  1. I don't think he was asking that anyone feel sorry for them. He was asking whether a boss (in any profession) should be able to treat you like property.
  2. There was a problem a couple of hundred years ago in this country with the notion that workers were owned, and could be sold. Not sure why that system is reconstituted on the upper levels. But not many workers for, say, GE wake up in the morning to discover that they've been reassigned to Xerox and need to show up for work on Monday. Maybe the next CBA will address this?
  3. Yup. (Although I will concede that it teaches a valuable life lesson: that there are many folks out there of no great skill or intelligence, who get off on exercising arbitrary power over others.)
  4. I think it does not. And blessedly, many institutions (e.g., the military, and most universities combatting frat-boy mentality) are beginning to agree with me.
  5. Hazing is illegal now in the military, at most universities, and in most pro-sports. It is now recognized as the stupid, juvenile, and hypocritical activity it always has been. It is particularly prevalent among sexually-repressed homophobes who find themselves in the company of fellow gay-bashers and pedophiles (e.g., late 20th c American prep-schools and fraternities). Time for it to go.
  6. Betts is a good fit for any team. If he's not, they need to change the composition of the team.
  7. Actually, players who are offered 300 million are EXACTLY the players you want on your team.
  8. I believe he simply goes through all the box scores of every game ever played. Pretty basic research method, no?
  9. Maybe we talked of this before. I've heard OF those rumors, but don't know any details. I liked Cabrera a lot; he always gave really good and smart interviews. I remember he was friends with Manny and was adamant that the friction between him and (was it writers?) was because Manny was not entirely comfortable in his second language.
  10. Just heard his comment about celebrations following HRs (he's all for it) and calling out pitchers who get butt-hurt and through at batters in retaliation. Never liked him much. Now I'm a fan.
  11. Is the pitcher the cut-off man on that? Shouldn't he be backing up the plate? (Ah, announcers just answered that. He was basically pissed so just stood around getting in the way of the play.)
  12. Ah, thanks. I had thought they always had that, both offense and defense (although if you only allow man-to-man defense, there would be no reason for it, I suppose, as there would be no way you could then get to the paint without being on anyone.).
  13. Not a big basketball fan ,but i think they've always had the three second rule, no?
  14. No it isn't. It was ten years ago, but not now.
  15. Did you see Verducci's article in SI whining that the shift should be outlawed because it so hurt Jay Bruce's career (a .244 career hitter). I love the logic: he's slow, and can't hit to all fields, doesn't have too much power, so IT'S NOT FAIR!!!! I suppose by the same logic: there are a lot of AA players who cannot hit curve balls. THEREFORE, the curve ball needs to be banned. Or was the whole damn article written tongue-in-cheek? (If so, just call me the usual names and move on.)
  16. Nice start. One strike in three batters. Lucky it didn't go out.
  17. I'm sure if I had been told that by the end of April, the RS would be sharing its divisional position in the standings with the Mets, KC, the Reds and the Mariners, I would have sighed deeply, and drawing on decades of disappointment (ignoring the last 15 years or so), have shaken my head sadly and said: "Figures."
  18. Dude. I have never attacked you. I have made jokes about our relative ages. This is a sports board; I make jokes about everything, since nothing here means s***. If you want to be taken seriously, stop assuming that you are somehow the victim of some dastardly display of wit that only you seem to understand.
  19. Ha ha! As in the introduction to an ancient game show (was it What's My Line?), please before offering life lessons, state your age and the number of decades you have been a RS fan!
  20. I love it when position players pitch. What are you supposed to do in a 15-1 blowout? Pretend to 'jes' keep grinding'? The way, you pretend that flipping the bat after a HR is an insult of some sort?
  21. They could fix that EASILY, if they just changed the rule (to accord w/ the way the play has been called for 150 years). If the runner makes contact w/ the base and is OVER the base completing the slide, he is considered safe. That's how umpires see it; that's how players make that play; and that's how it should continue to be called. Replay was invented to correct errors, not to manufacture them by micromanaging plays like this.
  22. Another good one. When the hurricanes come, I watch it religiously. (although given the uncertainty, I just choose the least catastrophic path in order to feel better about what is about to happen!)
  23. Yeah, I get that, although I think hurricane path prediction is better than you suggest. Have you ever tried out the website "Windy"? "Windy" gives a fantastic view of what's going on (you're right, precipitation is a lot trickier to predict. I'm a sailor, so all I really care about is wind. If it rains, big whoop.)
  24. Gosh. That was as bad an AB as Devers has ever had, taking the one pitch he should have hammered.
