There was also a comment somewhere that Machado is not giving the Yankees a discount. He is reportedly signing with whomever offers him the biggest contract.

I would not. Then again, I would not sign Betts to a 10 year deal either.

We need to build our farm system back up. If we had a strong farm, we could put a quality product on the field and keep the payroll under $206 mil.

I don't know Bell. I personally think there will be a reset in either 2020 or 2021, which is what is holding us up in signing a reliever. Otherwise, as you mentioned, it wouldn't make much sense to re-sign Pearce. But Pearce having a one year contract doesn't affect reset goals for 2020. We'll see. I can't imagine Henry be willing to continue to pay the higher tax penalties. Even the Yankees reset.

I think the Sox will eventually end up going over the next penalty tier this year, whether it be in the offseason or midseason. The team is too good for them not to go that extra step that may push them over the top. That is if the extra step is needed. We may end up being relatively healthy and productive as is. I'm mostly thinking about 2B. But yeah, 2020 definitely feels like the reset year. Sooner or later, the money will catch up to you, no matter how rich a team you are. I am glad that Dombrowski has seemingly decided not to spend big on bullpen contracts.

Probably. OTOH, perhaps being a little more aggressive will keep him from regressing.

Agreed. Perhaps this is part of the reason why Cora wants to move Betts to the 2 hole.

I figured they would blow past the luxury tax limit, but I really figured it would be for either Harper or Machado. Perhaps the Yankees are making sure they will be able to reset again in 1-2 years and are therefore avoiding the mega contract.

I agree with this. I don't want to create any holes trying to plug another, especially when the only hole we have, if you can even call it that, is the bullpen. If the season started today, I'd be good to go with the team as it is. I am 100% against trading Porcello for just about any reason. I would have to be blown away by the reasoning behind trading him. I think Eovaldi's contract is too long, but IMO, re-signing him or another comparable pitcher was our #1 priority this offseason. So far this offseason, Dombrowski has done a commendable job.

I would agree. But what if Betts could be even better? Yikes! I trust that the Red Sox and Mookie know what they're doing.

It's not that they have given up on Tulo, it's that they didn't have much confidence in him to begin with. Depth and insurance.

Our situation is not in the least bit dire. As things stand right now, we are not only strong contenders, but IMO, the favorites heading into the season. Not strong favorites, and it won't be an easy road by any means, but we are currently the best team in baseball. Besides, we all know that Dombrowski is not finished. We are only going to get better. Unless Dombrowski does something stupid.

I found this tweet interesting. While Betts was more aggressive last year, he is apparently still letting too many good pitches go by. @redsoxstats Strong feeling there is a big recommitment to hitter aggressiveness on pitches over the middle coming in spring training. Even in steamrolling, passiveness crept in. It's the next big next step in the JDM to Betts tutelage for sure. Betts went from 57% to 61%, still 324th/336.

It depends on who the closer and the prospects are. I would be less shocked, for sure.

Agents may have short memories, but what about the players? My understanding about the way arb hearings go is that the team is listing every little reason they can to show why the player is not worth what the player thinks he is worth. That can't sit well with the player. I'm sure the Sox had the extension in mind when deciding to avoid an arb hearing this year.
