It's possible that if Boras and JD wait too long, JD might end up getting burned and have to settle for an Encarnacion type deal. Not likely, but possible. Hold the line, Dave.

What's funny though is that I remember a lot of criticism over signing Beltre in the first place. I'm not saying you specifically, but I do remember a lot of people hating that move. I was against re-signing him for the type of contract that he received. Obviously, I was wrong about that. However, the players that we receive in comp picks do affect the overall rating of that decision.

The comp picks that we got for Beltre and the other players that we let walk absolutely factor into the decision to let him go. Theo was all about those comp picks, so much so that I think he signed players with the subsequent comp picks in mind. It goes back to balancing the short term with the long term.

I agree that this year is probably as good a year as any to try to break in two rookies. That said, you also seem to be assuming that everyone on the team is going to perform at or above your expectations. Not likely to happen.

We need to sign another starter, #2/3 type. That would actually be my preference over signing JD.

I concur. I beleive I read that JD would prefer to play the OF if given the choice, but at the same time he gave no indication that he would be unhappy or unwilling to DH. IMO, the holdup is strictly over the # of years. JD wants 6 or 7, Dombrowski is not willing to go more than 5.

I really liked this trade when it happened. And I do think you have to factor in subsequent trades of players when trying to determine who 'won' the original trade.

In all seriousness, and I've posted this before regarding my Red Sox, it's one thing to depend on one rookie to fill a key position for the entire season. It's another thing to depend on two rookies to fill two key positions. It might work out okay, but it's taking on a lot of risk and uncertainty.

And IIRC, AGon was put in RF to be able to keep him all the bats in the lineup during interleague play? Not the wisest move though, I agree.

I disagree. IMO, it's very similar to decision to call Devers up to the bigs after Dombrowski said he would not be rushed up. It was a panic move. The difference is that Devers worked out, Swihart didn't. I agree that Vazquez was considered to be the catcher of the future, but he was not completely ready to return yet. I believe it was a move based off of an extremely, extremely small sample of games.

Honestly, I don't see any difference between blaming Swihart's injury on Dombrowski and blaming Wright's injury on Farrell. Neither one of those injuries can be blamed on the respective GM or manager. As you said, injuries happen. We'll just have to disagree about the decision to move Swihart to left field. IMO, it was a rash and panicky move, based on a couple of poor games by Swihart behind the plate.

I think the Yankees offense will be a little better than the current Fangraphs predictions. I don't think they'll be as good some people think they're going to be. And yes, I am a big fan of the concept of regression.

Oh, I agree. I don't think he'll be a liability. That wasn't my point. My point is that with normal regression, the Yankees lineup may not be as lethal as you think it will be.

It's not the injury, per se. It's the rash decision to move Swihart off of catcher. He should not have been replaced by Vaz after only 8 games, but since he was, he should have focused on playing catcher. I don't blame the injury on Dombrowski, just the poor decision making which hampered Swihart's progress. That being said, blaming the injury on Dombrowski is no different than you blaming Wright's injury on Farrell.

Exactly. And even if he doesn't have a 'big sophomore slump', it's very possible, likely even, that he's not as good as last year.

No, but it was his desperation that caused Swihart to lose valuable development time.

Of course I have no idea what's going on in Ells' mind, but perhaps he values the legit chance of winning another WS Ring over being a full time player. Also, he seems to think he can challenge for more playing time. IMO, Ells is not waiving the no trade clause for a non contending, east coast team.
