  1. Sale's peripheral stats are very good. He is pitching a lot better than his ERA indicates.
  2. With this philosophy, you need a lot of depth. You keep throwing arms out there until you find the ones that work. They are out there for cheap. Also, you need your starters to not necessitate the misuse and overuse of the pen.
  3. I would not do it.
  4. There is speculation that Betts is going to be shopped around in the off season, which many posters now seem to be on board with now. Last year, it was the majority opinion that Betts must be re-signed at any cost. How quickly opinions change. LOL If Dombrowski is a goner, I hope the team brings in a Theo protege.
  5. So, we are okay with the way the plays are tracked for Inside Edge, but not for UZR or DRS?
  6. True. That day is likely coming eventually.
  7. We have a couple of reliable arms out there in Barnes and Workman. They can't help that they have been misused, due to no fault of Cora. I do agree that Dombrowski failed in not adding more BP depth during the season.
  8. One thing to keep in mind with defensive stats is that it takes a very large sample to somewhat stabilize, like 3 years worth of data. When you look at a player's dWAR for this season, it would be like judging a player based on just one or two months of hitting stats.
  9. The missile ball might be affecting other pitchers as well, but has any other team had almost a complete collapse of their pitching staff like the Sox have? The Astros, Rays, and Guardians all seem to be pitching rather well. As far as the team having a philosophy of not challenging hitters, I'm not buying that at all. I don't believe for a minute that that is the reason the Sox let the Kimbrel walk. I don't believe that they would encourage their pitchers to nibble. They've been trying for years to get ERod to be more efficient with his pitches.
  10. Two things: 1. It was a short contract. You can live with underperformance for a one or two year deal. 2. He helped bring us a WS title. That makes it worth it, much like the decimation of the farm. So, in a strict and literal sense, no, he wasn't worth it. In a broader sense, the answer is yes. I liked the Moreland signing when it happened, and I still like it. I would do it all over again. That is my kind of signing.
  11. And still, the Yankees haven't won anything.
  12. Truth. Game thread mojo buster!
  13. I have always thought Cashman is a very good GM. I felt like he was strong armed by father Steinbrenner and Levine into making moves that he wouldn't have made on his own, but now he is finally allowed more power in his decisions. I hate to say it, but I like what Cashman has done with his team recently. Very Theo-esque.
  14. These guys are also very much old school. They don't like analytics because they go against much of what they believe, which is okay. Change is slow. How long did it take managers to stop sac bunting so often? How long has it taken for managers to get away from the slappy, bat handler low OBP batter in the #2 hole to finally putting one of their best hitters in that spot. Just a few short years ago, a manager would have been crucified for batting Trout in the #2 hole. Today, it's very widely accepted.
  15. You have broken my heart.
  16. These are the guys who also believes a fast ball rises. Just sayin'.
  17. The Yankees were in a different situation than we were. If the Sox had a 10 game lead on the division, I don't think that not adding anyone at the deadline would seem as disheartening. Again, it might not have anything to do with anything, just throwing it out there. Also, I'm not sure I can give the doofus that much credit. LOL
  18. Also, I think Sale needs this for himself. He's a fierce competitor. I don't think it would do him much good to stew on how his season ended if they shut him down right now (last night's game notwithstanding).
  19. I read recently that NESN viewership is down a fair amount. I don't recall the exact numbers.
  20. IMO, it's too early to do that. While the Sox have an uphill battle, they are not out of it yet.
  21. If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull****. Works well for me.
  22. I get the whole Manfred Missile thing. Wouldn't that likely be a problem that affects pitchers throughout baseball, and not just the Sox pitchers? There is something going on with our staff beyond any adjustments to the baseball. The great JoeyB posted this on another site: The drop off in performance after about 2 months seems to support the idea that other teams have adjusted to our game plan, which means that game plan now needs to be readjusted.
  23. It could be that the pitching staff has not adjusted to the new baseballs. But it is also not a good idea to become too predictable. If opposing teams know what your strategy is, they will likely have more success against you.
  24. Sale is probably the last person who would blame any of his problems on who is catching him. He knows the onus is on himself. That said, some pitchers just have a greater comfort and confidence level with certain catchers. Sale has that with Leon. As you said, there's no harm in letting Leon catch Sale because Vaz cannot catch every day.
