Well, that's speculative, since we have no idea what the future will hold (unlike the 0-3 start this year, or the dismal record last year, which are facts). But sure: I followed the RS through the 50s and later without losing enthusiasm, despite some horrendous years. I kept following them because I was familiar with the players (and I'm not arguing here for the old authoritarian system; even following free-agency, there was always continuity from year to year). I would feel the same way if I were told, say, by my boss that they have fired a number of co-workers because they can get the same work done cheaper by out-sourcing it.

And that Mookie guy? But yes, I admit, as a RS fan, I'd rather watch Beni and JBJ struggle than watch players I've never heard of outhit them by 30 points or so.

Except that 'drastic turnover' (i.e., getting rid of the majority of players ordinary fans like to see play), is exactly what got the RS into this situation.

Right. And even more important, the average long-term fan (like me) wants to follow players they know and have followed. That's a helluva lot more important than whether they win a championship w/ a bunch of no-name mercenaries (how is the Marlins fan base doing?) This is the entertainment business, not an investment company. I don't give a crap what their balance sheet looks like. I just want to see players I'm familiar with. If they win, great. If not, so what? (and for those of you who claim I am thus not a 'true fan', fine. But I've been watching them since the 50s). -
Ok. Then you don't get what you pay for! I just find it hard to get involved with a team that (1) sucks, and (2) in order to suck, has gotten rid of all the players I've followed over the past few years.

There is no sense to be had with this team. But the important question is, will the Seadogs have enough of a season so that I can pay off that debt I owe you? (Probably the only thing about this baseball season I'm looking forward to.)

Just remember, as we were told in another thread "intelligent" RS fans support all the moves Bloom/Henry made. So now we just need to have them explain to us how we are supposed to appreciate the nuances of this team. (I think I am simply insufficiently conversant with dWAR and fanGraphs to really understand what we have here.)

Ha ha! I understand now. If all the players Bloom signs end up to be Hall of Famers, then he did a great job. ERGO, "intelligent" fans support him. (Of course, they will have no reason to buy tickets or purchase gear, but that's up to the marketing department, right?). At least the pitching is great, no?

Damn, this Bloomian team is hard to watch; but so were all the off-season moves these past two years. Oh well. You get what you pay for, I guess.

The fact that the RS are mediocre doesn't bother me--I've cheered for lots of mediocre RS teams over the past half century or so. Rooting for players you know is what fandom is, no? What bothers me about this situation (and this is everywhere in pro sports today), is that it took so much wheeling and dealing to GET to this level of mediocrity.
