  1. I will be pulling for Price and Pedroia alike. I personally think that they are both leaders. They both made mistakes, which all leaders do, but that doesn't mean that they aren't good leaders. I agree with you about Sale being a great leader. He, too, had a lapse in judgment with the uniform thing.
  2. Sounds about right. Absolutely no way should JD get a 6th year, and this was my feeling at the beginning of the off season, when we didn't know the market would be so tough. As I've said before, one side of me says offer him $10 mil more if that would get him to sign now, while at the same time saving some face. The other side of me says Dombrowski has no reason to outbid himself. If neither side is going to budge, it's time to go to Plan B. Whatever that is.
  3. Yes, I believe he was in that case. He was not being a leader when he cut up the unis, however.
  4. I really hope that Boras gives Dombrowski the courtesy of allowing him to top any offer before JD signs elsewhere.
  5. I don't think the offer to JD is a lowball offer, considering no other team has offered more. However, if the current offer is indeed $100 mil, which is a lot lower than anyone expected JD to be signed for, it doesn't feel like Dombrowski is that intent on signing JD. I completely understand and agree with the idea of not bidding against yourself, but this just seems to go so against Dombrowski's MO with free agents. I am surprised he hasn't increased the offer a little to get his man.
  6. To me, leading by example is absolutely leadership.
  7. Personally, I think Sale has been a great leader for our team. That said, he did not exhibit great leadership at all when he cut up the uniforms with Chicago.
  8. I agree with this 100%. I have always said that a manager's most important job is what he does off the field, not on it.
  9. Well, that's the impression that I got from reading some of the posts (not necessarily yours). I have heard comments along the lines of the team lacking leadership once Papi left, implying that Papi was that guy leading the team to the promised land. Leadership comes in many forms. A player being a good role model by having a great work ethic and attitude can be an excellent leader without saying a word. I think we have several of those guys on our team. I guess I'm just not buying that last year's team lacked leadership.
  10. I can't argue with that.
  11. I do not disagree. There is no reason why Dombrowski should have to raise his offer. JD needs to come to grips with the reality of his market. That said, I do want JD on our team. And I'd like to have some kind of resolution to the whole matter.
  12. I am fully on board with this post.
  13. This is a time when I'd really like to be able to give a vesting option based on performance. A little creativity similar to Darvish's deal might do the trick. I am guessing that the deal will ultimately contain an opt out after 2 or 3 years. My head is telling me that Dave needs to stand pat, on principle if nothing else. My heart is telling me to give JD the extra $10 mil (if that will get the deal done), and call it a day.
  14. No clue. You'll have to enlighten us.
  15. I'm not really sure what this great team leader was supposed to do. Inspire the other players to work harder? Does anyone really think that our players were not working or trying hard enough? I see it as quite the opposite. I think they were trying too hard. A team does not necessarily lack leadership because they don't have that guy who's going to be a vocal presence in the clubhouse. There are other ways to be a leader.
  16. I do not disagree that we had some blunders where a player just didn't have his head in the game. However, I think it is far fewer than some others think it is.
  17. There are many fans who have said similar things, or said that last year's team was not very likable. I just don't agree with it. I found the team very likable and enjoyable to watch. And I believe that many of the mental blunders can be attributed to the guys trying too hard.
  18. Or maybe Theo had Lucchino forcing his hand in the matter.
  19. Once again, stop. Just stop.
  20. Bingo. Dombrowski is no Theo, that's for sure.
  21. And this is why JD needs to come to grips with reality. I can see Dombrowski going up to $150 mil if he needs to, but as of now, there is no need to do so. One of the writers suggested that Dombrowski increase his overall offer by $5-$10 mil. It really wouldn't be much of a difference for the Sox, but it might be enough of a moral victory to JD to get him to end the standoff. And he might come to Boston with less 'bitterness'. I'm not sure whether I agree with this or not. On one hand, it would be nice to get him signed and have him with the team for spring training. OTOH, why should Dombrowski bid against himself? Especially if there isn't another offer that's fairly close.
  22. Nah, the playoffs are pretty much a crapshoot. The better team does have a slight advantage, and I do mean slight, but not really enough to make a difference.
  23. I didn't like AJ because the dude would not take a pitch. I know we want our guys to be a little more aggressive, but AJ took it to the other extreme. At least it felt like it.
  24. It is messed up indeed.
