  1. I wouldn't say that what pitchers do this series has no value, but I also don't think that a pitcher is going to win or lose a roster spot based solely on what he does this series either. Cora already has it pretty much figured out. If there are still any guys on the bubble, I suppose this series could be the deciding factor. That said, we are not facing the Guardians in the ALDS. I think Cora already knows who matches up best against the Yankees and the A's.
  2. I don't think of being able to hit well as a pinch hitter as a 'clutch' skill. I do think that some batters might be better at it than others, but I don't think those batters that are good at it can pinch hit at a level that is continually higher than their norm. In other words, there is no 'raising of one's game to an otherworldly level' going on. Papi only had 19 hits in 102 ABs as a pinch hitter. Maybe he did not like pinch hitting. Maybe it's just the randomness of small sample sizes spread out over 20 years.
  3. Agreed. Or even a game where at least one of the teams were playing for something, like the Dodgers or the Oakland game.
  4. I would prefer to Sox go against the A's as well. But my opinion really has more to do with wanting the Yankees eliminated than thinking the A's will be an easier opponent, though I do think our chances would be a little better against the A's.
  5. Yeah, I'm surprised they chose a rather meaningless game.
  6. Being able to hit well as a pinch hitter is not the same as being clutch.
  7. Maybe, maybe not. But is the likelihood that he will hit better than Leon in a key situation very real? Yes.
  8. I've always felt that Holt's true value comes as a super utility player, not as a starter. He could end up being huge in a key pinch hitting situation.
  9. Nobody is suggesting that we don't need or shouldn't sign a good closer, just that one can be signed for cheaper than what Kimbrel will cost.
  10. Here's how the AL playoff teams rank by Pythagorean W-L, and how many games they have over or underplayed that mark. Astros 104-50 -7 Red Sox 99-56 +6 Yankees 93-61 +2 Guardians 93-61 -7 As 91-64 +3 Not that it means much at this point, but the Red Sox have been a bit lucky, while the Astros and the Guardians a bit unlucky.
  11. I don't think Cora is really auditioning guys for the playoff roster anymore. He pretty much knows what he wants to do. “It’s wide open for you guys," Cora said of his bullpen choices. "I have a pretty good idea of where we’re going.”
  12. Oy. One of the beat writers was speculating that Holt has worked his way into being our postseason 1st baseman. Thankfully, Cora is not basing his decisions off of recent and small samples.
  13. Wright needs to come into a clean inning, and Cora needs to have him on a very short leash. Wright will be fine.
  14. Last I heard, Eovaldi will be available in the pen for Game 1, then is likely the Game 4 starter in the ALDS.
  15. Last I heard, Cora was leaning towards having all 3 catchers on the roster.
  16. Just a heads up for anyone who wasn't aware. The Sox are on ESPN tonight, but the game time is 7:00, not the normal 8:00.
  17. Agreed that Pom has to be able to pitch through that, but had Devers made that play, it could have changed the whole tide of that inning and Pom's outing.
  18. Even though they're winning, the Yankees are having a rather tough time with the Os.
  19. Count me in as a JBJ fan. From the very beginning of his big league career, he is one of the guys I pulled the hardest for. It's nice to see him contributing offensively, though I would be a fan either way.
  20. Jeter and Ortiz were simply good hitters. That's all there is to it.
  21. I like how Wright was used in that game as well. It can be nerve wracking, but it can also be very efficient. I would only bring him into the game in a clean inning though.
  22. Yup. Cora said as much about a week ago. He said he would not be making his decisions based on small samples.
  23. I would probably have Workman on the roster. I've always been a Joe Kelly fan, but even I have to say no to him.
  24. Agreed. Let's hope the race between the As and the Yanks goes down to the final game. I think that Cora will likely put his starting line up out there for the final game, regardless of what's going on with the Yankees.
