    I lean towards your view of things. It's a matter of time until Story gets shut down for one thing or another, and I am not expecting a great (or even good) season from him regardless. Mayer will be the starting SS sooner than we suspect I believe.

    Yup. Nowhere near. But he has the potential to be elite out there, especially as they are now anchoring him in CF.

    These things are subjective of course, but I don't believe Beni was overrated (at least nowhere near to the extreme you seem to), even if Duran is the better all round fielder. Betts is by some distance better than Abreu and JBJ was one of the best we've ever seen at it. I love Rafaela and am higher on him than most, if not all judging by this post season discussion, but he is not in JBJ's league until he proves it. And he can only do that given time. So for now, given the choice, I take '18 and don't spend more than half a second wasting time on the decision. It'll be fun to see how I feel about it in a year or two.

    I'd say Rafaela has a long long way to go to prove he can be as good a defensive CFer as Bradley. For me, right now, '18 is clearly the better defensive outfield. But we may feel different about it in a couple of years.

    It feels more and more to me like it's Chapman with the 9th. His until/unless he loses it. That'll be...fun!

    I'd have him work 1B, too. If for no other reason that if Casas (hardly a stretch) goes down we have an inexperienced Devers (or Romy) at the position we could call on and not a lot else.

    My feeling is that they want to keep him at SS and sending him down to get some reps at AAA, not least in case Story breaks down again, makes all the sense in the world. But the more he keeps impressing, the more he keeps forcing himself into the picture...

    Way to small a sample size and can't learn too much from ST, but if he is trending towards better plate discipline/contact, that contract is going to be an absolute steal. Really looking forward to watching the kid this year.

    Yup, Yoshida is homeless. As I've been saying for a while - I don't think he plays much LF at all and he isn't getting many DH starts. We'd give him away today if we could. One of Bloom's biggest mistakes, and not even with hindsight as the reporting at the time was one of shock at the price, and talk of us going not far over double over what would have been needed, bidding against ourselves, etc. Devers starting with the sore shoulders has been a blessing for us in terms of how easy it is to now slot and keep Bregman at 3rd.

    I think you're reading that wrong, I think Hamilton is our utility guy and Campbell is the favourite for the start at 2nd base, though Mayer is seriously making noise.

    I think they'll go with Abreu. Cora has said he;l b ready by opening day and they obviously love his D. Really can't call what they'll do with Anthony, though he should be on the opening day roster.

    He's certainly making himself hard to ignore. They've got the out in that they want him to get some seasoning at AAA as he didn't make an appearance there, but as the pitching starts to matter towards the latter part of ST, he's still finding hits and he's silky smooth on defence. Maybe he could still edge it.

    I'm pretty convinced that Campbell is the starting 2B for us come Texas. Mayer is going down. Anthony, I can't make up my mind what they're going to do with him. He should be up. I have a feeling he'll be joining Mayer.

    For differing reasons all of the big 3 could start in AAA and nobody would question the decision. For that reason, I wouldn't be shocked to see a number of odd choices on our early roster to get us to another year of control on each.

    Exactly this. It always catches me out how much stock people put on ST numbers. Every year, people keep thinking they're witnessing the birth of a new superstar. The same guy that's been in the league for 7 years scratching to make a living.

    We're nowhere near making those decisions yet. We're just over a 3rd of the way through ST, 🤯

    None of this is new news. The Casas thing has been obvious and out there for months. That said, I don't think Breslow has done anything that virtually every other exec does, too, which is to not state 'yes we're really quite open to dumping one of our guys'. Doesn't lead to a very promising leverage situation.

    Nice to see you on the Raf in CF train at last! I agree with you also about people getting overexcited about Mayer or Campbell at the moment - ST results count for little this early in. A lot of pitchers are working on one specific/motion this early, and hitters know that and can often get inflated numbers because of it. Alternatively hitters are also working on things, and sometimes take a while to find their rhythm. ~Most teams know who the majority of their 26 are, with a few positions up for grabs. The management will make their decisions on a whole host of things, least of all if a guy goes 4 for 4, or 1 for 11 in early ST. There's a few different directions they may want to go yet, but inevitably, injuries will likely get involved to solidify things in the end.

    It's certainly very possible that's what we go for.

    I'd love us to trade Yoshida, but see it as unlikely almost in the extreme at this point in time. I don't want us to lose Abreu as well however. For something special yes, not for 1 year of Cease.

    Just listening to an interview with Story - I'm desperate for him to have a healthy year ahead. Not just because it'll help us enormously, but I can't imagine how frustrating the last few years must be to a guy so naturally talented at his fielding position. He really deserves a break.

    I'd say there is very little chance we sign him. We'd have several big contracts on board and a core that'll need extending. Just not an important enough position for the outlay.

    What this all means for Vaughn Grissom remains to be seen, but he’s been upbeat early in camp about finding ways to make himself versatile, whether that be taking reps at first base or in the outfield. Grissom is noticeably stronger and smoked a 100 mph line drive to right field off Aroldis Chapman in batting practice last week. Jen McCaffrey. Interesting to see Grissom attempting to put himself in the 1st base picture.
