  1. I think Sale needed that start more than we did. From all accounts, he's been beating himself up over pitching so poorly. I'm happy for him.
  2. Have to give credit where credit is due. That was an awesome catch, especially getting so close to the wall.
  3. You may not like him, but that doesn't mean he's overrated. He most definitely is the best player in the game today.
  4. No time like the present to start our extreme playoff run. Let's go!
  5. Just Jacko being Jacko.
  6. Yes, I know. I am talking about adding a reliever (or two) in the last few days before the deadline. I think that virtually everyone was expecting that Dombrowski would add some bullpen depth. Cora even stated that he would be very surprised if they did not. Typically, when a GM makes a deadline move, the consensus is that the FO is sending the message to the players that they believe in the team. Does not adding anybody send the opposite message? I don't know. I'm not saying that this is the reason the team lost 8 in a row and 9 out of 10, just speculating. Everything went so well for them last year. This team has not responded well to adversity at all.
  7. I wonder how many of those 700+ extra pitches are foul balls? I haven't looked, but I get the impression that our pitchers are getting fewer swings and misses this year. Even when the opposition doesn't make hard contact, they are able to foul off several pitches, driving the pitch count up.
  8. And then the FO did not add any players before the deadline. They didn't sell, but they also didn't buy, even for a bit player. I do have to wonder what kind of impact this had on the players.
  9. I am optimistic, but I'm also a stats person. I think peripheral stats give a better picture of the true performance level of a pitcher over stats like ERA. They are also better indicators of future performance than ERA is. Sale, Price, and even Porcello to a lesser degree, are due for some positive regression. So yes, I am optimistic about their future performance. As far as Cashner goes, I posted when he was first signed that he was outperforming his peripherals and that we should not be surprised to see him return to his norms.
  10. Better than they were in their primes? No. But better than this year? Definitely they can be.
  11. This management team often says something that they go back on a week or two later. It makes them look desperate, which I'm sure they are, but it's not a good look.
  12. Not to be the bearer of bad news, but Workman is far outperforming his peripherals, to a level that cannot be sustained. He's been awesome so far. Hopefully, he can continue for the remainder of the season. But don't be surprised when he turns back into a pumpkin.
  13. Vazquez had an interesting and very blunt comment about why our pitchers are getting hit so hard. He said that the opposing hitters know what's coming. The Sox basically have not changed their game plan at all from 2018, mainly with how many high fast balls they throw. In 2018, they had great success with it. They stuck with the same plan this year, but the plan is not working at all because opposing team know what the Sox are doing. Hello? Are they just now figuring this out? With the mounds of data available to all teams, adjustments to the game plan should have been made a long time ago. Somebody, Bannister or not, has failed miserably at his/her job. Probably several somebodies.
  14. The concept of the Opener is catching on. More and more team seem to be using it. I don't like it, but it may be something that's here to stay for a while.
  15. Tauchman's season is virtually over as of today. I just picked him up on my fantasy team.
  16. LOL Good stuff. Baseball is such an awesome game.
  17. So, you don't think that having your starters regularly get deeper into games helps the pen's effectiveness?
  18. A GM has to let give the manager the autonomy to manage the way he wants to for the most part. Everything Cora did last year worked like a charm? Why would Dombrowski suddenly tell Cora how to manage? Your last sentence makes no sense at all.
  19. I more or less agree with everything here. Porcello likely won't be back, but I do expect our starting staff to do a much better job than what they've done so far this year.
  20. I don't expect a whole lot of change to players or staff. I bet Dombrowski makes some bullpen acquisitions. LOL I just hope he doesn't overreact to this year and make a mistake with a large contract. I have never felt like we should offer Betts a humongous contract, but I wouldn't trade him before the deadline, and only then if we have no shot.
  21. The Yankees were built on the strength of their pen though, not their rotation. The Sox were built on the strength of their rotation who was supposed to carry a mediocre pen. When I just 2-3 weeks ago, the Sox pen had already thrown 50+ more innings than they had last year at the same point, and it hasn't gotten any better since then. You cannot overuse and misuse a pen and expect them to be good.
  22. Atta boy Jacko, get your excuses set up early.
  23. SoxHop is back! (Good to see you!) The turnaround starts tonight!
  24. There is a lot of blame to go around, I'm sure, but IMO, Henry and Dombrowski are not at fault. You really can't ask Henry to do more than he has since he took over ownership. Dombrowski assembled a great team on paper. That's all he can do. This is on the players, mostly the starting rotation, who are simply not performing up to their ability levels. Does Cora have something to do with that? Levangie? Restgate? Strange scheduling, beginning with the 11 game road trip? Possibly, on all counts. But the ultimate responsibility falls on the players.
