That's the thing. Most valuable player does not necessarily mean the best player, though it could. It's open to a lot of interpretation. Can a player be valuable to a team that isn't even in playoff contention? Can a DH be more valuable to a team than someone who provides offense and defense? How valuable are those intangibles that don't show up in the numbers? It can be argued that JD has had a very large impact on this team and is more valuable to the team than Mookie. Or maybe JD's impact does not go beyond what he has provided offensively.

Even if there weren't a cliff, even if we didn't have to consider saving money to extend some of our young core, I would not give Kimbrel a 5 year deal for $100 million. No way.

He was so good for the first two months of the season. Then it just seemed to disappear.

I have jury duty next month. I've been trying to think of ways to make myself appear crazy. That's hard to do though, as sane and rational as I am.

As some have pointed out, Kelly might have an edge over some of the other guys just by the fact that he's been with the team the entire season. Plus, he does have his moments of brilliance. I don't currently trust him, but I can see Cora sticking with him. Just keep him on a very short leash.

With a wrist injury, I can't imagine that he'd be able to swing normally in that short a period of time. I'm not the doctor here, but it sounds more like wishful thinking than anything else.

As I've mentioned before, Cora pretty much already knows what direction he's heading in. While Cuevas was very strong last night, I can't see that swaying Cora one way or another. Cora did say he was going to start using Wright in situations where there is traffic on the bases. That idea makes me nervous, but perhaps Wright will be better at stranding those runners than some of our other relievers have been.

Paying Kimbrel $100 mil for 5 years does nothing but steepens the cliff. Just say no.

Cora has a plan. He knows what he's doing in terms of resting/playing guys. Once we clinched the division, his only priority is the postseason. In Cora we trust.

Cora just needs to start that AAA line up every night. Those guys would get the job done.

If Kimbrel will sign for 3 years or less (my preference is 2 years), then great. Otherwise, the Sox need to let him walk. It would be a huge mistake to give Kimbrel a 4-5 year deal.

I've always been a Kelly supporter, but I've lost my trust in him. I don't want him on the playoff roster. That said, you are probably right that he'll be there. I would rather have the 3rd catcher on the roster than the extra reliever. I have no issues with Moreland being on the playoff roster and no doubt that he will be there.
