  1. I get the sentiment for wanting to keep Mookie regardless of the cost. The first half of the contract will be great. Mookie might even end up being worth the contract overall because of his great play during the first part of the contract. But when those albatross years hit...
  2. Let me rephrase that. Mookie would be stupid to pass up Jacko's contract.
  3. There is no simple solution. Something has to give. Not to beat a dead horse, but this is what happens with the 'win at any cost' philosophy. Fortunately for us, it worked. Imagine if we were facing the same situation with no championships to show for it.
  4. That cannot be blamed on the GM.
  5. The GM in 2012, 2014, and 2015 did his job, which is to put together a contending team on paper. And when I say 'on paper', it's not just in the eyes of the computer models. It's also in the eyes of the 'expert analysts' and people who are or were very much involved in the game. I really like our chances of not only making the playoffs this year, but also of repeating as World Series champs. I think almost everyone agrees. If Mookie and JD hit a brick wall for some reason and the Sox don't make the playoffs, are we going to blame Dombrowski for doing a terrible job?
  6. The cliff is real. When I speak of the cliff, I'm not referring to where a team actually finishes. I'm referring to how well a team is projected to do. Random factors, either good or bad, do not affect the cliff. Entering the season, if the Sox are projected to make the playoffs, it is not a cliff year, regardless of what happens. If the Sox are not projected to make the playoffs, then it is a cliff year, regardless of what happens.
  7. Relax Denny. I assure you that you will be happy with the bullpen that Dombrowski constructs for us. Though it just might involve Robertson.
  8. I don't think the limit is so much for this year, but more in terms of how it will affect the next two years.
  9. You are right. By itself, that is not evidence of any new directive. Given Dombrowski's history with the Red Sox, however, I tend to think that Henry is tightening the reigns a bit. Except for the JD signing last year, Dombrowski has acted relatively early in the offseason. When there is a player that Dombrowski wants, he doesn't sit around and wait for the market, including the trade market, to come to him. He acted quickly with Price, Kimbrel, and Sale, He also acted quickly with Moreland, Pearce, and Eovaldi. I'm just speculating, of course.
  10. I think there is, but I think the reigning in for this year is more about the length of the contract, in anticipation of trying to reset in 2020 or, at the latest, 2021.
  11. I 100% believe that we will not enter the season without a great bullpen. Henry is not going to skimp in that area when the rest of the team is so strong.
  12. I really think that if we were not reigning things in, we'd have a closer.
  13. The checkbook was not completely closed. But that's not the same thing as saying that it's completely open.
  14. IMO, the directive from Henry is different this off season. In the past, it's been more along the lines of do whatever it takes to bring us a championship, regardless of cost. This year, it's more along the lines of do your best to limit spending and contract years. If there are no other options, then we'll do what we have to do, but exhaust all other options first. So Henry might not actually have a limit this year, but I do believe the belt is tightening.
  15. Possibly. I just don't think that Dombrowski has the open checkbook that he's had in the past years.
  16. I would guess that Mookie would not be able to refuse that deal, but as a GM, there is no way in the world that I would offer that deal. Part of the team's reasoning for buying out some control years is to be able to get some free agent years at a cheaper rate. It should be a deal where both sides benefit. How are the Sox benefiting from that deal? They are taking all of the risk with no reward. Mookie is getting all of the reward with no risk. My final offer to Mookie would be an 8 year deal from now, meaning a 6 year extension, at $30 mil a year. Throw in a couple of opt outs if necessary. That, to me, is still breaking the bank on a player, but I'm also trying to be realistic.
  17. Maybe Larry Cook was right all along. Maybe Dombrowski has no plan.
  18. The fans deserve a quality product, which they have received every year since the Henry ownership group took over. Henry has been very generous with his wallet. The fans are not entitled to expect Henry to pay to have a superstar at every position, no matter the cost.
  19. The problem with going all out for the 2019 season is that it would further dampen the long term outlook. Chances are, we wouldn't be able to acquire great relievers without either putting more of a financial strain on the team in upcoming years, making the tax reset very difficult, or depleting the farm system even more. Dombrowski went all out in 2016-2018 and it paid off. But, we are now starting to feel the effects on the longer term outlook of the team, both financially and prospects-wise.
  20. You are not alone in having wanted Stanton. I can understand wanting the player. I criticize Dombrowski a lot, but the JD contract is pure gold. In fact, his entire 2018 season was pure gold. He gets an A+ for 2018.
  21. From a business standpoint, it was definitely the right thing to do. From a strictly baseball standpoint, I'm not sure it was the right thing to do, though it's hard to argue with the WS Championship.
  22. I have no doubt that he will improve the BP over what it is now, at least on paper. It could very well be via a trade.
  23. Stanton's contract is insane. I cannot believe that so many people here wanted to trade for him and take on that contract. I will say it again. Just say No to Mookie and a 10 year contract.
  24. The list goes on and on. He was extremely opinionated and liked to run his mouth. He said a lot of stupid stuff, both baseball related against other players and teams and non baseball related. He seemed to have anger issues both on and off the field. IIRC, he was arrested for domestic violence, both against his wife and his children.
