  1. It might be a lowball offer, but it's an excellent counter to Boras' ridiculous 7 yr, $210 mil demand.
  2. Doesn't make much sense. Fans are weird. LOL I heard a lot of people say that last year's team was not very much fun to watch or not very likable. Personally, I had no problem with them. I found them very enjoyable and likable, though they did have a couple of moments.
  3. The members of the media sometimes leave me scratching my head with what they write. Usually, they do a good job, but it seems like they don't always double check their facts before writing some things.
  4. Good for him. Not that many kids even get opportunities like he is getting. He must be pretty good.
  5. How did a tweak on Dave turn into a jab at Ben? LOL FTR, I like his patient approach this offseason.
  6. I'd prefer a top starting pitcher over a big bat, but I will be very happy if we sign JD to a (somewhat) reasonable contract. That said, I am cooling off on him some too because of the supposed "I'll wait into spring training to sign" comment. That just rubs the me wrong way for some reason. I can't see us doing nothing either. I've been confident all offseason that Dombrowski will sign a big bat. I'm still confident about that, but the waiting is definitely wearing thin.
  7. Absolutely. If the team is winning, fans will come to the games and they will come to love the Sandy Leons of the baseball world.
  8. I completely agree. Most fans don't follow things like the offseason, , payroll, CBA penalties, etc. closely enough to know any better.
  9. Dave is trying to make a point. He is now desperate to prove that he is not desperate.
  10. How cool would that be if the Red Sox drafted him? I know it's a long shot for him, but hey, you never know.
  11. I agree that the team could work around the 'logjam'. I was just highlighting my point to a700 that staying status quo would be better than making a bad deal, not that I necessarily think signing Morrison is a bad deal.
  12. Agents and FOs might be professional, but a player going to arbitration still has to listen to all the reasons why a team doesn't think the player is worth what the player thinks he is worth. That could certainly create some hard feelings.
  13. I tend to agree. Let's turn our efforts to Mr. Darvish. He will be expensive too, but maybe he'll be a little more reasonable with his demands than JD. I think we need the pitching more than the bat anyway.
  14. This is correct. Every player who has had a better than average year is not going to regress. It could be that the player is entering his prime, etc. When a young player like Mookie takes a step backward, however, I feel pretty confident in saying that we will see some positive regression.
  15. There are a lot of factors that need to be considered, but I think 3 years should give a meaningful mean. You want to take into account what the player was projected to do. I know that projections aren't the end all be all, but they factor in past performance, along with other things like the player's age (whether the player is entering his prime or declining). IMO, you can then get a fairly good idea about whether the player underperformed or overperformed, and whether regression is likely or a continuing trend in a certain direction is more likely. I've posted this before: In terms of predicting howa player will play the remainder of the season, projections trump in season performance to date at any point in the season.
  16. Thank the stat geeks for that.
  17. Well, fans need to stop demanding it because we should know by now how quickly and badly these contracts can turn. Start demanding a strong farm system, more home grown players, and shorter term contracts to '2nd tier' type players!
  18. Five years at $25 mil/yr is already likely to be a bad contract. There's no sense in compounding the bad by tacking on more years.
  19. LOL Is the irony of that title lost on everybody?
  20. Stanton's contract is absurd, regardless of the low (relatively) AAV. Any 10 year contract is absurd, IMO. It doesn't matter if the player is mid 20 when he signs the contract.
  21. It's not really about how much JBJ, Betts, or Kelly are worth what they get paid. IMO, they're all more than worth it. It's just the way the system works. I have no issue with Betts thinking he deserves more, but at the same time, I also have no issue with the team's $7.5 figure. It's a very fair offer for a 2nd year arb player, and a considerable raise over the $950,000 that he made last year.
  22. That is pretty cool. Let us know when he makes it to the bigs.
  23. I like the Astros more and more everyday. If I weren't a Red Sox fan, I would jump on the Stros bandwagon.
  24. It appears that you and I are the only ones who feel this is worth mentioning. Good for Cameron and the Padres. Very sad for Fangraphs fans. I will miss reading his articles.
