is not the way to go.

That is just insane. I have felt that spending big money or prospects on relievers is crazy. There are much better ways for teams to use their resources. From what I've been reading, the Rockies just improved their WAR total by a little more than ONE win with this signing. Insane.

As was the case with Stanton, Just Say No to Machado. If we have any plans of acquiring Machado, it would make so much more sense to just wait until next year when he will only cost an outrageous amount in dollars, not in dollars plus prospects.

No, it's not a screwy equation. It's an accurate calculation of how much a player was worth to his team in terms of how much teams paid for marginal wins through free agency. That doesn't mean that a GM will sign a player for $56 mil per year, but if he did and said player put up 8 WAR, he would be worth his contract.

I am positive that Moreland is not our only offensive addition. JD is coming our way (or some other big bat). I hope that Jackie is not traded. If he is traded, I think it's because there was a plan to trade him all along. In other words, the Moreland signing is not necessitating trading Jackie. The more I think about it, the more that I think we can sign JD, keep Hanley and Jackie, and that scenario can work out really well.

If the Tribune says it, it must be so! I'm not sure when those standings were last updated? That said, some positive regression from the Sox and some negative regression from the Yankees is not unrealistic.

I agree. I would not release Hanley. If he's healthy, he could be a big bat for us, at least against lefties. There will be enough at bats to go around.

If Jackie is traded, I think that move would have been done independently of whether Moreland was acquired or not. Moreland was signed for two reasons: to add insurance for Hanley and to increase leverage against Boras. No, Moreland is not a game changer, but neither is Hosmer. Moreland is solid, will likely improve over last year if healthy, and is reasonably priced. I am advocating that Dombrowski improve our team through adding a #2 starter rather than adding a big bat.

Selling tickets should not play into the choice making. Winning for both the short and long terms is what should factor into the decision making. Selling tickets will naturally follow. It's the splashy, ticket selling moves that end up biting the team.

Sure you can. I do it all the time. There is only so much that you can put your foot down if you are not the boss. In the end, the bosses are going to do what they want to do. Theo went as far as quitting once before because of philosophical differences with Larry. He didn't say "I didn't want to do that" in so many words, but he did state very clearly that there were differences in opinion between building a team to put fans in the seats versus building a team to win.

No, he hasn't given any indication, but I really don't think he likes playing in Boston.

If Price is healthy and pitches well, he can probably improve upon his current contract. I didn't think it was possible to outdo an already bad contract, but it has happened enough to make me realize that it is indeed possible. If Price spends any time on the DL, all bets are off.

The state of the elbow could be the deciding factor. But I really believe that he wants to be out of here as quickly as possible.

But seriously, Morleand put up very good numbers before he broke his toe. I think a platoon with him and Hanley at 1B could work out really well.

He is projected to be a 1.5 WAR player this year. At $6.5 million, that's bang for your buck!

Using Fangraphs Depth Charts, the current projected WAR for our 2018 offense is 25.5. A replacement team is typically considered to be worth 48 Wins. With the offense, that puts us at 73.6 Wins.

I agree that the Yankees being big favorites is not necessarily a bad thing. IMO, the Yankees are not finished with the offseason. They'll add a top of the rotation pitcher. They will still have to play the games. I also agree that you make the playoffs anyway you can. If we win the wild card, I'd be happy.

Status quo on the offense, which really wouldn't be status quo with the expected positive regression. Upgrade the pitching. Call it a day.

I give credit where credit is due, even though I'm not a Dombrowski fan. Signing Moreland on a short term deal is a good move. As I said when Moreland was signed last offseason, that's my kind of move. Dombrowski also deserves credit for showing some patience this offseason, rather than grabbing his guy early and overpaying more than he has to.
