  1. You should be wrecking the crappy teams, and sadly, there are a lot of them. Getting your guys back will no doubt help you in the playoffs.
  2. I am more of a believer in the lefty/righty thing and the comfort thing than you are. If/when they go to the 3 batter minimum for a relief pitcher, the lefty/righty thing becomes even more important.
  3. I'm sure the coaches are telling him that, and he can see the results he's getting. I guess it's easier said than done, though. He is the player that I have probably pulled the hardest for since he was first called up.
  4. I'm with you on the "It ain't over till it's over" part!
  5. Not me. I would 100% sign Eovaldi over Kimbrel in that situation every time.
  6. I think in most pens, the #6 and 7 guys are a little iffy. I think some of the problem has been the slow start that the starters got off too, along with injuries to Price and Eovaldi, both of which required to use the pen in ways that he didn't want to. I agree that we could use another arm, but I would not go overboard in getting one.
  7. It's interesting that I seem to be the only one praising Dombrowski for his BP building strategy. Well done, Dave. It might not be working as well as people would like it to, but it also has not been nearly as bad as many are making it out to be. Even if Dombrowski had spent a lot of money on the pen, chances are good that we'd need one or two pen arms for depth and reinforcement by the trade deadline. It's no different this year.
  8. Dombrowski did not get emotional. Just stop. If he signed Eovaldi and Pearce because he became emotional over them, he has no business being in a baseball FO, much less being President of Baseball Ops.
  9. Because the role and title of 'closer' are overrated.
  10. Well, cost is always an issue with me. But of course, if we could get him for a cheap, one year deal, I'd take him.
  11. It's always been this way in the history of the game only because everyone accepted it as the way it should be. It doesn't mean it's correct.
  12. Someone who more or less lives and dies with the home run.
  13. I just don't get why he doesn't use the opposite field approach more often from the get go. He has good power that way, and seems to break out of his slumps when he does so. I don't get it. I have never supported the idea of trading Jackie, so this is not meant to knock him. I'm just looking for a legitimate reason why he struggles for long periods of time, then it's like he suddenly realizes he should stop trying to pull the ball.
  14. Cora: "This sounds bad or whatever, but that was the worst-case scenario. We were down pitching-wise, and we kept scoring. You feel like, 'Oh, God, we have a shot. Like Tito used to say, you can't be chasing wins. If you do that, you'll pay the price the next 7 days." Cora and Francona, cut from the same cloth. This is hard to accept sometimes, but it's the truth. You can't 'chase wins' in the regular season.
  15. Yup, Yankees are still scared of the Red Sox.
  16. I'll tell you the same thing I told you last year. The chances of you playing better or even maintaining the .731 winning % that you had in May are slim to none, whether you get your starters back or not. So while it sounds good that you guys are playing like this and will be even better when Judge and Stanton return, chances are very good that you won't win as many games as you're winning with the B Squad.
  17. The #3 hitter comes up more often than any other slot with 2 outs and no one on, largely because of the 1st inning. That is the worst situation, in terms of run scoring, for your best hitter to come up to bat in. You can only play for the big first inning if your #1 and #2 guys get on base, in which case the #4 guy will get up in the 1st inning anyway. Once again, though, it really doesn't make much of a difference.
  18. I agree that we could use some depth reinforcement. I don't agree with those who say that we need someone like Kimbrel as a closer.
  19. I am a Merloni fan. I think he is usually spot on with his posts, often times saying the things that no one else wants to say. That said, I don't necessarily agree that I'd rather have Porcello over Eovaldi. I don't necessarily disagree either. I'm glad we re-signed Eovaldi, but I'd like to keep Porcello as well.
  20. I don't think there's a contradiction here. If your high OBP guys in the 1 and 2 slots get on base in the first inning, the #4 guy will get to bat in the 1st inning with at least one runner on base. And they have a better chance of getting on base than the other batters. But if they fail to get on base, you have your best hitter leading off the 2nd inning, which is better than having him hit with 2 outs and no one on.
  21. Also: Red Sox Stats‏ @redsoxstats 25m25 minutes ago The Red Sox bullpen has 1.6 shutdowns to every meltdown, which ranks 16th, their win probability added is 0.86, which ranks 12th, and a 4.12 FIP, which ranks 10th. Middle of the road. Problem is the Yankees, Astros, Rays, Twins, and Guardians have each been considerably better. I think we were in a very similar situation last year - middle of the pack.
  22. Chris Cotillo‏Verified account @ChrisCotillo 3h3 hours ago I think the preconceived notions people had about the bullpen make nights like tonight look way worse. The Sox could use another arm, though. This plan leans too heavily on Barnes. Like I've said, there's 4 A-team RPs (Barnes, Brasier, Workman, Walden), Hembree in the middle, then B-team: Lakins/Velazquez. If someone he trusts is unavailable, not much depth. ^^Spot on tweet by Cotillo.
  23. Red Sox Stats‏ @redsoxstats 35m35 minutes ago When Brasier throws his fastball or slider, and they stay out of the middle of the zone (i.e., fastballs up, sliders down), batters are 3 for 51 against him this year. When they leak to the middle of the zone batters are 9 for 18 with 4 home runs and a double. Location, location, location.
  24. I was actually leaning more towards neither.
  25. Not really.
