  1. Which was the year they were essentially a .500 team, then came out of the All-Star break and remarkably won 20 straight?
  2. It appears from my brief and unofficial surveys, that your basic MLB fanbase has more stupid, chest-thumping, racist a-holes than your basic NBA team fanbase. But my methodology may not be sound.
  3. Guys. Stop. My "ignore" file is filling up.
  4. *Guardians are no more. It must have been embarrassing to find yourself less woke than Dan Snyder. But good for them, even though it's overdue.
  5. Really? I never do! When I try that, all I get is the unnerving and depressing feeling that I'm just kidding myself. Then, when things turn out like s*** (e.g., you have a year-long pandemic that half your fellow citizens claim doesn't exist), I just kick myself for not being better prepared.
  6. We need to delegate someone to do some research into stories about this. Relying on the vagaries of our memories isn't going to do it. (All I found was a reminder that it was Cabrera who called Manny out and prevented him from taking a day off during the playoffs.)
  7. Ha! No, alas. But I'd be open to adoption! (Domestic violence--yeah, I think I dimly recall that. Don't recall hearing he was also a philanderer.)
  8. I don't disagree with that. But there's less of that here (in CA) than in NE, and the cases are still sky-rocketing. What I see here is a lot of what I call 'recreational shopping'--e.g., at TJ's, where only once in the last month have I not seen a line outside. And a lot of businesses fudging on the rules (what happened here, was that 'outside dining' was interpreted by many restaurants as permitting the construction of enclosed tents and awnings outside (that essentially provided all the dangers of indoor dining without an air-circulation system). We'll see what happens w/ the current stay-at-home order. I'm lucky--my life is essentially the same --I just don't get to see my friends as often as I would like.
  9. This is both good and bad news. My concern is what I see around me here (LA) and elsewhere. It is as if the news on the vaccine has made many people seemingly indifferent to basic and obvious safety. If the cases continue to rise until April or May (is that what you're assume?), we (or 100s of thousands of us) are in serious trouble. Stay safe. Wear a mask. (The fact that this closing banality will be considered by some "controversial" or "political" is in part why we're screwed.)
  10. Ah, that's all it was. Now I like him even more!
  11. I have some vague recollection of that. But I always liked Cabrera. He also stood up for a lot of Hispanic players (including, if I remember right, Manny), by pointing out that a lot of the things they were blamed for saying (or their mere reticence) was due to reporters not taking into account that for many of them, English was not their first language.
  12. That he can be part of a team that plays 100 games or more. (Actually, I'm going to put that in the "hope" rather than the "realistic expectations" category).
  13. Now wait. The proliferation of sports psychologists no more proves the existence of the things they purport to cure than the proliferation of conspiracy theorists proves that they're on to something.
  14. OK. I think I got it. E, if he's prepared to go full on dive for the ball and has any chance at all, has to yell "I got it!" If the IF is just drifting out there and knows absolutely he can get it, he will have time to call E off? (I do recall from what little playing I did that camping under a ball for an easy catch, then getting called off by someone trying to make a spectacular diving play was more than mildly irritating.--of course, maybe the adolescent angst of that doesn't apply--or shouldn't apply--to play at this level.)
  15. OK. But what is an OF (or any fielder) supposed to do when they are running full bore but aren't sure they can make the play? Ellsbury can't really call off the 3B, can he, unless he's sure he can make the catch? There's no real way to do this, is there? (You can't call out "I'm laying out for this, but hey if you think you have a better chance let me know, Jesus Christ here it comes ..."). (Not arguing here--I just don't know how this is handled. Coaches? Players? Anyone?)
  16. Jensen, wow. When I came to sports consciousness he was in RF, and one of my favorites. I just assumed at that age that he had been with the RS since the Big Bang (which I'm not sure had been discovered yet).
  17. OK. I'm lost. How does taking on the salary a "costly" player result in a "salary dump aspect" that benefits the team taking on that contract? Like, I'm going to buy your used, overpriced Mercedes for $100K and use the money I save to get a Prius?
  18. I don't know. I'm in LA right now and I can't go outside without getting run over by a championship parade. (Well, maybe the chances of one in football aren't as good as they might be, although maybe USC and UCLA can get there before BC and UMass.)
  19. We'll revisit this at our world series parade.
  20. "Great" return?? Depends how RS spend the money they saved. Or maybe finding a starting pitcher as good as Price at half his salary. Who would that be?
  21. After last night, I think the best off-season move would be to hire Snoop Dog to pair up with Joe C.
  22. As Nadal said when asked if Kyrgios could be a top-10 player if he [X, Y, Z], "Eef eef eef."
  23. Yup. (Question: Is there ANYTHING any of us have read on a sports board that made us change our minds about ANYTHING?)
