  1. IMO, yes. He overpaid, more so for Kimbrel than for Sale. It's not whether those prospects have or will amount to anything, or whether they were blocked. It's about getting back proper value for them at the time of the trade. Obviously, I'm not unhappy with having either Sale or Kimbrel on the team. I could accept any of those deals individually. I am unhappy with the state of our farm system. Let's hope that we win the WS this year.
  2. It's going to happen. The Sox merely have to go 4-9 in their remaining games to get to 106. As I said before, reaching 106 wins should not be the focus, but when it happens, it will be pretty cool.
  3. Yes, and this looks like a theme that is definitely going to continue in the playoffs. It kind of gives us the best of both worlds. Strong defense behind the plate with Leon and Vaz, and good offense in being able to pinch hit for both of them, if needed. I'm all for 3 catchers on the postseason roster. All that said, Cora said last night that his postseason roster decisions would not be based on small samples.
  4. I'd like to give a little shout out to Brock Holt, whom nearly everyone here was against bringing back for a mere $2.2 million. After the terrible time that he had last year with the concussion issues, he has bounced back fairly well and has come up with a few big pinch hits. Additionally, he seems to be a great presence in the clubhouse and just an overall good person. Anyone who gets nominated for the Roberto Clemente Award is okay in my book. Good for him.
  5. I really would have no problem with the Yankees signing Machado and Harper. Admittedly, I have a little 'girl' crush on Kershaw. Seeing him in pinstripes would stink just because I like him as a player so much.
  6. I agree with everything you've said here. I don't think anyone is asking Dombrowski to hoard the prospects, nor do I think Ben would have hoarded them in 2016 if he had remained with the team. I was okay with Dombrowski trading Espinoza for Pomeranz, though I wasn't crazy about what we gave up. My beef is with the sheer magnitude of prospects that were traded away in such a short period of time and IMO, overpaying in many cases. I strongly believe a more balanced approach between long and short term goals could have been found that would not only make the team a contender for the short term, but also leave the state of the farm in much better shape for the longer term. I will finish by saying that if we win the WS this year or next, or both years, then it will have all been worth it. As you say, flags fly forever.
  7. Porcello held the Mets to 2 hits over 5 innings. It just so happens that one of the hits was a home run that followed the other hit and rare walk. Change the sequencing or the timing of those events, and he would have only given up one run. Porcello is not going to be Sale or Price, but he should be solid as our #3 guy in the playoffs.
  8. Memo to the offense: You got this!
  9. In case anyone missed it, Tito's Tribe are the first team to officially clinch a division title. Congrats to them.
  10. Yeah, I like that one too.
  11. It would be awesome. I thought the Yankees were the slight favorites going into the season, but I wasn't buying all that talk about how they would be unstoppable or even that they were a clear favorite. I figured it would be a dog fight all season, possibly going down to the last series, with the Sox having as good a chance as the Yankees to win the division. I honestly never imagined that we would have a 10.5 game lead at any point in the season. Life is good.
  12. I'm on board with both suggestions.
  13. LOL I think it's the folks who are saying that it's not over yet that burn him.
  14. True, but you don't ever mess with voodoo clown sh*t!
  15. As long as he doesn't sign with the Yankees.
  16. To me it's not clutch, it's just Bogey being a good hitter in general. Part of being a good hitter is to know the situation and to adjust accordingly. Ortiz did the same thing. He was a smart hitter and he was a good hitter. He hit well in the clutch because he hit well in general.
  17. I know. I'm just trying to convince myself that JD will not opt out after next year.
  18. Obviously, nothing in baseball is 100% predictable. That is not the same as saying that there are no repeatable skills in baseball. There are several hitting stats that correlate strongly from one year to the next. The ability to make contact is a strong repeatable skill. Other offensive skills that are repeatable are K%, BB%, GB%, ISO, SLG, OPS, OBP, and wOBA, based on their year to year correlations. Some things that do not correlate well, meaning that a lot is left to randomness or luck are BA, BABIP, LD%, and Clutch.
  19. Kershaw? That would stink.
  20. The Jays held on, thankfully. There is now a very real chance that we can clinch @ NY this next series.

  22. Hitting is a skill. Hitting in the clutch is not.
  23. Yup. As I said, it will be interesting to see how things play out this year.
