  1. Hmmm. I wonder if the team would have won the WS this year without LaRussa.
  2. One of the things about analytics is being able to get the players and the coaches to buy into it. If they don't believe in it, then they tend not to work as well. Relief pitchers have traditionally operated with a set role in mind. They want to know what their role is and know what inning they are coming into. I get that. Now the task is to change that mentality into the idea of 'relief aces', for lack of a better term. I think bullpens are headed in that direction. That said, one difficulty in that approach comes with getting relievers warming up in time and also with not having them get up and down too many times.
  3. Analytics, analytics, analytics. Thank you Brian Bannister.
  4. Normally, I could agree with this thinking, but the 2019 Red Sox are built to win in a way that we may not see again for several years.
  5. Obviously, you are a wise man. You make some very good points. During those albatross years, it's very difficult for most teams to eat the remaining contracts, and it does put the team into not only a financial bind, but also a managerial bind. I keep thinking that the insanity of contracts has to hit a limit soon, yet they just keep getting bigger and bigger. I don't like it.
  6. Tulo is not going to be a 5 WAR player. That said, it's possible that he could be a 2 WAR player. If we had any kind of need for him, and had the space for him, I'd take him for the major league minimum.
  7. I keep hoping that the GMs will stop offering these ludicrous contracts. Haven't seen it happen yet. I just read that the Nats gave Harper a new offer, one that is 'significantly higher' than the 10 yrs/$300 mil proposal. Sheesh.
  8. Go stat geeks!
  9. I got mine for Christmas.
  10. But it also doesn't make much sense to save your best reliever for a situation that never comes. I would hate to lose a game in the 7th or 8th inning with my best reliever sitting on the bench.
  11. I am on board with most of what you say.
  12. The best way to go when building a bullpen.
  13. Amen to all of that Moon. Let's win another WS in 2019 and put the icing on the cake!
  14. I don't know if he'll sign an extension before reaching free agency or not, but I do think he'll remain with the Red Sox one way or the other. Dombrowski will have to get creative with the front loading and opt outs.
  15. I get the idea that people don't want the owners pocketing the money, and they'd rather see it going to the players. With Henry, I feel like he spends more than an ample amount on payroll, so that hasn't been an issue for me. Ideally, he throw some of that money back to the fans in the way of cheaper tickets, but I know that's not happening. I just keep hoping for those players who aren't all about the money. I understand that Mookie (or any player) has the right for to go for the most money. I just find it disheartening.
  16. Good to hear Moon. Don't overdo it.
  17. I think he's just waiting as long as possible to give Jacko some false hope.
  18. As I told you before, relax. Stop sweating bullets. Dombrowski will get you a closer that you will be pleased with.
  19. I agree that going with Brasier or Barnes would not be devastating, but I will be highly surprised if Dombrowski doesn't add a known closer. I just can't see that happening.
  20. Not really surprised, but I'm beginning to wonder if Harper is going to regret turning down the reported offer of 10 yrs/$300 mil.
  21. Reigning World Champions. Enough said.
  22. Back to back to back to back. Enough said.
  23. I don't think that Betts is in any hurry to leave Boston. At the same time, I get the impression that he's going to follow the money, so there is no sense of 'loyalty', or whatever you want to call it, holding him here. If the Red Sox give him the deal that he wants, he'll stay.
  24. If we say goodbye to the players you mentioned, that is several more holes that are going to need to be filled. Again, tough to do when you're tying up $32 mil to a single player and you don't have the cost-controlled players to balance it out. As several posters have said, it will be interesting to see how Dombrowski handles the next couple of off seasons. I completely get why people want to keep Betts at any cost. I really, really, really want to keep him too. I just can't see paying him that kind of money to do so.
