  1. Of course you upgrade if you have an opportunity to do so, assuming the price is reasonable. I have never said that my preference is to stand pat, just that we would be okay if we did. I hope we sign JD, but JD has to agree to that. If he doesn't, we'll be okay.
  2. The Yankees are currently projected to have a run differential of 2 runs better than the Red Sox.
  3. It made no sense whatsoever that so many of our batters performed below expectations. That might be one thing if they were aging players, but they are at an age where they should be improving as they reach their prime. I really do think we'll see a good offense this year, even without JD.
  4. I read this a couple of days ago, and of course, I agree completely with what Kory is saying. As he says, it's not just possible, but it's very likely that most of our offense will improve, and possible that some will improve significantly. Positive regression, baby, positive regression!
  5. Of course the preference would be to upgrade somewhere, but why doesn't standing pat cut it? The team won 93 games last year with a lot of underperformances and no Price for a good bit of the season.
  6. Now we're talking. I think that the team, as currently constructed, will be a contender. I'd still like to upgrade somewhere, but I think we're fine if we don't.
  7. A healthy Price is the key, IMO. If he's healthy, I expect him to have a great season. Having the likes of Johnson, Elias, and Velazquez take starts in place of Price represents a pretty big drop off.
  8. This is encouraging.
  9. Porcello needs to keep the beard all season. Good mojo.
  10. Bradley has been an early arrival to camp every year, as far as I know. Not to take anything away from the other guys that also arrive early, but that is something that impressed me with Jackie early on. I've said it before, I probably pull harder for him than I do for any other player. He seems to really want it.
  11. May 11th
  12. Gotcha. I thought you were talking about free agents, not the team controlled players. IMO, allowing every player to be a free agent will only make the rich richer.
  13. Oh I know that owners aren't going to reduce prices, but they should. Owners should be required to spend a certain % of their revenue sharing on payroll. If not, they should be required to return it. IMO, it is wrong owners to be pocketing that amount.
  14. A team of all replacement players is expected to win roughly 48 games. The owners are paying free agents for wins above that level. For a 95 win team, that's 47 additional wins. The Fangraphs dollar figure is based off of the 47 additional wins, not the 95 total wins. Free agent contracts have really gotten out of hand in recent years. In particular, owners are paying insane prices for relief pitchers, who just don't add that much value to the team in terms of wins. If a WIN above replacement costs $8 mil, then isn't if fair to say that a 4 win player was worth $32 mil to his team? Not that he'll get that in free agency, but he does have that value to his team.
  15. Within MLB, there are 30 different teams, or businesses. If one team gives a take or leave it offer, the player has 29 other teams it can turn to. Those 29 teams are competing against each other, each trying to bring in the best players that they can. I don't see that as a monopoly. I don't see that as being any different than if I were applying for a job and one company gave me a take it or leave it offer. I have the choice of taking it or trying another company. And if no other company (team) is beating the first company's offer, than I'd have to consider the likelihood that my demands are too high.
  16. I pretty much agree. Again, it would be one thing if the owners were lowballing every player. But they aren't. The contracts that are being offered are very good. Owners should not be forced to make terrible business decisions.
  17. What happened to the player who would look that tough pitcher in the eye and say bring it. I agree that this type of thing that Bellhorn is talking about would happen and it's rather disheartening. Also to Bell's point, if a player is that close to reaching the performance level to have the option vest, I would think that the team could still decide to pick up the option even though it didn't automatically vest.
  18. In terms of what they are willing to offer a free agent, no owner is going to buy into it. In terms of the financial value that a win brings to the team, it is absolutely correct.
  19. I think we are all feeling this to one degree or another. However, if he signs with the Red Sox and produces like we hope he will, all will be forgiven.
  20. No argument here. What the billionaire owners should do is throw some of that profit back to the fans by way of lowering ticket prices, concession prices, etc.
  21. I'm with you. It's hard to have any sympathy for the players.
  22. I understood what you were getting at. I guess the idea that a player would sit against a tough pitcher so that he doesn't hurt his numbers just doesn't sit well with me at all. I don't think you're being cynical about it. I'm sure it would happen, but it shouldn't. It's like players who have great years in their contract years. They're suddenly motivated to train harder or spend more time in the batting cage or something?
  23. I am okay with overpaying free agents a little. I am okay with giving JD the 5 year contract. I am not okay with grossly overpaying, especially when it involves bidding against yourself. I do not like the idea of doing away with the draft altogether. However, I think there could be some tweaks with the way the team controlled players are paid. Some suggestions might be to decrease the number of team control years from 6 years to 4 years, or maybe having an age limit where a player automatically becomes a free agent, regardless of years of service? Or increasing the league minimum salary? The problem is that most players are improving while they are team controlled, and peak at about age 28. By the time they get ready to sign that big contract, they are already in decline.
  24. Well a player that is too scared to face a tough pitcher doesn't deserve the extra year.
  25. Well IMO, players should have a bit of pressure to perform. Keeps them honest.
