  1. ?? Why? Because the three players I most liked watching play were let go? Are you telling me I shouldn't be annoyed at that? If fans don't care about human players, what are they supposed to care about? Team OPS?
  2. OMG, are you asking me to review all those posts only to find out I may have mis-read them??? What a world! What a world!
  3. Well, SG is talking about that, but it's possible most of us have him on "Ignore."
  4. His apparent defensive issues are the reasons for the argument to get rid of him, no? (That's what was being discussed here.) Its odd--when I saw him play a couple of times in AA, knowing nothing of him, his defense was fine; he seemed in a different league from the others (anyone who watches minor league bb knows what I mean here), and I just assumed his skills were defensive, and that his hitting was so-so. I would think that improving defense is something more easily learned than improving hitting.
  5. And if there are fans who follow the RS specifically because they enjoy watching Mookie, JBJ, Beni, Devers or anyone else? Screw them. This is the Tampa Way.
  6. Yeah, definitely give up on Devers because as all the moves this offense have shown, defense is key. Well, that and pitching, of course. And ... well, not spending anything.
  7. I know Lynn likes JBJ, likes Mookie too. But what does an old fart like that know about dWAR, fangraphs, and the importance of getting under the salary cap?
  8. Exactly. The league could easily put a stop to it if they stopped wringing their hands in a melodramatic moralistic fit.
  9. Yes. I don't choose players I like by their dWAR anymore than I choose friends on the basis of how much money they have. Is it shameful to like players who aren't the best in the league? Then why aren't you following the Dodgers?
  10. https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-red-sox/2021/03/05/red-sox-patriots-jackie-bradley-jr-belichick-versatility?fbclid=IwAR2GaVXGE2Qd6KmbQ9Ue_R8IBtOeyp2AIokOYY5mRA8V6Bi5TlKO4xPe1bc Nice. What the article only implies, but doesn't say directly, is 'becoming Bill Belichick' might not be a great thing if you don't happen to have Tom Brady.
  11. I don't have MLB.tv, and I stream all the sports I want. (Or WAIT! NO I DON'T I SWEAR! But I have heard of people who do.) But I did see one of the players I rather like (Lin) get a hit in the two innings they played today. Of course, he was playing for the other team, like many of the other RS players I've followed over the past few years.
  12. Watching an interview with JD during a rain delay (I assumed filmed a couple of days ago). Holy crap! Has this guy put on 30 pounds? He's not in Pablo territory, but there's no way that paunch is going to help. He also took some of the worst JD swings I've seen--that low outside pitch in the dirt that for some reason, he can't resist waving at--a swing that has gotten far too familiar over the last year.
  13. Can't you stream them? (I haven't tried yet bec. there's only one or two players on the team I even recognize.)
  14. Not trying to duck that. I just have never felt going into a new season that the majority of my favorite players are gone. Probably one reason for that is that in pre-sports board days, I never bothered to think about the team during the off-season, and by spring, I would say "Oh look. A new player." I never sensed that four or five guys were suddenly gone. Nor did I hear open talk about dumping players and salaries or shipping guys out when their contracts came up. (I admit that many players I liked were dumped (obviously one's 'favorite' players are not to be confused with 'most skilled' players): Nomar, then Cabrera, B. Holt, Lester, Manny; I liked Hanley too.) But I never looked out and said 'Holy crap-- a brand new outfield!'
  15. That is exactly correct. And they will follow players they know and like (as everyone on this board has), even when the team does not win championships. They don't give a crap whether the ownership group makes billions or loses their shirt. Nor whether the team is run like a "good business."
  16. A tough call?? Why? He was the best player in baseball. And the team they gave him away to (paying half of PRice's salary as a bonus!) just won a Championship while the RS front office was celebrating publicly getting under the salary cap. Manny is hardly comparable as the RS got and paid for the best years of his career.
  17. None of those championship teams began by ridding the roster of almost all the starters. Each one was recognizable as a variant of the team of the previous years. That is not true of this one. As for fun, I don't remember that following the RS in the last decade or so was any more fun than following them in the 60s or 70s or 80s or whatever. Winning championships is nice. But it's not why I follow sports, nor why I follow particular teams. (I'm not saying anything about what others do or should do.)
  18. Not to me. I don't like or dislike players depending on their salaries.
  19. Well yes. I'd like to keep Devers and Xander. BECAUSE I KNOW THEM. That's the same reason I want to see JBJ, Betts and Beni. Of course you can replace guys statistically. But you can't expect fans to show the same sort of loyalty they've shown to players they know to a 'bunch of guys' they've never heard of. This is not a question of 'what makes the best team at the lowest cost'; it's a question of 'what do the fans care about'? If I only recognize one or two guys on the team, I don't give a crap if they lose 162 games. I'll just follow teams with players I'm familiar with.
  20. If Henry had given a GM the charge "Here's your money: I want you to destroy whatever it is that has made fans look forward to a new season and has listened faithfully to a majority of games for the last ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more years." Had he done that, Bloom could not possibly have done a better job. So I have a question for Bloom apologists (who probably are better represented on sports boards, of course, than in the general population). Find me one fan (not in Bloom's immediate family) who says "Damn, I HATED those years when they had Betts, Beni, and JBJ. Never watched them. Never listened. Never went to a game. But NOW that we've gotten rid of all those guys, I can't wait for the season to start, and I just put in my order for season tickets."
  21. JBJ finally traded. Now, if we can just get rid of Boggaerts and Devers, maybe dump Sale and Eovaldi, we'll have close to the team Bloom dreamed of having in Tamps. We also won't be troubled by having any fans in the ballpark.
  22. Right. And Agon? One of the most consistent modern players--put up almost the same numbers with the RS as everywhere else. (But ... well ... he didn't ... as they say ... 'fit in' ... I mean ... you know ... I'm not racist ... no one is in Boston ... but ... jes' sayin' ...)
  23. I thought you said these games were meaningless. ????
  24. But not being able to get through an inning of a ST game against what is often a pick-up line-up? That doesn't strike me as meaningless. Maybe they should adopt the "over the fence is out" rule as well.
  25. But hey, this year, the RS can use the 'mercy rule,' as today. That should make up for other small things--like the fact that they got rid of their best players.
