  1. I'm on the side of thinking trading Devers was the right thing to do. I was really annoyed with his attitude and disrespect to his teammates (you don't have to claim this was a smear job - it was there for everyone to see out of the horses mouth), and have no issues with the decision taken (even if I am annoyed how it got to that point) but come on, saying we got this right because he isn't tearing the cover off the ball in a 2 week spell, and claiming the Sox are off and running while only being 2 games above .500 after beating up on two awful teams is as premature as it gets.
  2. There were some interesting comments from play-by-play broadcaster Will Flemming last night. Mentioned that the players were over the Devers trade, that the move was governed almost entirely by the need to reset the culture and showing the younger players that there is accountability as a teammate, and most shockingly of all, he said he was there with Will Clark (Giants FO) to see Raffy take grounders at 1st base on his 2nd day with the Giants, and Raffy didn't turn up. Mentioned that there are those in the Giants org that aren't sure what they have with yet, as in they know he'll hit homers, but wondering if this is this who he is. He also mentioned that there are huge moves coming. Seemed to lean into the speculation Duran is the one that could be going. Hinted that Chaman wouldn't be among the moves, which I found interesting. Well worth a listen.
  3. It's ridiculously early (and pointless) to ask this question now.
  4. If we're buyers, I think I'd reverse this in terms of order, while trying to add a power bat (unlikely).
  5. I agree with this, but the very best on the market? I don't see your Diamondbacks, Marlins, Rangers, etc pushing in the prospects for a Chapman. Chances are, much like us, there is a few places that need fixing before emptying the farm on a rental at closer.
  6. They're also 6-17 against the Jays, Tigers, Mariners and Brewers. This idea we beat the best teams and lose to the worst is a fallacy.
  7. If you're a Dodgers/Jays/Tigers, etc. Considering the cost involved - it's not what you target a couple of games out of the last wildcard spot and with a very consistently .500 team.
  8. The game threads are full of people wailing and crying that their team isn't delivering perfect baseball in every moment of the game. It's pointless taking any notice of what people say during a game - they aren't able to regulate their emotions. But either way, it wasn't long ago that reporters were saying that the Sox were frustrated with Rafaela for swinging too early in counts, and not taking pitches. He's looked better at the plate recently but his walk rate is still abysmal and he needs to keep his hitting up constantly or his value drops fast, so it's not like there weren't concerns. And I say this as someone who thought his value was good whatever. I love the guy, but people questioning his bat had every right to do so. It's still not a topic that is finished with.
  9. He's got a lot of stuff right so far.
  10. I've always been a big Rafaela fan and thought his contract was worth it for what we were getting even if what we got last season was his level, but calling people that doubted him idiots is a bit much, especially with hindsight. He had shown little with the bat.
  11. It's not about giving up on it now, but making what is a sensible decision at the deadline if we're still under .500. This team might sneak in this year (I don't see it), but next year looks like it could be very exciting with the right additions. Some of those additions will need to come through trades.
  12. It's so far lining up to be the 2nd best season of his career. And one nobody seen coming off the back of the last 6 seasons. Which just adds to my point.
  13. Bell is right in that the next few weeks will tell us one way or another. Who knows, maybe we sweep these guys today, sweep the Rockies and take 3 out of 4 from the Rays, setting us up for the crazy schedule after All Star break. My guess is not, and we'll be under .500 by the time the deadline comes by.
  14. 2.5 games out from the last wild card spot while playing .500 baseball, really isn't that close. Do you think .500 baseball gets us in? Because I don't see us winning much above .500. And our all star closer is having the season of his life at 37. There is hay to be made in that sunshine.
  15. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing a month or so ago, but after spending time thinking about it, what's more logical? That the Sox can beat the top teams but struggle against the poor? Or that they're just inconsistent (or consistently infuriating, whatever you prefer), and actually, the first half schedule is was easier than the second half and so we can't take any real data from a run of 12 games. Also, while we took 2 out of 3 from Cincy that were (barely) over 500, we then lost to the Jays. Which is right on brand - .500 baseball for the last 2/3 years. I really don't see why we should be expecting too much more the rest of the season. And if that is the case - we should sell everything we can and try and make sure this is the last .500 season for a while.
  16. I hope I'm wrong but I don't buy this latest run. They're not playing great teams. The run after the all star break (and the Ray's before it) will tell us plenty.
  17. I get that. But alternatively I'm not sure they have the winning percentage in them to make the post season and Chapman is having a crazy outlier of a season that teams will likely vastly overpay for. Sometimes you take the opportunities when they present themselves.
  18. I'd love us to be able to get Jared Jones. I think them selling him cheap is a fantasy though. They're not challenging, what stress have they got forcing them to move him right now?
  19. I've mentioned it two or three times in other threads this past week that DD was on Starksville last week stating that the only thing off the table for him at the deadline is moving starting pitching as he needs it all. So, unless we blow him away, option 1 is going to be tough. Duran and Chapman is a meaty offer, but I don't think it's the one. I've thought for a little while, you send him with someone for Eldridge and sort out this long term 1B issue once and for all.
  20. Sorry I meant your original trade, for the aforementioned reason DD doesn't want to trade pitching. Can't comment on your adjustment as I'm not familiar with the CF prospect so can't judge it.
  21. I would definitely do the one you mentioned above, but I think it unlikely Phillies would.
  22. I have a pretty hard time seeing Milwaukee giving up Hoskins for Hamilton. The 2nd trade feels possible but unlikely, too. Not least because DD was only saying on Starkville last week that he isn't planning on moving any of his pitchers this trade deadline as they're going to need them all.
