  1. I found this tweet interesting. While Betts was more aggressive last year, he is apparently still letting too many good pitches go by. @redsoxstats Strong feeling there is a big recommitment to hitter aggressiveness on pitches over the middle coming in spring training. Even in steamrolling, passiveness crept in. It's the next big next step in the JDM to Betts tutelage for sure. Betts went from 57% to 61%, still 324th/336.
  2. It depends on who the closer and the prospects are. I would be less shocked, for sure.
  3. And yikes. What a crazy amount. Mookie is already set for life. He doesn't need the 10 year mega deal. LOL
  4. Agents may have short memories, but what about the players? My understanding about the way arb hearings go is that the team is listing every little reason they can to show why the player is not worth what the player thinks he is worth. That can't sit well with the player. I'm sure the Sox had the extension in mind when deciding to avoid an arb hearing this year.
  5. The Devil Rays are trying to make some noise.
  6. The Astros were the team to beat in 2018. They were actually 6 games better than the Red Sox by Pythagorean W-L. And the playoffs are largely a crapshoot. No matter how good a team is, you can never discount the randomness that is such a large part of the game of baseball. As sk has said, the Sox could be a better team this year and yet win fewer games.
  7. I wonder how much of that is posturing. Not that I think Kimbrel's asking price in years will come down enough for us to sign him, but I still don't believe Dombrowski will go with the 'throw crap against the wall' BP strategy. If he does, I'll be shocked, as I just posted.
  8. Isn't that the truth? It's amazing how many Yankees players fall into that category. LOL
  9. Is Dombrowski going to go cheap on the BP? Color me shocked if that happens. Not necessarily disappointed, but shocked.
  10. I am sure the union frowns upon players taking any kind of significant discount. As far as those who have blown through millions of dollars, if someone can blow away $200 mil and end up broke, do you really think that extra $20 mil is going to be the difference?
  11. I don't know if the projections have been updated recently or not, but a few weeks ago, the Red Sox led all of baseball in Steamer WAR projections for 2019. Not that it means a whole lot, but I stand by my opinion that the Sox are still the team to beat, regardless of whatever improvements the Yankees have made and whatever 'weakening' the Red Sox have incurred. And despite what Jacko says.
  12. LOL No, no, no. The Wild Card game is, and always will be, a playoff game. Yankees fans are having a difficult time dealing with the Red Sox being WS Champions. I like it.
  13. We have some players that will likely not perform as well as they did in 2018. We have other players that should perform better than they did last year. For the most part, it should be a wash, assuming fairly good health. Even if we are a little bit worse overall, which I'm not saying is the case, we are still the team to beat. We were that good last year.
  14. Yes, but it's all relative, isn't it? I'm thinking $20,000 more a year probably means more to me than $3 mil a year (for 10 years) means to someone already making $220 mil.
  15. Voit, like Boone, is a doofus. Advantage Red Sox.
  16. Boston Red Sox - World Series Champions End of debate.
  17. I agree. Thank goodness Dombrowski does not seem willing to give Kimbrel a 4 year deal.
  18. LOL Some of the stuff you come up with.
  19. That's what I'm saying sk. There are reasons other than money to take (or keep) a certain job, yet most players go for the biggest contract.
  20. So, the Yankees can start the season with less than ideal players at SS and 1B, but the Sox starting the season (maybe) with a less than ideal closer is going to doom the team?
  21. Says the King of Hype and Hope.
  22. Agreed. 2/24 is about what I'd be willing to sign him for. It may not be realistic, but it's what he should get.
  23. I prefer the Yanks to be the favorites going into the season. Let them get Machado. They don't scare me.
  24. Kimbrel and Kelly combined for a total of 2.2 fWAR last season. They will be replaced by someone. It's just not as big a deal as you're making it out to be.
