  1. I hear Robinson Cano might be available.
  2. Compagnon is and has been a very prolific author. I haven't read anything of his in over 20 years, but I recall it as being smart, lucid, and not overly polemical (in contrast to many of his crazed French contemporaries, whom I confess I rather liked in those days). So I'd say, go for it! (And by all means let me know what you think.)
  3. You must not be a coastal sailor!!! They are absolutely still useful for navigation.
  4. Your memory is either amazing or skewed! I didn't realize Plante was ever on the Bruins (I remember him mostly from the early 60s). But he only played 8 games for Boston (late late in his career, after one retirement, in 1973). Or so Wiki claims. I was lucky to move into a crappy apartment in 1971, whose only virtue was that the previous owner had left a functioning TV cable; so I got to watch all the Bruins games that season, right to the Stanley Cup. (Here is where memory fails; I distinctly remember the famous Bobby Orr series winning goal--the flying swan goal. But that, alas, history says took place a year or two earlier.)
  5. I believe this is only two DUIs. The case just filed in October was for the DUI in February (which would be his second). But as a 73-year-old stoner, I agree with your following post that we should let this young man learn from his mistakes and take this as an opportunity for personal growth.
  6. Hey! Careful what you say about hockey goalies!! (Maybe we USED to look like Gump Worsley, but I don't think goalies in the past 40 years or so look like that.)
  7. (I think you missed the reference to a previous poster here.)
  8. He owned his part in the cheating scandal, and more important, did not throw anyone under the bus (unlike nearly everyone else involved), he's smart and he treated everyone--players, fans and reporters--with respect (some posters--not me in this case-- brought politics into the thread--gee, I wonder if there is an analogy there ...)
  9. I have been learning and forgetting useless crap all my adult life. But for once, I am really glad that I have absolutely no idea what any of this is!
  10. As every crappy golfer like myself knows only too well.
  11. OK. Thanks. (And on Notin's remark above, does this mean that in order to get that spot open, they will have to DFA him in the spring?). I guess what I don't understand is why, if the Sox and DP agree that he can't play this year, but he will get paid, they don't just DFA/retire him now?
  12. Just read that they put him on 40-man roster. Given that he's not going to play this year, nor is he going to give up the money they owe him, what's the purpose or what are the implications of this?
  13. Fair enough. When I read statements like those LaRussa made repeatedly questioning the 'sincerity' of anyone with opposing political views, you're right--it's hard for me to resist raising an objection. But I'll try. (What I would really prefer to do is find the youtube of LaRussa going ballistic at some minor league players--[did he manage there? or was it spring training?] --because the pitcher didn't check for signs on a 3-0 pitch. "Couldn't you just look at the m*f*cking catcher for a m*f*cking sign just to pretend that you might throw a m*th*rf*cking curve ball? ..." Ah, those were the days!)
  14. Well, nothing is 'necessary'. But his politics (including past statements on Kaepernik) was one of the issues raised by the reporters concerning whether he was in touch with younger players.
  15. Looks to me that Reinsdorf's move has more to do with his fear of political stances that don't reflect his own. Like others who hold these anti-protest, flag-waving views (Roger Goodell, Jerra Jones, DT, Brett Favre), he has an absolutely flawless military-service record to back it up.
  16. Come on. They could have had Brett Favre ...
  17. I think Chicago just prevented the Red Sox from being accused of making the dumbest sports decision since trading away Ruth. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/30220736/why-tony-la-russa-sincerely-curious-choice-white-sox-manager
  18. It's good to praise TB's success. Their popularity, however, seems largely restricted to pretend GM's. THe average attendance of a MLB game is 28K. Tampa Bay? Half that. Why is that? (Is this DD's fault too?)
  19. ? Not sure what you mean here. What it says about baseball is that players are getting what owners consider market value for their services, which they absolutely should get. If players made less, owners would pocket more. There seems to be a collective illusion among some fans (not you), that if players made less, why then seats to games would cost $3, there would be plenty of them available on game day, and one's favorite team would win the WS every other year.
  20. Why? He thought he would be with them I assume because he thought they would offer him market value, which they did not. You may not agree with what he claims is his thinking on this, but there is nothing disingenuous about it. (Also, he seems to be trying not to criticize the organization he just left--actually, the organization that traded him away in order to get under the luxury tax. Many RS fans, by contrast, vilify him for not taking 50-100 million less than what the market proved he could get. But I have yet to hear a good reason offered why he should have done that. The Boston winters? The drivers? The beaches? The club life?)
  21. He will answer, as he should, "Pay me what you contracted to pay me." Hardly matters whether he's released or kept on the roster, does it? THe RS owe him that money, will and should have to pay it, and it will and should count against the cap, right? (Or wait ... if they release him, and never put him on the roster, does that money count? or is he in Rusney Castillo land?)
  22. Yup. It is. I rooted for all those guys. Ellsbury as well, and many others. Even Roger ... sort of. I really don't understand the animosity fans have against former players on their team. (Let's hope fans don't embarrass themselves by turning on Mookie.). It seems to be worse in basketball: I'm a Clippers fan and I find the hatred of players like Blake Griffin and Chris Paul--players who put the team on the map-- truly staggering.
  23. Let's hope we remember this Mookie better than the other one, who (I am reminded) hit a weak ground ball to first on this day some thirty-four years ago.
  24. So you're saying now that trading Ruth was like losing $100 at the track? (I believe we could go on like this forever, each of us denouncing others' analogies as preposterous!)
  25. https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-red-sox/2020/10/23/daniel-bard-comeback-player-of-the-year Good for him. I never lose interest in those who once played for teams I follow, and these days, for better or worse, there are more and more of them.
