  1. I know. I have criminal relations myself, as do most of the posters here. That has nothing to do with what RS fans are grieving about.
  2. Wow. Someone died. And you are pissed because his eulogists say good things about him? Jesus Christ, Dude, he was a PUBLIC FIGURE, an ENTERTAINER. You are aware that the roles entertainers play are not their 'true selves', correct? Let people mourn. The public figure is what I and everyone here will miss. Unlike some, we're not particularly interested in his private life, his politics, his sex life, his favorite color, or how many hours he works in a soup kitchen.
  3. Most nostalgia involves utopias that didn't exist anyway. (Like that of the South for ante-bellum 'culture'; or ourselves for the 'glories' of our often-pathetic youth!)
  4. Wouldn't trading Bogey essentially announce to all current RS players not to consider signing a 'team-friendly' contract, or concede the so-called 'home-town discount"?
  5. Sad. He had a job, took it very seriously, and did it very well. He also gave up and put up with a lot in life in order to do that, and to make our lives a bit better as a result. RIP
  6. Exactly: to improve a team, one must ADD productive players; it is not enough simply to get RID of productive players, despite what some seem to think.
  7. Then I would say: "This is a guy who thinks the reason to go to games is to yell FAKE death threats at umpires." Which of course is hardly better.
  8. Just checked JBJ's 2021 line. YIKES! What happened? .160? the streaky hitter we recall seems to be gone, and now he's consistently a .150 hitter. Surely this is fixable, no? Or is Milwaukee thinking 'what's the point?'
  9. Just remember, this is a guy who thinks a reason to go to a game is to yell death threats at the umpires. I don't think we need to take his advice on the ethics and proprieties of posting seriously.
  10. I hear you. I grew up watching Jim Brown (when I could, which wasn't often). And thus, yes, I love watching the run game. I didn't watch a lot of basketball, which is probably why I find the athleticism of the modern game (not the 3-pt shot!) awesome! No desire to go back to the days of Jim Luskatov.
  11. Yeah, we get that. To you, yelling death threats is 'part of the fun'. Not to us.
  12. I don't think you would disagree with this, but your associating automated ball/strike calls with the introduction of the 3-pt line in basketball shows that your objection to 'robot umps' has nothing whatsoever to do with technology or 'the human element' in sports. It's all about keeping the game 'the way it was' when we were kids. But alas (or perhaps Thank God!) NOTHING is the way it was when we were kids. Nor is 'the way it was when we were kids' much like 'the way it was when when our parents or grandparents were kids'.
  13. Hating both teams, I had more or less determined that I hated the Astros more. Then the ATL fans showed up with the tomahawk chop. Proving, I suppose, that Dan Snyder isn't the most socially tone-deaf a-hole in sports.
  14. Why then have foul lines? We never had them as kids. (More mechanical manipulation replacing the human element of just looking and seeing whether a ball is fair). Why even have a strike zone? (They didn't have one in the early days of baseball, and the game hasn't been the same since).
  15. I have never seen an employer "just go by the actual data." Never.
  16. Yeah, whenever I hear employers say "Just let's get rid of the bad ones," it always means "Let's just get rid of those employees I don't like."
  17. What a wuss that Charlie Morton is. Why back in my day, we played with bones sticking out of our skin ALL THE TIME. And this guy bails on his team after two innings?? Where's the tough??? And how am I going to teach my kids to be bad-ass watching mamby-pamby modern athletes?
  18. Yup. You can't claim an umpiring decision was "bad" on a check-swing until you define what it is. (Most commentators go full "tuck rule" on such matters--deriding the umpires for bad calls, checking the rule book or video and finding it was the RIGHT call, then responding by deriding the umpires even more vigorously.)
  19. OMG!!! CARS? Personal transportation machines? You're kidding! How do you feed them? Who's going to build roads? Stick with trains, for God's sake, or take an Uber.
  20. You're certainly right about the way a pitcher plays an empire. But selective review? God no! That would be combining the worst aspects of replay (which I despise, by the way) with the worst of robo-umps. If you have a machine that can call balls and strikes instantly, then use it.
  21. That is not correct.
  22. And for God's sake (my pet peeve!) STOP TELEVISING GAMES! Think what that does to attendance. Shees! Ever noticed that that 86-year-WS-drought happened during the rise of radio and tv broadcasts? As did the precipitous increase in ticket prices??? Coincidence???!!!! Come on, people!
  23. Also, I believe MLB bans the use of any tobacco. (You don't see guys with cans of Copenhagen in their backpockets anymore -- not sure why that was supposed to look cool, maybe some Freudian thing about carrying giant condoms at all times, you know, just in case ...)
  24. My understanding is that he chews a mixture of gum and sunflower seeds. Having used tobacco like that, I can say there is no way he could have that wad in his cheek without spitting grotesquely and continually.
  25. One of my favorite inanities is when an announcer looks at a call (a ball/strike) in replay and praises the umpire "Great Call!!!!" as a euphemism for 'apparently the correct call'. Just think, with a computerized strike zone, we could get "Great Call!!!" s all the time.
